Tyler Wade returns to the Yankees organization after being DFA'd by Angels

tyler wade designated for assignment

NEW YORK – Back in November, the Yankees’ need to clear space on their 40-man roster led to Tyler Wade being designated for assignment.

At the time, it was something of a curious move, since the lefty-hitting Wade had defensive value as a utility man with the ability to play the outfield as well as three infield positions.

And he was a speedy runner and a base stealing threat, an element in short supply on the 2021 Yankees.

Nearly eight months later, Wade has returned to the Yankees organization.

On Thursday, the Yankees acquired Wade from the Los Angeles Angels in a trade that will send either cash considerations or a player to be named later to Los Angeles.

Wade, 27, was assigned to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“Excited to get him back in the organization,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Wade, who was recently designated for assignment by the Angels.

Given the “defensive versatility that he brings, his ability on the basepaths,’’ Boone said he “can certainly envision him’’ in the Bronx “at some point, if the need arises.’’

The Yankees do not currently have a need for him on their 26-man roster, and they've been pleased with the acquisition of veteran Marwin Gonzalez, who has essentially filled Wade's role as an all-purpose player off the bench.

In 67 games with the Angels this year, Wade slashed .218/.272/.544 with one home run, eight RBI and eight stolen bases in 13 attempts.

During his five seasons playing sporadically with the Yankees, Wade slashed .212/.290/.307 in 264 games, with 30 stolen bases in 38 attempts.

In a less-successful comeback story, the Yankees parted ways Wednesday with lefty-hitting first baseman Greg Bird, who was batting .218 with six homers, 22 RBI and a .679 OPS at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees traded Tyler Wade to the Angels on Monday, officially ending Wade’s time in the Bronx after he was designated for assignment Friday .

Wade heads to Los Angeles in exchange for either cash considerations or a player to be named later. The Yankees had seven days to trade Wade, who turns 27 on Tuesday.

The former fourth-round pick by the Yankees appeared in a career-high 103 games, with 145 plate appearances, in 2021 and was effective during an extended stretch of regular playing time in August when the Yankees dealt with COVID and injury issues.

Valued for his speed and ability to play all over the field, the Yankees spent much of last spring looking for an upgrade at the utility role spot, but Wade stuck around until he was among three Yankees designated for assignment on Friday, along with Clint Frazier and Rougned Odor.

The Yankees have traded Tyler Wade to the Angels.

Among the players added to the 40-man was Oswaldo Cabrera. The 22-year-old played second, third and shortstop in the minors last season and finished the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Yankees trade Tyler Wade to Angels in what feels like wasteful move

By thomas carannante | nov 22, 2021.

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 29: Tyler Wade #14 of the New York Yankees looks on from the dugout during the game against the Oakland Athletics at RingCentral Coliseum on August 29, 2021 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images)

We’ll be the first to admit that we’ve ragged on Tyler Wade for his many gaffes as a member of the New York Yankees . While getting rid of him isn’t exactly the most egregious move ever, we have to say the manner in which the team did kind of is.

On Friday, Wade was designated for assignment as part of the 40-man roster crunch so the team could protect a number of prospects from the Rule 5 Draft. On Monday, he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels for likely … nothing.

Our “beef” with getting rid of Wade stems from the fact the Yankees spent  years  hanging onto him as he failed to produce time and time again … only to get rid of him when he finally started to turn a corner both with his glove and bat.

Wade provided tremendous defensive versatility (no, it wasn’t Gold Glove caliber, but it greatly helped), speed on the base paths, and a lefty bat that was beginning to make heavier contact as the 2021 season progressed.

If the Yankees were mentioned in high-profile rumors or had even made a semblance of an impactful move yet, this probably wouldn’t be as big of a head-scratcher. But Wade carving out a role for himself after four underwhelming seasons and then being kicked to the curb?

Make it make sense, that’s all we ask! This team desperately needed speed and Wade was under team control for pennies.

The New York Yankees today announced that they have traded INF/OF Tyler Wade to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. — New York Yankees (@Yankees) November 22, 2021

The Yankees have traded Tyler Wade to the Angels. It doesn’t really make sense.

Wade found his bearings as a utility player, pinch runner and late-game defensive substitution. That’s a valuable role on any MLB team. And he showed his greatest promise with consistent contributions across 103 games this past season.

Unless the Yankees have grand plans that are being kept secret, then we’re not sure how subtracting Wade and trading him for an unknown commodity helps make this roster better. Did he move the needle in an eyebrow-raising manner? Not exactly. But he brought skills to the table that this team severely lacked.

For Angels fans: Tyler Wade is a speedy, left-handed super-utility infielder/outfielder. The Yankees have used him all over the field and as a regular pinch-runner. — Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) November 22, 2021

So many other guys could’ve been designate for assignment or traded to keep a roster spot for Wade. Miguel Andújar, Luke Voit and Domingo Germán are three players that come to mind who likely won’t have a role with this team in 2022. It’s understandable that the Yankees didn’t want to cut bait for a fraction of their value, but it’s hard to believe something else couldn’t have been worked out here.

Also, Andrew Velazquez and Wade — aka the only semblance of speed on the 2021 Yankees — are now  both  in Anaheim. Is that good?

The “good news” here? Wade is from California, so he’ll be returning home … to play with the two best names in the sport. Not bad for him. LA just needs some pitching … but he knows all about that having been in New York since 2017.

Yankees’ dumb offer to Justin Verlander proves why they’ll lose another offseason

The New York Yankees once again lost out on a free agent because their offer wasn't good enough. What's the point in being the Yankees anymore?

Yankees designate Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade for assignment

Yankees designate Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade for assignment

The Yankees designated Clint Frazier, Rougned Odor and Tyler Wade for assignment, the team announced Friday . The decision was made before the MLB clubs' deadline to set 40-man rosters.

Frazier, 27, had some of the worst stats in his career in 2021. The outfielder had 20 hits, 15 RBIs and a .186 batting average in comparison to his 31 runs, 38 RBIs and .267 batting average in 2019.

The Yankees acquired Odor from the Rangers before the start of the 2021 season. The infielder had a .202/.286/.379 mark over 361 plate appearances.

Wade, Yankees utility man, has a career .212 batting average in his five-year run with the team. He slashed .268/.354/.323 showing in 145 plate appearances in 2021.

The Yankees added right-hander pitchers Ron Marinaccio and Stephen Ridings, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, outfielder Everson Pereira, and left-hander pitcher JP Sears to the Major League roster.

(Photo: Jim McIsaac / Getty Images)

What do the moves mean for the 40-man?

Lindsey Adler, Yankees beat writer: After trading and DFAing a combined five players and protecting five prospects, the Yankees' 40-man roster is again full at 40 players. Their next big roster move deadline is Dec. 1, when they must choose whether or not to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players under team control.

Which release is the most surprising?

Adler: Wade's designation seems to be the most surprising. Wade is a versatile utility player who is projected to make around $700,000 in arbitration this year. Frazier was a non-tender candidate this year, but Wade played a lot of roles for the Yankees in 2021. Roster spots are valuable, however, and Cabrera, who was added to the 40-man roster, could fill a Wade-like role moving forward.

What doomed Frazier in New York?

Adler: Frazier's development was severely impacted after a concussion he suffered in spring training of 2018. Frazier says the symptoms lasted through the 2019 season, which he says impacted his outfield defense. Frazier was projected to earn $2.4 million in 2022 through arbitration, and his major-league season ended in late June after he was placed on the injured list for dizziness. General manager Brian Cashman said this week that Frazier would not be guaranteed a starting spot in the outfield in 2022, which would hinder the right-hander's playing time.

Rays Designate Utility Man for Assignment, Activate Walls

T he Tampa Bay Rays have designated Harold Ramírez for assignment on Friday, per Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Florida . His spot on the team will go to infielder Taylor Walls , who returns from the 60-day injured list. Ramírez, 29, began the season as the primary designated hitter , though he recently had been relegated to the small side of the platoon. Ramírez has never provided much power, although he did hit .306 in 242 games over the previous two seasons. Through 169 plate appearances in 2024, he’s batting .268 with four extra-base hits. He could garner some interest on the waiver wire.

Harold Ramírez DFA’d by Tampa Bay

Ramírez’s .268 average is good, but his free-swinging approach has produced fewer walks at 1.8 percent, leading to a dismal .284 OBP. He’s seen a decline in power with one home run and three doubles in 169 plate appearances. However, Ramírez is hitting .310 against left-handed pitchers this season in 58 plate appearances and is slugging only .379 against them. He’s an ideal option for a short-side platoon singles hitter with limited defensive value. More importantly, Ramírez lacks minor league options.

The Rays Chose Walls or Ramírez

The Rays parted with Ramírez for Walls and his versatile, strong defensive abilities on the roster. There’s also Amed Rosario who’s hitting quite well in an infield/outfield role and Jonny DeLuca offering more defensive value than Ramírez. Rosario, DeLuca, Walls and catcher Alex Jackson will be the Rays’ bench group for now. Ramírez was the odd man out due to DeLuca and Richie Palacios , who the Rays acquired in the Tyler Glasnow trade. Palacio is hitting .262/.335/.369 and his versatility has given the Rays to rotate players through the DH spot.

Despite Ramírez’s defensive limitations and quality results at the plate, it’s unlikely any potential trade partner would take on the remainder of his contract. Between his club control through 2025 and $3.8 million salary, the Rays could pull off a trade if they’re willing to pay down some of the money still owed to Ramírez. If Ramírez does reach waivers, he can reject an outright assignment for free agency while retaining his entire salary.

If Ramírez Hits Free Agency

Ramírez could go in that direction, potentially attracting teams to bring him on board. He’s a lifetime .322/.357/.455 hitter against left-handers and has control for next season. Ramírez would be paid the prorated league minimum for any time spent on his new club’s roster. The Rays will either trade Ramírez or place him on waivers in the coming days.

Oakland Athletics utility man Tyler Wade

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Ex-Yankees Utility Man DFA'd By Athletics; Could Third Stint In New York Be In Works?

  • Author: Patrick McAvoy

In this story:

New York Yankees

One former member of the New York Yankees is looking for a new home.

Former Yankees utility man Tyler Wade was designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon to open up a roster spot for right-handed pitcher Zach Neal, according to the club.

Wade was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft and made his professional debut in the Gulf Coast League in the same season. The utility man worked his way up the New York farm system and eventually made his big league debut during the 2017 campaign. Wade spent parts of five seasons in New York before being designated for assignment during the 2021 campaign.

Surprisingly, the 2021 season also was Wade's best big league campaign to date. In 2021, Wade appeared in a career-high 103 games and slashed .268/.354/.323 to go along with 17 stolen bases while seeing time at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field, right field, and as the club's designated hitter.

Wade latched on with the Los Angeles Angels in 2022 but was designated for assignment and traded back to the Yankees but didn't make his way back to the big league club. The 28-year-old joined the Athletics on a minor league deal ahead of the 2023 season and in 26 games at the big league level slashed .255/.309/.314. At this point, it wouldn't be too surprising to see a reunion back with the Yankees. New York could use more offensive depth and Wade already has had two stints in the organization.

Now that Wade has been designated for assignment clubs will have one week to claim him off waivers. If a team does so, they would immediately need to add Wade to the 40-man roster. If no team claims him, he can opt for free agency and sign elsewhere. Hopefully, he can get another opportunity shortly.

Avisaíl García cut by Miami Marlins, who owe the outfielder $24.6 million

The Miami Marlins parted ways with one of their unsuccessful and costly free agent signings when they designated Avisaíl García for assignment on Tuesday owing a little more than $24.6 million for the remainder of the outfielder’s contract.

The 32-year-old failed to fulfill expectations during his two full seasons in Miami. García signed a $53 million, four-year deal as a free agen t just before the lockout in December 2021, but his tenure with the Marlins consisted of poor offensive production and multiple stints on the injured list.

García had been sidelined because of a left hamstring strain and recently hit 2 for 19 (.105) during a five-game injury rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville.

“Since I’ve been here Avi’s been really great to me,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “A good teammate. Unfortunately, he had a lot of injuries. He was on the IL more than he played.”

García is owed $24,612,903 from his contract: $7,612,903 from the remainder of his $12 million salary this season, $12 million for 2025 and a $5 million buyout of a $12 million team option for 2026.

If he clears waivers and is released, which is likely, any team could sign him for a prorated share of the $740,000 major league minimum.

In García’s first season, injuries limited him to 98 games and he hit .224, with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Last season, the production worsened as García appeared in 37 games and hit three homers. He played in 18 games this season, relegated to a platoon role before encountering another injury setback.

During the club’s opening homestand this season, García became the target of repeated jeers from Marlins fans.

Before joining the Marlins, García hit 29 homers and drove in 86 runs — both career highs — with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2021. The 13-year veteran made the AL All-Star team as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 2017.

“He’s done a lot in the game. Not a lot of guys can say that,” Schumaker said.

White Sox Designate Jake Woodford For Assignment

By Steve Adams | June 7, 2024 at 1:47pm CDT

The White Sox have designated right-hander Jake Woodford for assignment, reports Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. He’ll be replaced on the roster by righty Jonathan Cannon , who’s being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte.

Drafted by St. Louis with the No. 39 overall pick in 2015, Woodford spent his entire career prior to the 2024 season in the Cardinals organization. He signed a minor league contract in Chicago over the winter. The 6’4″ righty has started two games for the South Siders but been tagged for 10 runs on 15 hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. He had a rough go in Charlotte as well, pitching 49 2/3 innings of 5.26 ERA ball across 10 starts.

Woodford did notch a 3.26 ERA in a swingman role with the Cardinals from 2021-22, although a paltry 15.4% strikeout rate and some very good fortune in terms of homer-to-flyball rate prompted fielding-independent metrics to take that number with a grain of salt. Woodford 3.93 FIP and 4.65 SIERA were both far more bearish.

In parts of six Triple-A seasons, Woodford has pitched to a 4.19 ERA with a 19.5% strikeout rate, 10.2% walk rate and above-average ground-ball tendencies. He’s out of minor league options, so any team that acquires him in a small trade or claims him on waivers will need to add him directly to the MLB roster. If he clears waivers, he’d have the right to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency. The Sox will either trade him or put him on waivers within the next five days, with waivers themselves representing a 48-hour process. Within a week’s time, Woodford will know the result of his DFA.

Cannon, 23, made his big league debut earlier this season but was hit hard in his first three MLB starts. He’s been hit hard in the minors as well, recording a 5.50 ERA in 37 2/3 frames, but the reeling White Sox will give him another look in the big leagues at a time when Garrett Crochet and Erick Fedde are their only two reliable starting pitchers. Cannon, a third-round pick in 2022, ranks among Chicago’s top pitching prospects and will likely receive ample opportunity to cement himself as a viable big league starter as the Sox navigate their latest rebuilding effort.

His HR off Clayton Chokeshaw is one of the best moments in MLB history.

' src=

Woodford gets the crap pounded out of him by the Red Sox then get a DFA. He is having a really bad week…

' src=

That was Brandon Woodruff, but don’t let that stop you from your incredibly clever “Chokeshaw” comment.

' src=

Cannon ranks among Chicago’s top pitching prospects? Explains a lot.

Tonight is an exciting for the White Sox. They will set the franchise record for consecutive losses. They’ll need to add someone to keep up with the number of records of ineptitude they will certainly set this year. By the way, has anyone asked Getz, or the great blowhard himself, the owner of this mess of an organization, their opinions of the team they put together this year. Oh, and, of course, let tlr explain his continuing role as an advisor to Reinsdorf.

Reinsdorf is keeping LaRussa around basically to get him health insurance.

' src=

avenger – Ummm …. they set the record last night, 14 straight. Previous record of 13 was exactly a century ago.

If there’s one game the ChiSox win in this series, it will be tonight. Crochet has actually been pretty good this year.

FPG… I know you are the man!! But I have to disagree!! If the WS win a game it will be Sunday!!! How do I know this?? Exhibit A… 1986.. Roger Clemens loses 1 game on road to 24-4 season yup and I was there!! Later on Pedro sailing through game… bring in reliever to give up 3 run bomb to a very young Joe(MF my nickname for him) Crede…, another loss… Chris Sale..vs Carlos Quintana years later… if not for the heroics of Devin Marerro best game as a mlb player) and my original guy Sam Travis I would have been saddled with another L.. oh still need convincing… Pap gives up tying Hr in bottom of 9 th to Jermaine Dye and another L in I believe 15/16 innings.. Defense rests your honor..Other than that the Red Sox love it when they come to Chi-Town and I’m attendance… one last nugget… I believe the 80’s Milt Wilcox has perfect game 8.2 innings only to give up a single to another friend of mine… Jerry ( can’t say what I call him) Hairston … buddy was huge Tigers fan… in closing…. If I’m there… Fisk’s homer goes foul/ Roberts comes off the bag and we’re still waiting….

' src=

That’s 2 men off the 40 man. 38 to go.

' src=

Plus there’s the Sox Crawl before the game!

Knew this was coming, Jake was absolute garbage last night and neither the manager nor pitching coach ever bothered to come out and talk to him while he was imploding. He was totally hung out to dry.

' src=

Fever- Saw nothing, from 1st pitch of the game for any coach to correct. like he was some kind of sacrificial lamb, o place holder just tossed out there and everyone in the chisox dugout was holding their noses entire time.

Might have been one of the worst performances seen for some time tho. Ryan weber-esque.

' src=

It seems as if every player on the forty-man roster is a “placeholder.” What’s scary is that all the kids they promote from the minors fail repeatedly. Even if they trade all of their potentially valuable assets for “prospects,” I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. It’s ironic that the owner’s explanation for hiring Getz from within was that team improvement could be achieved quickly than by going outside the organization.

' src=

Woodford, whatchu Goodfor?

' src=

Again! Not about the Reds. Chicago Bias !!!

San Francisco Giants

Luis matos hits walk-off sacrifice fly, giants relievers blank phillies in 1-0, 10-inning win.

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Luis Matos hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Spencer Howard pitched four scoreless innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the MLB-leading Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Tuesday night.

After the Phillies failed to score in the top of the 10th off Sean Hjelle (2-1), automatic runner Tyler Fitzgerald advanced to third on a flyball by Wilmer Flores before Matos knocked him in with a flyball to left off Matt Strahm (3-1).

Five San Francisco pitchers combined to shut down the Phillies for 10 innings. The Giants used an opener followed by Howard as the primary pitcher. For Sean Hjelle, who threw the last two innings, pitchers knew early on that everyone was locked in. He described a contagious feeling of passing on shutout innings from one pitcher to the next.

“I don’t want to be that guy that breaks it up,” Hjelle said.

The Giants have won 10 of their last 12 games, taking the first two games of the three-game series against the Phillies after being swept in a four-game set in Philadelphia earlier this month.

“We’re doing a lot of our best work late in the game,” manager Bob Melvin said. “So as long as we have a chance, we feel like we’re going to win the game if it's late.”

Philadelphia has lost three straight games for the first time this season, and has the best record in the majors at 38-18.

Howard, who began his career with the Phillies, held his former team to four scoreless innings in his first appearance of the season. He followed three shutout innings by teammates Erik Miller and Taylor Rogers to start the game. Howard, once a top prospect, has bounced around the last few seasons and signed a minor league contract with the Giants last year.

Howard said he tried not to be spiteful and that it was nice to pitch against familiar batters.

“Just trying to make them hit the ball,” Howard said. “The most value I could provide is to eat the most amount of innings and save the pen — however it may be.”

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler threw 101 pitches, striking out nine and allowing two hits. Once a highly-touted prospect in the Giants' organization, Wheeler has held San Francisco to one unearned run in two starts this season. He struck out 11 in seven innings in a 1-0 win in Philadelphia on May 6.

The Giants learned before the game that they would be without one of their best hitters this season, LaMonte Wade Jr ., for an extended stretch. Wade suffered a grade 2 hamstring strain sliding into second base on Monday and will miss at least four weeks.

Philles third baseman Alec Bohm had a scheduled day off after committing two errors in Monday’s loss, according to manager Rob Thomson. Bohm was dealing with “general aches and pains” and pinch-hit in the 10th.

Thomson said before the game that he trusts the team's defense and that Bohm sitting was not due to the defensive miscues. Bohm has four errors in his last seven games at third.

“That was just a weird game yesterday,” Thomson said. “He’s played really consistent. He’s really improved. I have no problems with him.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Phillies: SS Trea Turner , who has a strained left hamstring, hit off a tee for the first time since the injury on Tuesday and hopes to play catch on Wednesday.

Giants: Howard and IF Trenton Brooks were called up from Triple-A Sacramento, with Brooks filling in for Wade at first base and Howard pitching out of the bullpen. … Utility player Tyler Fitzgerald was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. … OF Ryan McKenna and LHP Drew Pomeranz were designated for assignment. … RHP Keaton Winn threw 45 pitches in a bullpen session on Monday and is close to returning, according to Melvin.

LHP Kyle Harrison (4-1, 3.90 ERA) pitches for the Giants against Cristopher Sanchez (2-3, 3.15 ERA) in the final game of the series.
