General Rules

Liberty University undergraduate students will use the APA 7 formatting guidelines for student papers. To assist you in formatting, Liberty University's Writing Center provides a template paper and a  sample paper .

For undergraduate student papers, the following three sections are required:

  • Reference List

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you format your paper:

  • Fonts  – LU recommends that APA papers be typed in 12-point Times New Roman or 11-point Calibri fonts.
  • Use only one space at the end of each sentence in the body of your paper.
  • In general, APA papers should be double spaced throughout. A list of exceptions can be found here.
  • To make sure that your paper is double spaced throughout,  select the text ,  right click , select ' Paragraph ,' and look under the section ' Line Spacing ' as shown below:

research proposal template liberty university

  • Margins/Alignment  - Your paper should use 1-inch margins on standard-sized paper (8.5' X 11'). Make sure that you use  Align Left  (CTRL + L) on the paper, except for the title page.
  • Indentation – The first sentence in each new paragraph in the body of the paper should be indented a half inch. References use hanging indentation .
  • Headings: Please note that all headings are in title case. Level 1 headings should be centered (and in bold), and Level 2 and 3 headings should be left-aligned (and in bold or bold italic, respectively). Level 4 and 5 headings are indented like regular paragraphs. An example of formatting headings in a paper is available here .

Title Page: Please note the following elements should be present on the page:

  • There is no limit to the number of words in the title.
  • Add an extra blank double-spaced line between the title and author’s name
  • Name of each author (centered)
  • Name of department and institution (centered)
  • Course number and name (centered)
  • Instructor name (centered)
  • Assignment due date (centered)
  • NO running head
  • Page number in top right corner of the header, starting with page 1 on the title page

Create your own research proposal

A research proposal is a short document that summarises the research you want to undertake. If you cannot find a suitable advertised project, this is a route to create your own.

When creating a research proposal, you’ll need to consider the question or issue you want to address with your project. Think about the background of the subject and how your research will be an original contribution to the field. You’ll also need to think about the methods you'll use to conduct this research. Your proposal helps us assess your suitability for a research degree and decide if we can offer you the right supervision.

Preparation

You may want to make contact with 1 or more potential supervisors to discuss project ideas. They may also be able to help with funding your degree .

You can search our academics to find a supervisor whose research interests align to yours. When you find a match, contact them to discuss your proposals. Allow time for responses and to consider their feedback.

Learn how to make a supervisor enquiry

Writing your research proposal

You should keep it clear, objective and realistic. Include:

  • an outline of your research interests
  • your initial thoughts about your topic
  • clear objectives of what you aim to achieve or the question you want to address
  • references to previous work
  • why the research is relevant and original
  • your proposed method and general approach
  • why you believe the research should be funded
  • how your skills will help to conduct the research
  • any training you may need to undertake the project

How to structure your proposal

Your research proposal should include:

  • a working title for your project
  • up to 1,500 words (excluding a bibliography)

It’s best to write with short paragraphs and sentences. You can use images and diagrams if it’s appropriate.

Example structure:

  • introduction statement (200 words)
  • your background reading and the area you want to contribute to (400 words)
  • your research question or issue to investigate (200 words)
  • data sources, research methods and critical approaches to use (500 words)
  • conclusion on how your project will contribute to the field (200 words)
  • bibliography

Submit your proposal

Your potential supervisor will inform you of when to start the application process and how to include the details of your agreed project.

Additional Navigation

Below are example papers and templates for different academic writing styles required in Liberty’s programs.  Remember that you do have access to Grammarly, a helpful writing resource in many ways (please see this resource on Grammarly’s Place in the Writing Process ), but these links below are the writing style guides you should use as vetted by the university and its individual departments.

Students are encouraged to download and save the selected template file to their desktop in .dotm format. This will allow it to open as the same, unchanged template every time and prevent it from being overwritten.
