This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings

The Notebook Method: How Pen and Paper Can Transform You Into a Star Student

Unlike many hacks you read here, the strategy I want to describe today is not designed to reduce your study time (though I don’t think it will add much to your schedule either). Instead, its purpose is to help you transform from a good student into an exceptional student.

It starts with the simplest possible tools…pen and paper.

The Notebook Method

This method applies to the following academic situations, among others…

  • Writing an essay or paper.
  • Working on a problem set or technical take home exam.
  • Tackling a difficult book or reading assignment.
  • Designing a project for a computer science or engineering class.

The idea is simple…

  • Buy a sturdy college-ruled notebook dedicated to the relevant class. (I use the 100 page, 1 subject, college-ruled Stasher by Roaring Spring , but many people also swear by the Black n’ Red .)
  • Buy a good pen . (Nothing beats a black uniball micro 0.5mm .)
  • Take your notebook and pen and go to the most relaxing, meditative, non-distracting place possible . The deep stacks of the library is okay. Hiking 30 minutes into the woods or onto the dunes overlooking a windswept springtime beach is even better.
  • Spend 1 – 3 hours working out your thinking on the task at hand in the notebook . Spend the last 20 minutes carefully summarizing your results on a clean page that you mark with the date and a title.

The Notebook Method

Preceding this summary page in the notebook is another few pages of rougher notes, also from today, on which I was trying to work through the tricky details of these same ideas. This final page details the polished result of this thinking. I needed to get this right, and a long afternoon with my notebook was the only way I could coax what I needed from my mind.

Inside the Method

In an age of distraction, the notebook method produces a rare commodity: high-quality thinking — the type of thinking that can make a student into a star.

Its power sources from the following truths…

  • Writing down your thoughts forces you to clarify what you’re thinking and confront ambiguities or inconsistencies. It’s hard work! You’ll probably feel painful resistance the first few times you try this method, but you must persevere. Eventually you gain familiarity with the novel sensation of deep thinking.
  • You can’t check e-mail using a spiral-bound notebook. You also can’t update your Facebook profile or tweet about your YouTube channel. If you’re high up in the library stacks, or, better yet, in the woods or on the beach, it’s just you and your notebook. Eventually your urge toward distraction will give way.
  • Paper facilitates creative thinking. You can draw arrows, and circle concepts, and sketch structures. Something about a good ballpoint scraping across a thick-grained paper stock unlocks areas of your mind that tend to hibernate when you’re slumped over your laptop in a crowded study lounge.

This method applies anywhere that requires deep creative thinking. Use it to figure out your argument for an English course, or to master organic chemistry equations, or to deduce why, exactly, that Nietzsche book frustrated you so much on your first read through.

Regardless of how you apply this method, its result will be the same. It takes you out of student survival mode and helps you down the path toward mastering the increasingly lost art of good, hard, deep thinking.

I love the feel of a pen gliding on a big spiral-bound notebook. There’s someting there that makes me all warm inside. It must be the wide open space of an empty page that gives my thoughts room to spread out.

I’m entering doctoral school in the fall and a fellow student I’m taking an independent study with had me start a research journal. I got one of those big Miquelrius books and it’s become a journal, a central notes-store, a place to pour out despair an insights, etc. She said it’s good to keep it for a while and then go back to read earlier entries, as you’ll find clues to what interested you then that you may have forgotten about.

I can definitely vouch for this approach! It’s also a great way to free yourself from self-editing, because writing on paper feels less like a final draft than typing something into a computer. I probably waste hours just sitting in front of a computer trying to find the right word for something. On paper, there’s less pressure to be perfect so I just leave a line where the word needs to go and it usually pops into my head automatically when I’m typing it up.

Exactly, nothing beats having a dialogue with yourself on a paper, drawing diagrams, thinking aloud, highlighting the most important points later with a set of color pens. I definitely vote for this approach

Some of my math and science teachers made us keep class journals in high school: review and reflect on what you learned that week. Guess its a similar thing as this if not the same. Never enjoyed it in HS tho and didn’t get the point back then; I mostly just made up stuff the night before.

I like pencil and a cheap notebook from the dollar store because they have this mad genius feel to them (as opposed to the corporate feel of an expensive pen and notebook), but otherwise I totally agree with the premise.

I especially like how you said, “You can’t check email using a spiral notebook.” We certainly invite enough distractions these days, don’t we? I find that taking notes and re-typing them into Word is a great way to re-listen to the information and works great for memorization and studying. When I retype notes I feel like I’m logging the information I took down into my brain automatically without working too hard at the act of “studying.” Thanks for showing the benefits of the old notebook method!

What about using Binders instead of notebooks? I like to have a binder with notes from all my classes conveniently stored in it.

Excellent post, Cal. I agree with your major points. They work for me. But one minor detail to add. I too love the uniball micro 0.5mm pen, and I too love the Black n’ Red notebooks. But i have found that the uniball bleeds too much on the Black and Red pages. I have to end up using a ball point pen (I like the Zebra F-301) in my Black n’ Red.

I now remember that I have this same problem with uniball micro in my moleskin notebooks. On the other hand, they seem to work fine on legal pads and the cheap lined paper in standard college-ruled notebooks.

What about using Binders instead of notebooks?

I know it shouldn’t make a difference, but it does. Holding a binder with looseleaf paper is just not the same as propping a notebook on your knee. I tend to use plain manila folders to store papers for classes.

And yes, college students do need help with this because many of us have been lured into thinking that laptops will solve all of our problems, with schools like mine making laptops mandatory for all students… and for what? They are hardly ever used in class for anything official; most professors I’ve had hate them.

I use a paper notebook to do all my work and it makes everything a breeze. One technique I like to use is to formally write down the job/task I’m working on when I sit down, and to track start time, end time, total duration, and any distractions.

I love writing things down! It’s also just physically sitting and writing it down that makes it so comforting. Do you have any more ways to keep from getting distracted by things like email and facebook and stuff? Becaause that’s what I know is one of my biggest weaknesses for studying and working.

I’m glad that you have a more enlightened approach to organization in elementary and middle school. In contrast, where I did 1st through 7th grade each class had its own, specialized requirements (in English one year, you might have to have a specific type of composition notebook, whereas the next year you might need a 3/4″ three-ring binder with five divisions that would only ever be used for that class). Every assignment had to start with the same heading. The school actually produced its own assignment notebook, which you could never be without. A system like this can, I think, set in place overly rigid ideas of what it means to work and be productive.

In contrast, this post is free of these bureaucratic details. You just get a notebook and a pen that you like and use them in a way that makes sense to you, without worrying about offending someone’s sensibilities by scribbling something out (unacceptable penmanship!) or drawing arrows across the page to connect important ideas (distracting!) before you distill your work into a clear, legible summary. The only requirements here seem to be that you articulate your thoughts in rigorous detail, and that you concentrate on nothing else for a few hours. So I think it does represent something that many students may really never have tried.

This is such a simple idea, but it makes so much sense! I start every day by writing in a notebook, journal-style, because it helps me clarify my thoughts. Why wouldn’t I do the same thing for my classes?

Curiously enough, this is similar to the method I use for designing websites or code (especially object oriented code). I don’t go into the woods (it’s cold here), instead I do it in-between classes or when I’m too tired in class to stay awake (in which case being awake, alert, and distracted is superior to simply being asleep); but the general idea is the same: I don’t have a laptop, my notes are all taken on paper, so I start writing and diagramming, and all those questions of how X does Y or how I’ll do Z get written down for later, letting me ponder. That “letting me ponder” is important, more than most seem to realize; it’s funny how often I run across a smart capable person who doesn’t need me to answer their questions if they’d just realize that they could ponder it over and figure it out. Of course after I finish the lovely notebook period, there’s all that messy work with actually doing it…

Basically, as Daisy said before me, it’s just a something that I liked, that worked, that used up time that was otherwise wasted, never really thought of it as a “strategy”, but now that I do I realize this by far the superior way to design a website. Though because of the constant “redesign” aspect it can be nice to do it on a whiteboard; on the other hand re-drawing things in a notebook allows you to keep track of progression and return to or re-incorporate an old design.

I love holding a pencil in my hand and writing down my thoughts. Its very relaxing, whether I’m journaling or studying it helps me concentrate.

Ok, so this is a somewhat obsessive question…but what size notebook is best for this purpose? A5 or A4? Lol 😛

How did I born I don't know exactly, it is a very long story but i am going to share the portion of my life with you which is the interesting one. I was manufactured in a factory five years ago. After I was made, the "cross" was engraved on me. I was packed in a pretty box. Then I was put into a large box together with the other pens. We were happy together and spent a wonderful time talking to each other. I was transported to a large department store. I was taken out of my box and placed in the display tray along with other pens of different brands.

I was on display for only a short period. A grand old lady came to the store one day. She was looking for a gift. She bought me and presented me to a girl named Mary. Mary is a student and used me daily to do her school work. She took good care of me. She always wiped me clean after using me and placed me neatly in the box. She was very gentle with me and never handled me roughly. I admired my mistress and served her well.

My happiness did not last long. One day her grandmother bought her another pen. She stopped using me, and put me in my box. I am now stored away in her drawer. I live in the dark corner of the drawer hoping that one day she might use me again.

My pen is more than just a writing tool; it is a vessel for my thoughts and creativity to flow onto the page. It holds the power to give life to the words that dwell within me, translating them into physical form. Each stroke of my pen is a reflection of my emotions, ideas, and experiences, capturing the essence of who I am and what I wish to express. Through my pen, I am able to connect with others, leaving behind a trail of my inner world for them to explore and understand.

PEN America Has Stood By Authors. They Should Stand By PEN.

All strong institutions stand to benefit from internal dissent and external pressures. But too often, recent efforts to reform institutions have meant reconstituting them in ways that distort or fundamentally undermine their core mission.

Nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, university departments and cultural institutions have ousted leaders and sent their staffs into turmoil in pursuit of progressive political goals. In the wake of the 2016 election and the 2020 murder of George Floyd and in a rush to apply sweeping “ In this house we believe ” standards unilaterally, organizations have risked overt politicization, mission drift, irrelevance and even dissolution. And now the war in Gaza is ripping its way across American universities.

The latest target is PEN America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to free expression by journalists and authors. Last week, after an increasingly aggressive boycott campaign by some of its members, PEN canceled its annual World Voices Festival, which was conceived by Salman Rushdie and was to mark its 20th anniversary in May. This followed a refusal by several writers to have their work considered for PEN’s annual literary awards. The ceremony awarding those prizes was also canceled .

An open letter sent to PEN America’s board and trustees and republished on Literary Hub, now the de facto clearinghouse for pro-Palestinian literary-world sentiment, accused the organization of “implicit support of the Israeli occupation” and of “aiding and abetting genocide.” It demanded the resignation of PEN’s longtime C.E.O., Suzanne Nossel , and current president, Jennifer Finney Boylan . According to its 21 signatories, mostly up-and-coming authors, “among writers of conscience, there is no disagreement. There is fact and fiction. The fact is that Israel is leading a genocide of the Palestinian people.”

In response and in keeping with its mission of independence and free expression, PEN America accepted the writers’ willingness to voice their conscience. It has also made clear that there is room for more than one point of view on what constitutes genocide and on the current conflict in Gaza.

“As an organization open to all writers, we see no alternative but to remain home to this diversity of opinions and perspectives, even if, for some, that very openness becomes reason to exit,” PEN America stated in an open letter to its community.

That doesn’t mean PEN’s critics are without a point. I have also heard dissent from inside PEN that the organization has not been as strong in its advocacy for Palestinian writers since Oct. 7 as it has been for Ukrainian writers since the Russian invasion. I have seen internal letters describing this disparity in detail. Those grievances may well be legitimate, and PEN should respond appropriately, advocating on behalf of all writers caught up in conflict, repression and censorship, regardless of geopolitical circumstance.

But for those advocating that PEN America reform itself in the service of a single political agenda, the organization’s efforts to accommodate a range of views count against the organization. “Neutrality,” the authors of the most recent letter contend, “is a betrayal of justice.” Nothing short of total capitulation will serve their purpose. And they are conducting an intimidation campaign among other members and authors to join their ranks or shut up about it. According to PEN leaders, writers have expressed fear in openly supporting the organization in the onslaught of this latest campaign.

Since 2006, I’ve been one of PEN America’s 4,500-plus members, which includes writers, journalists, activists and professionals involved in the world of letters. I joined well before I joined The Times, after the publication of my second book, a liberal critique of the effects of online pornography, which met with a certain amount of pushback. As a freelance journalist and author who covered politically sensitive topics, I appreciated the protection PEN America offered. PEN takes a firm stand, for example, against online abuse , something every working journalist today experiences to one extent or another. PEN is also firmly committed to fighting book bans in schools, libraries and prisons, something that grew increasingly relevant to me when I became the editor of The New York Times Book Review.

Of course, these conflicts are minor compared with a war in which lives are at stake. But whatever my personal views on the Middle East, I don’t expect or even want all its members to conform to my brand of politics.

PEN brooked dissent before. In 2015 it honored the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo after its members were brutally attacked and in spite of opposition from some of its members. I appreciate that the organization has named a prominent transgender writer and activist as its president even if I do not share all her views when it comes to gender politics. I don’t have to agree with everything PEN does; in fact, I prefer that I don’t agree, because that opens me up to protection in kind from members who may not agree with me on all issues.

Even if we’ve grown inured to organizations losing their way under political pressure, we shouldn’t be indifferent to the potential consequences . Especially now that there are so few truly independent organizations left.

According to its charter , PEN “stands for the principle of unhampered transmission of thought within each nation and between all nations, and members pledge themselves to oppose any form of suppression of freedom of expression in the country and community to which they belong, as well as throughout the world wherever this is possible.” I prefer to stand by PEN America and by all its members, though perhaps quiet now, who would wish to see PEN’s mission upheld and strengthened rather than dismantled. Who does it really serve to keep tearing things down?

PEN America Writers Threw Their Own Party

On first view of Tuesday night’s sold-out Freedom to Write for Palestine reading, the event seemed almost indistinguishable from what that corner of the city has seen in recent weeks. For blocks, I had walked behind someone (an author, perhaps?) wearing a keffiyeh around their shoulders, only for them to peel off in the direction of Washington Square Park — the site, along with bits of New York University property around it, of near-constant student-led protests and encampments, the most recent of which had been cleared less than a week before. Judson Memorial Church, which sits on the southern edge of the park, had its doors flung open, and a dozen or so people were standing outside in the 80-degree heat. I made my way inside, where the front rows were already filling up with a crowd of all ages wearing hijabs, protest-slogan T-shirts, and recently unburied summer dresses.

The event, benefiting We Are Not Numbers , a writing nonprofit in Gaza, was held in response to a series of issues that have destabilized the American PEN chapter in recent months. PEN America’s delayed and, many believe, inadequate response to Israel’s occupation of Gaza led just under half of nominated authors to drop out of the running for its literary awards; nine out of ten nominees withdrew from consideration for the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award, which comes with a $75,000 prize. Many others, including Naomi Klein and Isabella Hammad, withdrew from its prestigious annual World Voices Festival. In response, the organization canceled both the awards ceremony and the festival, which were set to be held this spring. (Winners were chosen, but cash prizes that could not be awarded because the winner had withdrawn were allocated elsewhere, and the $75,000 prize was donated to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund at the direction of Jean Stein’s estate. PEN America’s gala is still scheduled for later this month.)

Over the course of two hours, as the audience watched from folding chairs, 18 authors and translators — and one musician, Huda Asfour, who sang and played the oud — got up to speak in front of a duo of carved stone angels and a verse from Matthew on the wall behind them. They included Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow , and Sabrina Imbler, who both withdrew from the World Voices Festival; the poet Evie Shockley, who withdrew from the PEN awards; and Esther Allen, a writer and translator who co-founded World Voices in 2004 with Salman Rushdie and Michael Roberts, as well as Mark Nowak, Seth Goldman, and Lorraine Garret of the Worker Writers School, whose members typically perform at the festival. A large portion of the room seemed to have some connection to PEN America itself. There were laughs at in-jokes and hisses at the mention of PEN executive Suzanne Nossel’s salary. “I am not cool enough to get an invitation to decline, but I have secondhand declination,” said emcee Derecka Purnell, a writer and lawyer.

“The night was just about trying to provide a base and a focal point and a point at which the writers who are pulling out of something communal, instead of being left alone, also get to be in community,” Omar Robert Hamilton, co-founder of the Palestine Festival of Literature, which organized the event along with Writers Against the War on Gaza and Amplify Palestine, told me earlier in the afternoon. “I think when authors are faced with organizations that are trying to impose this silence on them, trying to have events and festivals and awards that claim they’re above politics — what does that mean? That’s just a total fallacy. And that’s what’s being rejected.”

Hari Kunzru, a novelist and journalist who read an excerpt from a 2017 piece he wrote after a visit to Palestine, told me his decision to withdraw from the World Voices Festival was not made lightly. He’s unhappy with some media coverage of the boycott, including a recent piece in The Atlantic . “It seems to imply that there’s this kind of evil group of writers who are intimidating their peers into silence with some kind of authoritarian position, which I think is a disgusting slant,” he said. “But what’s happened is that the different groups of people have kind of come to these conclusions in different ways. It’s been very scattered, and it’s been to do with people following their own conscience.” As a former English PEN deputy president, he said, “my relationship is one of somebody who thinks that PEN’s mission is very important. I think PEN needs a reset in the U.S., and it might be very useful for American PEN to look at how other countries are doing things.”

“The thing I want to acknowledge is that some of the people who’ve withdrawn are very established writers and can make these kinds of gestures without much cost to themselves,” Kunzru said. “But some of the people who have withdrawn are, for example, debut novelists for whom a prize nomination is the biggest thing that’s happened to them. It’s quite a big sacrifice to turn it down — and yet they have.”

The reading opened with comments from the novelist and We Are Not Numbers mentor Nancy Kricorian, who harshly criticized the U.S. wing of the organization. “While PEN America has organized a street rally in support of Ukrainian writers imprisoned by Russia and taken a delegation of Ukrainian writers to meet with Congress,” she said, “it has yet to organize any event on behalf of Palestinian writers who have been imprisoned and killed by Israel.” PEN America’s call for a cease-fire, she said, “came only after over 1,000 writers had signed a letter denouncing the organization for its inaction.” (The organization has pushed back against criticisms, claiming to have offered direct assistance to Palestinian authors, citing statements about the war it has made since October 7, and forming a working group to review its work going back ten years.)

“PEN America’s priorities so often align with the U.S. government’s own foreign-policy goals that one writer quipped, ‘PEN America has turned into an outpost of the U.S. State Department,’” Kricorian said. When she mentioned PEN America United, the organization’s union, cheers erupted.

The translator Nicholas Glastonbury, who read a poem after participants performed works by Gazan writer Haya Abu Nasser and Palestinian American Fady Joudah, was even less equivocal. “You think about the work that goes into making Israel-slash-Palestine a common sense, a whole empire, brutalizing and bombing the world over in order to preserve this lexical gesture and entire literary apparatus conscripting the cultural capital of its most middling writers in the service of this declension, this move to innocence that attempts to make Palestine unthinkable on its own,” he said. The audience broke into giggles and claps at his mention of “middling writers.”

The room quieted when Mahmoud Alyazji, a young writer from Gaza, read a piece about his friend Mohammed Zaher Hamo , who was killed by an Israeli air strike in November, as a slideshow of images of Hamo played behind him. “Before I sleep, I have this image of your body under the rubble that flashes into my mind and makes me sick,” he read. “I pick up my phone and go to our photos. I look at you carrying that watermelon on the beach and smiling in hopes it will wipe out the cruel image of your cold body.”

Afterward, a scattering of people hung around for a while, talking by the stage and grabbing copies of The New York War Crimes . The space — “this glorious radical church,” as one person described it — was echoey and a little humid, with portraits of people like Audre Lorde and Bayard Rustin gazing down from overhead. “I’m someone who’s been to a fair number of readings, but to be in this incredible space with these stained-glass windows of thinkers and writers, and also to hear from writers who were relaying poems from writers who were not able to be here, was incredible,” said Sophie van Well Groeneveld, who came with friends from her creative-writing graduate program.

As chairs were folded and put away, readers and audience members lingered in clusters in the warm night air. Across the street, the park was still buzzing with activity and music.
