Seek expert advice, tackle creative blocks and prepare your manuscript for publication with creative writing mentoring from National Centre for Writing

Looking for advice? Need feedback on your writing? Creative writing mentoring is an opportunity for one-to-one exchange between you and an expert writing mentor, where you can receive in-depth advice on taking your work forward, wherever you are in your writing journey.

Mentoring is tailored to your needs, focussing on your writing priorities, and can either be delivered in a single session or over a more sustained period, depending on your challenges and budget.

Writers of all kinds often face challenges, from finding the time to write and tackling creative blocks to preparing manuscripts for publication. This is why we have developed flexible mentoring packages through which writers can work individually with an experienced mentor to overcome all kinds of obstacles.

Our mentors are uniquely placed to help writers of all levels, from the finer details of a specific project to the bigger picture of your life as a writer. Working one-to-one, each session is focused on how best to help you, wherever you are in your writing journey.

What is mentoring?

Creative writing mentoring consists of an hour-long, one-to-one session with an experienced writer mentor. Your session will focus on how best to help you, whether you are at the start of a project and seeking ways to develop your craft; working on a manuscript and needing advice on a particular issue; or are seeking feedback on a finished piece of work and wondering about next steps. One of our mentors is also well placed to assist with creative funding applications and practical career advice.

To get started, we advise you to book an introductory session with the mentor of your choice. Together, you will talk through your project and the main obstacles that you’re facing.

Mentoring works best as a sustained relationship over a period of time. If you’d like to commit to a longer period of structured feedback and support, take advantage of our bundle discount and secure several sessions over a period of weeks or months. Develop a professional relationship with your mentor and together you can refine your manuscript, work on a funding application or implement an action plan to improve your creative practice.

We currently offer online mentoring sessions for writers of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, children’s and YA literature, developing your creative practice, and much more.

Browse our mentoring packages below, or read on to learn more about the benefits of mentoring and whether it is right for you.

Plan, make and measure progress

Unlike a creative writing class or group feedback session, mentoring usually takes place one-on-one. Creative writing mentoring is an opportunity to receive in-depth advice on taking your work forward.

A mentor is not an editor or agent – they won’t correct your work or make artistic decisions for you, and mentoring does not guarantee a route to publication.

Mentoring also goes beyond a one-off manuscript assessment. There is the potential to share your writing and explore new ways of working over a period of time. Rather than receiving a verdict on a finished product, mentoring will help you plan, make and measure your progress.

How does mentoring work?

Creative writing mentoring offers a personalised, one-to-one session of feedback and advice with an experienced mentor writer. Click to read more about how sessions are structured, how to prepare in advance, and more.

Hear from our alumni

‘The sessions have been one of the best investments I have made – I feel as though I have had a university-course worth of teaching for a fraction of the price!’

‘I am blown away by the depth and sensitivity of your observations. I have learned so much from this time working with you. Thank you so much for the quality of your input. I feel like I have learned to tell a story in the process of writing it with you.‘

‘Julia’s advice was crucial in helping me not only with this bid, but with future bids. She is patient (I had a lot of what I thought were embarrassingly obvious questions) and professional and I came away with the confidence to bid and bid again in the future. I cannot recommend her highly enough.’

I needed an outside, objective assessment of my writing from an experienced poet and that is exactly what I got. She seemed to grasp intuitively, exactly what I wanted to express. I have re-read the notes I made several times now. I found it invaluable and was still buzzing the next day. I wished I had done it sooner.

Got a question? Not sure what’s right for you?

If you still have questions, get in touch with the learning team by email [email protected] or phone (+44) 01603 877177 between our working hours of 9am – 5pm BST, Monday to Friday.

Yes. You are a writer*

*when life, work, relationships, self-doubt and writer’s block aren’t getting in the way.

The world wants to read your story.

So please, don’t keep it to yourself. I’m a writing coach on a mission to help you find your voice and become an author through tailored one-to-one coaching and mentoring.

GET WRITING

creative writing coach uk

In your dreams you can picture it so clearly…

It’s 8pm. A cosy, low-lit bookstore hums with the buzz of excited voices.

Your friends and family are all there, lukewarm wine and stale crisps in hand. Tables teeter with hardback books. Your name is lettered down every spine, across every cover. You’ve even signed some of them.

Your editor launches into a rousing speech about the book of the year...

...which just so happens to be your debut novel.

The pull you feel to be a writer is so strong there are weeks where it’s all you think about.

(When you’ve had that third glass of wine, it’s all you talk about too…) And yet, you’re still not really, properly, actually writing.

Sure, you have ideas. Those passages in notebooks and random notes saved on your iPhone. But nothing tangible. There’s still no big, official B-O-O-K.

Because every time you get started, you follow the same pattern:

Getting up early to steal pockets of time with your new beloved story…

...finding any spare moment you can to sneak off and be with your manuscript again.

Writing, writing, writing.

It’s going so well. You even dare to think maybe, you might, possibly, actually, for the first time… finish a novel!

You’re unstoppable. The words are flowing out of you! Until… just like that… they’re not.

Those horrible voices creep in, filling your head with reasons you’re not good enough. You’re not creative enough. You can’t spell properly. You can’t stick at writing for more than a few weeks. You don’t have the discipline to even finish a first draft.

On and on the list goes…

Meanwhile, the words on the page dwindle to nothing. Your ideas dry up and you convince yourself no one cares what you have to say anyway.

HELP, THIS IS ME

JWW_FaceTime_photo_shoot_Lou_0024_edited_edited.jpg

I’m Lou, and trust me: The world wants to hear your story.

But having worked in the publishing industry for over 12 years, I’m painfully aware how difficult it is to get feedback on your work, not to mention how smoke-and-mirrors the book world is when you’re not inside it.

Add to that the technicalities, time commitment and good old dollop of self-doubt that come hand-in-hand with trying to write a novel, and it’s easy to fall off the writing wagon and sideline your dreams of becoming an author.

The thing is, life will always get in the way of your writing if you let it.

But I want you to get those big, beautiful ideas onto the page. Because I promise you, there’s someone out there who needs to read them.

So I’m here to be your writing coach and wing woman. Let’s get that book written.

TESTIMONIALS

“Lou helped me create a clear structure for my story, which enabled me to write it. Invaluable.”

“I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of working with Lou on my children’s book. She listened to my idea and asked pointed questions so I could refine it… then helped me create a clear structure for my story, which enabled me to write it.

Once I had written the first draft, she continued to positively and considerately comment on the text, so I was able to edit it confidently, and write a second, third and fourth draft. I was genuinely excited every time I spoke to Lou because she was so positive and encouraging and always had such invaluable advice on how I could improve the story.

I felt extremely supported by Lou during the whole process. She always pushed me to clarify my ideas but never led me in a direction that wasn’t true to my original idea. Invaluable.”

“There are plenty of people who promise to help you write and get published but Lou really is one of a kind.”

Even with experience of the publishing industry, when it came to turning my own idea into a book draft and proposal, I simply couldn't have done it without Lou.

She combines industry-leading experience with such a warm and fun coaching style. There are plenty of people who promise to help you write and get published but Lou really is one of a kind.

I'd recommend her to anyone who wants to stop sitting on their idea and get her support to get it out into the world.

Kim, Business & Career Coach

“Lou gave me the constructive criticism I needed to self publish.”

“As I was self-publishing, the initial support from Lou was vital. I wanted to provide reading material that children can understand, relate to and become excited about.

One-to-one sessions with Lou gave me the necessary constructive criticism I needed in order to get my children’s picture-book manuscript to a successful point.

My characters certainly blossomed with her input. Compost the Cat is the debut book of the series ‘The Adventures of Compost’ and I am hoping to work with Lou again on my next books.”

Write a book with the help of a publishing professional

Almost anyone can write better just through practice and reading. Becoming a great writer, however, can feel like an uphill climb if you don’t have access to the education, community, and mentorship often found in two-year university MFA programs.

Writing coaches offer a great alternative to the traditional academic approach to becoming a writer. Think of it as an apprenticeship in creative writing . You’re out of the classroom and on the job, creating something while learning new skills from a seasoned professional.

Your coach will work with you to develop your ideas into an outline, set goals to keep you on track, provide honest feedback on your progress, and give you the resources, education, and motivation to take your writing to the next level. They’re your teacher, cheerleader, confidante, taskmaster, and industry expert — all rolled into one.

With Reedsy, you can find writing coaches from every background with a wealth of experience in their chosen genres.

What can you expect from your writing coach?

Along with their specialty genres, each writing coach will have a unique teaching style, ranging from nurturing to brutally honest. No matter their approach, all Reedsy writing coaches offer:

  • Video-call sessions to discuss your needs, develop your ideas, and build concepts in a creative environment;
  • Guidance and motivation as you develop and draft your project;
  • Practical feedback on your writing; and
  • Accountability to keep you on track.

A writing coach will not directly edit your manuscript, but they will provide guidance to help you get it ready for the final editing stages. If your coach also offers editing on Reedsy, you can discuss continuing your work together after you finish drafting.

Why you can trust Reedsy writing coaches

Our writing coaches have worked with some of the best writers in the world as editors and co-authors. They know how to develop an author’s mastery of the writing craft and are also intimately familiar with today’s competitive publishing market.

With years of industry experience, often at the heart of major publishing houses, Reedsy professionals know what it takes to create a commercially successful book — the kind both publishers and readers are desperate to get their hands on.

Jacqui says:

I’m Jacqui Lofthouse, Founder of The Writing Coach. I completed my MA in Creative Writing at University of East Anglia under Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain and was the first traditionally published novelist in the UK to also qualify as a life coach. My novels have been published by Penguin and Bloomsbury and have sold 100,000 copies.

Having spent over twenty-five years as a novelist and writing coach, I have worked with hundreds of writers at all stages of their careers, from beginners to international prizewinning authors. I have taught creative writing in a wide variety of settings from prisons to universities. I understand that what all writers need most are self-belief, community and a structured approach to writing.

I help writers who are struggling to complete projects by teaching them focus, core creative writing skills and marketing – enabling them to finish books, get published and gain an audience for their work. My approach is the most nurturing in the business. It is my mission to make meaning through creative work and to support you as you forge your unique creative path.

Questions? We've Got Answers

  • Start date: At any time – applications all year round
  • 20 writing assignments (including a chapter outline, a book synopsis, a book timeline, an editing skills exercise and a cover letter)

Absolutely. You have direct communication with your tutor for the duration of the course. The more questions you ask, the more you will get out of the course.

You will get lifetime access to the course. You will also benefit from future updates and improvements to the course.

For the majority of our courses, only your tutor will see your work. It will remain completely private unless you get it published. The journalism courses might see your work published in the public domain, but you do have the final say as to whether or not this happens.

You will receive a Writers College Certificate upon successful completion of the course, provided you meet the following conditions:

  • You must have completed the 20 writing tasks.
  • The course must have been completed within 24 months of registration.
  • A minimum average of 50% for the course must be achieved.
  • Excellent writing skills are essential.
  • We will require a rough synopsis of your proposed book and an example of your writing.
  • Computer skills as well as email and Internet access are required.

Because you will work with an individual tutor, you can start your course as soon as your application has been approved. There are no specific start dates as would be the case with a traditional college.

An application is usually approved within one working day. Once we receive proof of payment, your can start your course.

You could be starting your course today!

This is hard to predict as some people are simply faster writers than others. However, for each 1000 words of your book, anticipate spending about an hour researching, an hour writing, and at least the same amount of time revising. The exercises should take around two hours each to complete. Finally, you should expect to spend some time at the end of the course giving your manuscript a final polish. This adds up to approximately 70 hours for the ten-module course or around six to seven hours a month for 12 months.

Once your application has been approved, you will receive notification of approval and an invoice via email. As soon as we receive proof of payment, the first module as well as your tutor’s email address and your login details will be sent to you. Your tutor will also be in touch to welcome you.

Any work created on our courses is owned by you. We will never make a claim to anything you produce. We follow the rule that copyright subsists with the creator (you).

'Had I not had this course to push me to getting this book written, it is highly likely that the book would have disappeared under the weight of other tasks.'

Writers Make Progress and Gain Confidence with a Writing Coach

At any stage in your writing career, you can hit a point where you need inspiration, input, ideas, guidance and accountability that just aren’t coming on their own.

  • You’re looking at the world of publishing wondering how to break in.
  • You're already in the world of publishing and wonder what on earth you’ve gotten yourself into.
  • You're overwhelmed and frustrated by platform, marketing, and social media.
  • You want to start something new—freelance writing, litmag submissions, a novel or nonfiction book—and have no idea where to begin.
  • You want to level-up your writing and crave honest input on your work from a professional who will spot your weaknesses and help you improve—all with a positive approach.
  • You got the contract, but you’re stymied. Stuck. Mired down in the middle of your manuscript. Will you meet the deadline?

Wouldn't it be nice to talk through and generate ideas with a professional other than your friend, agent, or editor— someone you can bounce ideas off of, who understands how to work with a manuscript at the developmental level ?

When you’re trying to organize your writing life and reach your writing goals, wouldn't you appreciate some guidance along the way?

You’re set on finishing a project and submitting your work, but you keep second-guessing yourself and getting sidetracked. How can you get back in motion with some degree of confidence?

You’d like to know if your writing has potential. Who can you ask for input other than an editor?

You could use accountability, but who’s going to hold you to it?

You want to i mprove as a writer and beef up your skills , but sometimes an editor's remarks feel harsh and distant. Could a coach offer advice while staying upbeat and positive?

You’re searching for answers about everything from finding an agent to writing a query, turning up a sea of ideas and recommendations, unsure what applies to your particular situation. Can someone point you to answers for you ?

Save time, gain confidence, and get the input you're looking for from a writing coach.

The first thing I tell beginning writers, hire a writing coach. Specifically, hire Ann!

"The first thing I tell beginning writers, hire a writing coach . Specifically, hire Ann! Next to my family, Ann has been my biggest cheerleader, encourager, and supporter. She enthusiastically champions my work and reminds me of my 'why' when I forget. She not only says my words matter and they have a place in the world,  she whole-heartedly believes it. From providing practical writing coaching to teaching me about the publishing world to guiding me through the process of signing with my agent — Ann has been the single best investment in my writing journey."

Michelle Derusha

Author, Naturalist

Her encouragement and support were exactly what I needed to find my true north once again as a writer.

“Ann Kroeker brings a unique blend of intentional practicality and exuberant creativity to her coaching. She is a brilliant brainstormer, but she is also a master at helping a writer whittle down myriad ideas into manageable steps and a practical plan of action. Ann is also one of the most positive, encouraging people I know. I originally signed on to work with her on creating a marketing and promotion plan for an upcoming book release, but quickly discovered her encouragement and support were exactly what I needed to find my true north once again as a writer.”

Book Writing Coach

Do You Need a Book Coach?

book writing coach Creativity Lisa Tener

Why hire a book coach? Maybe you’re ready to finally write your book and you need help developing your book concept and structure. Or you have no idea where on earth to start and you figure a book writing or publishing coach can guide you on those very first steps.

Maybe, in addition to expert guidance, you need accountability and support to get it done. And perhaps you also want help accessing your inner muse, your creative source…

You came to the right place!

Some clients also need guidance in making the right publishing decision: “Do I self publish or do I have a chance at a traditional book deal?” Your book writing coach can help you weigh the pros and cons of each type of publishing, particularly for the book you want to write.

And a book coach (at least, this book coach) can help you understand what it would take for you to attract a book deal and whether your book is a likely candidate.

Get Help with Your Book, Book Proposal, Creativity, Author Platform, Marketing and More

Lisa Tener and her team can help you write your book or book proposal, as well as guide you with the “platform building” (developing a following and reach online and offline) that publishers are looking for.

Lisa can help you develop a publishing strategy and can also connect you with publishing industry professionals who can help you with various aspects of the journey from editors to ghostwriters to social media and PR experts to web designers and marketing experts, as well as literary agents and publishers.

Break Through Creative Blocks or Challenges

Lisa and her team also help authors get in touch with their creativity and facilitates creative breakthroughs in:

  • Clarity of direction
  • Creative confidence
  • Creative Momentum
  • Successful Completion

Your Book Writing Coach Can Help You:

book writing consultation

  • Develop a plan for success, so that you reach those goals.
  • Taking action each week to reach your goals
  • Having accountability to support your success
  • Addressing any challenges you’re having in meeting your goals and overcoming any roadblocks to achievement Learning from “mistakes” and turning them into opportunities
  • Assess your progress and make any necessary changes to your plan.
  • Organize and develop your book or book proposal.
  • Improve and polish your writing—and can edit your work and teach you to be a better writer.
  • Expand your author platform.
  • Develop a powerful and effective promotion plan for your book and other creative projects.

In addition, your book writing coach has the tools and insight to help you:

book coaching with Lisa Tener

  • Overcome creativity blocks
  • Prioritize projects
  • Manage your time effectively and find the time to write and get published
  • Make the process easier, more fun and more effective

Many people also choose to enroll in the Get Your Writing Done Program , for the accountability and support to write in community once a week. The two hour weekly writing intensive includes some warm up exercises (movement, breath, and other creativity boosters) and intention setting to get us writing in a state of flow. Then we write for 35-45 minutes, share insights, questions and challenges, then start another block of moment, creativity boosters and writing. Optional ten minute breakout groups at the end offer the opportunity to read aloud to a partner or just share your experience with them.

Once a year, usually in the spring, Lisa offers her  Bring Your Book to Life® Program , where you benefit from a combination of:

  • Private consultations with Lisa—your personal book writing coach
  • Step-by-step course materials to guide you through the book writing process
  • Interactive classes (by Zoom)
  • Feedback on your writing.

“The Goddess of Voice”

book coaching client Cathy Turney

I call book writing coach Lisa Tener ‘the Goddess of Voice.’ She’s magical! Lisa wrapped her brilliant mind around my book ( Laugh Your Way to Real Estate Sales Success ), resulting in its winning the American Business Awards Best Business Book of the Year 2015, nationally and internationally. I didn’t think twice about hiring her to coach my next book, Get 10,000 Twitter Followers – Easily, Quickly, Ethically.   Cathy Turney’s latest book I had interviewed six other book writing coaches at the San Francisco Writers Conference, and in 15 minutes Lisa had more insight into what I was trying to accomplish than the other five combined. With Lisa Tener you get the eyes of a master book writing coach on your manuscript—one with proven results with the Big Six publishers. Your book only gets one chance to become a top seller. Don’t risk it. Let Lisa Tener make it the best it can be.                                               – Cathy Turney, Stevie Award-winning author and humorist

Or call 401-477-0886

In a writing coaching program, you’ll develop your inspiring goal(s) and develop your book concept for an exceptional book that has great value for your readers . Over the next sessions, you’ll develop the road map to reaching those goals by assessing where you are now in relation to those goals, creating a vision for where you want to be and developing and implementing your plan for getting there.

Note: Lisa works hard to find top notch editors of high integrity–and at different price ranges depending on your budget.  We do receive a commission–it will come out of the editor’s or ghostwriter’s marketing budget, not your costs.
