Important Notes:

As a civil engineering student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment on existing civil engineering theories – i.e., to add value and interest in your research topic.

The field of civil engineering is vast and interrelated to so many other academic disciplines like  construction ,  law , engineering management , healthcare , mental health , artificial intelligence , tourism , physiotherapy , sociology , management , marketing and nursing . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is particular, sound and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong: your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation as you may end up in a cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best civil engineering dissertation topics that fulfils your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please take a look at some of our sample civil engineering dissertation topics to get an idea for your dissertation.

How to Structure Your Dissertation on Civil Engineering

A well-structured   dissertation can help students   to achieve a high overall academic grade.

  • A Title Page
  • Acknowledgements
  • Declaration
  • Abstract: A summary of the research completed
  • Table of Contents
  • Introduction : This chapter includes the project rationale, research background, key research aims and objectives, and the research problems to be addressed. An outline of the structure of a dissertation  can also be added to this chapter.
  • Literature Review :  This chapter presents relevant theories and frameworks by analysing published and unpublished literature available on the chosen research topic, in light of  research questions  to be addressed. The purpose is to highlight and discuss the relative weaknesses and strengths of the selected research area whilst identifying any research gaps. Break down of the topic, and key terms can have a positive impact on your dissertation and your tutor.
  • Methodology:  The  data collection  and  analysis methods and techniques employed by the researcher are presented in the Methodology chapter, which usually includes  research design, research philosophy, research limitations, code of conduct, ethical consideration, data collection methods, and  data analysis strategy .
  • Findings and Analysis: The findings of the research are analysed in detail in the Findings and Analysis chapter. All key findings/results are outlined in this chapter without interpreting the data or drawing any conclusions. It can be useful to include  graphs , charts, and   tables in this chapter to identify meaningful trends and relationships.
  • Discussion  and  Conclusion: The researcher presents his interpretation of results in this chapter and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section of the paper is to draw a linkage between the results and evidence from the literature. Recommendations with regard to the implications of the findings and directions for the future may also be provided. Finally, a summary of the overall research, along with final judgments, opinions, and comments, must be included in the form of suggestions for improvement.
  • References: This should be completed in accordance with your University’s requirements
  • Bibliography
  • Appendices:  Any additional information, diagrams, graphs that were used to  complete the  dissertation  but not part of the dissertation should be included in the Appendices chapter. Essentially, the purpose is to expand the information/data.

MERE4952 & MERE9453 Research Thesis B & C

These two units (4UoC each) can be taken in the same term or separately. Thesis B involves submitting a video/audio reflection of the work so far and an interim report. Thesis C involves writing your thesis and recording and submitting a scientific presentation of your results./engineering/our-schools/minerals-and-energy-resources-engineering/our-researchengineering/our-schools/minerals-and-energy-resources-engineering/our-research

All undergrad thesis sudents can find a list of thesis topics will posted on the  Thesis A Moodle site . The student key to access the site will be sent out by the thesis co-ordinator to all students who will be taking thesis the following term. You should review the list and discuss the topics with the relevant supervisor to get an idea of what it entails.

Once both the supervisor and student have agreed on the topic, a Thesis Nomination Form should be completed. This is submitted to the Thesis Coordinator and uploaded to the SOLA 4951 Moodle site prior to the student commencing work on their topic. All students must have chosen a supervisor by 9am Monday week 1 of term.

You can develop your own thesis topic, if you can find a supervisor from within the School. This will require you to attach a one page description of the thesis topic and signed by the supervisor to the Thesis Nomination Form.

The School also encourages students who wish to do an industry-led thesis topic. In this case the mentor from industry would be the student’s co-supervisor, however an academic staff member from the School must act as the supervisor of the thesis.

For an industry-led thesis, you must obtain approval from an academic of the School to supervise the topic. You should submit a signed letter from the industry representative and academic supervisor with a brief outline of the project with a Thesis Nomination Form.

All information needed for the deliverables of thesis A can be found in the course outline which is available on the SOLA4951 Moodle site.

Undergraduate Thesis FAQs

The Engineering thesis will be taken for the duration of three terms - as Thesis A, Thesis B and Thesis C.

Each course will carry 4 Units of Credit (UoC) for a total of 12 UoC. The total UoC requirement remains unchanged from current.

Students will have two options to take Thesis from 2019:

  • Option 1 - Standard: (4 UoC per term starting T1, T2 or T3) : Students enrol in Thesis A, Thesis B and thesis C and complete the Thesis across three consecutive terms. Total of 12 UoC.  Note than once Thesis A is taken, Thesis B and Thesis C must be taken consecutively in the two terms that follow.
  • Option 2: (4+8: 4 UoC in one term and 8 UoC in the following term) : Students who demonstrate satisfactory progress in Thesis A may apply to their School to take a 4+8 UoC structure where both Thesis B and C are taken in the next single term of that year. Total of 12 UoC.  This option is subject to having demonstrated satisfactory progress in Thesis A.

Students who do not maintain satisfactory performance in Option 2 will revert to Option 1 and take Thesis across three terms.

Thesis A, Thesis B and Thesis C will run in every term (T1, T2 and T3).

Yes, it’s possible to start your thesis in any term, however once Thesis A is taken, Thesis B and Thesis C must be completed in each term consecutively afterward.

Depending on the thesis course you take, your topic may be provided to you or you will need to develop one.

If you need to develop one, most schools have a website that lists available topics and the staff willing to supervise those topics. You may wish to select a topic based on areas of engineering interest, extracurricular interests (such as the  ChallENG Projects ), or preference for working with a particular academic in your field.  You can even come up with your own in consultation with your thesis supervisor. Take a look!

The process is different for each school, so review the information above.

If you still have questions, contact your school’s  postgraduate thesis coordinator .

Doing thesis in industry is a great opportunity and worth pursuing. Some students are able to arrange a thesis project that follows on from an industrial training placement.

Students wanting to take an industry-based project still need to take the Research Thesis courses for their specialisation. You need to arrange a UNSW academic as a co-supervisor and apply for permission to take thesis offsite.

Please check with your school’s  Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator  for further details.

Yes, there are a number of Humanitarian Engineering Thesis Supervisors within UNSW Engineering who can potentially supervise a thesis.

Students who demonstrate satisfactory progress in Thesis A may apply to their School to take a 4+8 UoC structure where both Thesis B and C are taken in the next single term of that year.

The 4+8 UoC option is intended for high performing students to finish their thesis project in two terms. Students enrolled in this structure will take Thesis A in the first term and then, provided that satisfactory progress has been reached, will take Thesis B and C in the term following Thesis A.

Yes. In addition to the Thesis, you can enrol in up to two additional courses per term. You should enrol in these courses when annual enrolment opens. Overloading is possible but will require program authority approval.

If progress is deemed as unsatisfactory at the end of Thesis A, the student will move to the default Thesis option: Thesis A, B and C (4 UoC).

Yes, you’ll still be able to enrol in up to two additional courses. Given the increased workload of having to do Thesis B and C together, two courses per term would be the maximum recommended by the Faculty.

An enrolment continued (EC) grade will appear against your Thesis A/Thesis B subjects until you’ve completed your thesis. At this time your final grade will appear against your Thesis C. Around a week after you have received your final mark, a roll back process will be run so that the EC grades previously against Thesis A and Thesis B will be updated to reflect your overall Thesis mark.

Information on honours calculations are available on the  Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program  rules page.

It’s possible to take leave and then continue your thesis on your return. Talk to your supervisor about your situation and the dates involved so that you can work out a suitable plan together.

Most schools have a Moodle, intranet, or web page with detailed information about their thesis program. That should be your next port of call – check your school’s section above for access instructions.

Schools often run information sessions during the year. These will be advertised via email, on social media and/or during class. Keep an eye out for these events.

If you have questions related to enrolment or progression, contact the  Nucleus .

Finally, each school has an  Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator  who can answer specific questions related to your personal circumstances.

Ph.D. student develops AI technology to better support NE research

Dina Osama Elsayed Elgewaily in front of a large nuclear engineering display.

Dina Osama Elsayed Elgewaily has plenty of advice for incoming Ph.D. students getting a degree in nuclear engineering.

First, stick with a nine-to-five work schedule. Second, respect the weekends. Elgewaily said she spent far too many nights early in her degree working until morning, and far too often she found herself working for long hours on a Saturday afternoon.

“Even while I was writing my thesis and preparing for my defense, it had already been ingrained in me that we’re not working after 5 p.m. and we’re not working on weekends, except for maybe half a day on a Saturday or something,” she said. “The weekend is the time to recharge.”

Dina Osama Elsayed Elgewaily, standing behind lecturn and next to a large LED screen, makes a presentation to a group of people in the foreground.

For Elgewaily, completing her thesis wasn’t the only academic achievement to come out of her Ph.D. In 2022, she co-authored a paper titled “Raman and XPS Analyses of Steam-Oxidized Silicon Carbide” with Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Director of the Nuclear Engineering Undergraduate Program Jacob Eapen.

Throughout the years, she presented her findings in multiple conferences, and is currently co-authoring several journal articles about her Ph.D. research.

She has also worked as a graduate research assistant since she started at NC State in January of 2019 and done several projects over the last five and a half years, including working on silicon carbide characterization post steam attack with Oak Ridge National Lab and another project on the mechanisms of transport and retention of different fission products into nuclear graphite with the University of Central Florida.

Even with the use of AI or machine learning, the human part in the interpretation of the results and the validation of them will never go away.

“The final project, which comprises over 70 or 80 percent of my thesis, was the porosity characterization of different grades of nuclear graphite,” she said. “Most of my work was on the characterization of virgin samples, in which I developed a new methodology to threshold the pore space of graphite.

“Porosity characterization in graphite has been ongoing for decades, but there was an inherent challenge in the accuracy of segmentation because of the low contrast between graphite and its pores when imaged by X-ray tomography,” she added.

Dina Osama Elsayed Elgewaily, right, enjoy a sunny Spring day outside with her dog.

This is what turned Elgewaily onto machine learning and artificial intelligence as a way to aid in nuclear engineering research. Machine learning has been used in phase identification and segmentation purposes in the medical field, and with computerized tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. It was not specific to nuclear-engineering based medical applications.

Elgewaily successfully developed this methodology and validated its accuracy against well-documented studies of extensively researched grades, as well as its precision by applying it to three distinct samples from a grade known for its uniformity.

Having been at NC State since 2019, Elgewaily’s time in her program has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility in which she was doing characterization was closed for a year. She spent much of this time analyzing her previous findings and delving deeper into literature on the subject.

Dina Osama Elsayed Elgewaily looks at camera while sitting in front of two computer monitors and spread out papers.

She spent the first two and a half years of her Ph.D. taking classes, so the majority of her research results came about in the latter half of her program. It was during this time that she participated in extracurricular activities, like table tennis and chess, and she adopted her border collie and Australian Shepherd mix, Kiwi.

“I would say that my research only started actively producing results that we ended up using after I was done with my classes,” she said. “Before then, I was getting familiar with the testing techniques, familiar with how to research and how to do my literature reviews. So  I was still a beginning Ph.D. student, garnering the skills needed to actually do research.”

She defended her research dissertation, “Porosity Analysis using Machine Learning and Ruthenium Diffusion in Nuclear Graphite Grades,” this past March, to co-advisors Eapen and Korukonda Murty, Progress Energy Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering.

As for what’s next, Elgewaily recently moved to Italy and is job hunting for the next step in her career. She is also working on publishing a few journal articles that delves into AI, as per her Ph.D. research.

“Because our jobs are in the nuclear engineering field, the ultimate goal is to inform the designs, and the actual building of the components,” she said. “In nuclear applications, things are pretty high stakes. Even with the use of AI or machine learning, the human part in the interpretation of the results and the validation of them will never go away.”

Ralm Ricarte , a biomedical engineering faculty member, was recently recognized for his work as a mentor to undergraduate students in the FSU Honors in the Major program.

A record three faculty mentors who helped students with Honors thesis projects were recognized at the annual Florida State University Faculty Awards Celebration in April at the Augustus B. Turnbull III Florida State Conference Center.

The winners of the Honors Thesis Mentor Awards, which is earned for working with students on original research to complete an Honors in the Major thesis, Ricarte, assistant professor in the joint college’s Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering and FSU; Douglas Storace, assistant professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science; and Crystal Taylor, director of research in the DeVoe L. Moore Center in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at FSU.

Ricarte’s mentee recognized his high expectations and encouragement.

“Dr. Ricarte’s care and genuine interest in my work have made me more excited to get in the lab,” wrote his nominator, Marie Chmara, who worked with Ricarte to create and analyze hydrogels and study their toxicity to the human body. “It makes me feel like my work matters.”

The Honors in the Major Program allows upper-division students to produce advanced research under the guidance of top-tier faculty. Students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA and at least 60 credit hours with two full semesters before graduation.

“My goal as a mentor is to help students traverse the seemingly safe yet sometimes treacherous gap which they encounter transitioning from student to professional,” said Taylor, who helped political science student Camila Aponte conduct award-winning educational policy research for Honors in the Major after previously mentoring her for a project through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. “I am very honored that Camila advocated so passionately for me to continue in my mentorship role on her scholarly journey.”

About 175 students participate every year in the program, which allows them to graduate “with Honors,” the only opportunity to do so outside of enrollment in the University Honors Program. The program is expanding and has approved a record-breaking 164 applications to begin this summer and fall.”

Mentoring undergraduate research is a labor of love,” said Michael David Franklin, assistant director of Honors in the Major. “Faculty mentors share with students the joy of asking questions about the world and then show students the ropes of how to answer those questions in ways relevant to their fields.”

This is the first year three faculty mentors won the award, a testament to an especially large number of nominations from mentees, who represented 21 different departments or programs across the university.

In their nomination letters, students wrote about how their faculty mentors met with them for regular one-on-one meetings and helped them analyze data, understand statistics, identify helpful resources, conduct literature reviews, refine their writing skills, apply for conferences and present their research.

“Dr. Storace embodies the essence of exceptional mentorship,” wrote Storace’s nominator, Catherine Rodriguez, after working with him to study how fasting changed a part of the brain involved in olfaction in mice. “His guidance has been transformative, empowering me to reach new heights of academic achievement and personal growth.”

Their Research Was Interrupted, But Their Potential Was Not

The 2024 ph.d. hooding and awards ceremony honors 166 new graduates and gourav datta, winner of this year’s best ph.d. thesis..

Ryan Bena was only in his second semester as a Ph.D. student at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering when he was forced to leave the Dynamic Robotics and Control Laboratory .

COVID-19, it seemed, cared little for continuity in doctoral research.

Bena, who had just starting achieving “groundbreaking experimental results” with the lab’s insect-size, flying robot, Bee++, suddenly had to abandon all his experiments. What’s worse, his close lab collaborator, Xiufeng Yang, graduated soon after in May 2020.

Like most of the 166 Ph.D. candidates in this year’s graduating class, Bena spent the next six months working remotely. But he used that time profitably – analyzing his experimental results and dedicating himself to writing and submitting papers, which were soon favorably received in the micro-scale robotics community.

Today, Bena was among the four finalists for USC Viterbi’s most coveted Ph.D. award: the William F. Ballhaus, Jr. Prize for Excellence in Graduate Engineering Research.

On Wednesday, May 8, at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s 2024 Ph.D. Hooding and Awards Ceremony, Bovard Auditorium was alive with bright colors, Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” and family and well-wishers from all over the globe.

The 2024 event saw the newly minted Ph.D.s sport their new cardinal and gold hoods, a tradition that dates back to 12th century monks. This year’s graduates represent countries ranging from China, India, Lebanon, South Korea, Italy and the U.S. — united, according to Yannis Yortsos, USC Viterbi dean, in their “shared talents and diverse areas of expertise.”

Gourav Datta, ’23, ultimately took home the USC Viterbi Ph.D. dissertation award for 2024 for his work: “Towards Efficient Edge Intelligence with Neuromorphic and In-Sensor Computing: Algorithm-Hardware Co-Design.” Alongside his advisor, Professor Peter Beerel, Datta collaborated with Samsung on energy efficient “self-healing cameras” that can fill in the gaps of distorted images.

The ceremony coincided with this year’s 20th anniversary of the USC Viterbi School naming , and Dean Yannis Yortsos was quick to remind the attendees of another doctoral student — Andrew Viterbi, Ph.D. ’62 — who was also no stranger to overcoming adversity.

Viterbi, one of the school’s early Ph.D. students, had a dream of becoming a university professor. But that dream was tempered by a necessity to work full time, providing for his wife, two young kids and two sets of elderly parents. USC, he soon discovered, was the place where he could do both.

Hussein Hammoud receives his hood from Professor Tony Levi, chair of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“Now, his Ph.D. defense was not an easy one,” said Yortsos. “It was the only time in his life he dreaded getting out of bed. When it was all done, he was certain that he’d failed…Indeed, Andrew Viterbi, according to his own autobiography, felt that his dissertation was far from his best work. It would be another four years before he felt he made a meaningful contribution to his field. But what he did, we’re still celebrating 50 years later!”

Yortsos added: “As Socrates said: “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel. My hope for all of you is that your time at USC helped the kindling of a flame that will burn brightly in all your life. That flame will hopefully give warmth to other places, cities, industries, and maybe even worlds.”

Datta’s flame has now moved on to Amazon, where he serves as an applied scientist.

Rashid Alavi, Ph.D. ’23, another candidate for this year’s best Ph.D. thesis award, has been an innovator in using non-invasive methods like iPhone cameras to detect super silent heart attacks . Alavi continues his work as a James Boswell Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech.

“When you feel chest pain,” said Alavi, “you can place your iPhone over your neck, and it can tell you if the chest pain is related to a heart attack.”

Zalan Fabian, Ph.D. ’23, the remaining Ballhaus Prize finalist, found new insights in accelerating MRI and medical imaging scans. His proposed methods could aid radiologists and other medical doctors in two ways: improving the diagnostic value of medical images and reducing the duration of MRI scans, potentially making such scans cheaper and more efficient.
