How to Make a Great “Any Questions” Final PowerPoint Slide (PPT)

Close your PowerPoint presentation with an inspiring Q&A (any questions) slide to engage your audience. Learn how to create the best questions PowerPoint slides and when to use them in this tutorial.

Hero Any Questions Final Slide PowerPoint

We tend to think of presentations as our chance to speak to an audience. Some of the best presentations I’ve attended ended with a “question and answer” (Q&A) session where the audience can ask the speaker questions.

In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can build slides that facilitate the Q&A part of your presentation. A well-designed Q&A slide may lead the audience to ask an interesting question.

In this tutorial, I’ll teach you to end your presentation by interacting with your audience. We’ll work on designing a questions slide in PowerPoint. You’ll learn how to ask for questions from the audience and answer them confidently.

How to Ask for Questions and Spark Audience Participation

I’ve sat through many presentations that close with the presenter sheepishly asking, “Uh, any questions?”

Asking this way will virtually guarantee that the audience won’t ask a question. The audience may start clapping before anyone even works up the courage to ask a question!

4 Ways to Ask for Questions

There are better ways to ask for questions. Instead of using the bland “any questions?” phrase that’ll leave the audience slack-jawed. Try out something more creative to actually elicit questions.

These are four techniques that I’ve personally used to inspire questions from the audience:

  • Seed someone in the audience like a friend or colleague to ask the first question. Sometimes, having someone break through the silence and ask the first question will help others speak up or ask follow-up questions.
  • Answer your own question at the end of the presentation. Use phrasing like, “When I first started this project, my main question was…” Doing so will spark questions for audience members.
  • Consider asking for questions somewhere in the mid-point of the presentation when the content is still fresh and relevant.
  • Use a creative way of asking for questions in a persuasive presentation, such as “What’s the part of my presentation you most disagree with, and why?” This can create spirited discussions with audience members and can start an open dialogue.

How to Prepare for Audience Questions

Many presenters will skip including a Q&A altogether. I think there’s a simple explanation for why many presenters don’t ask for questions from the audience: fear.

Many presenters fear being caught off-guard by the audience’s questions. You never know what the audience may be wondering before you ask for questions. That uncertainty leads presenters to exclude it altogether.

While you can never be certain of the questions you’ll receive, you can take steps to prepare for the questions you’re most likely to hear from the audience.

Consider these tips when you’re preparing for the Q&A part of your presentation:

  • Give your presentation to a smaller audience before the major presentation. Using that as a test run for questions may help you prepare for the same questions you’ll receive later on.
  • Think about the questions you answered in your own mind while preparing the presentation. Chances are that the audience will share many of the same questions and want to hear how you arrived at your conclusion.
  • Create backup slides that have extra data or charts on them to explain answers to possible questions your audience will raise. Having that perfect supplemental chart hiding at the end can really wow your audience when you’ve prepared for the question.

Essentially, you should spend time trying to anticipate what the audience is going to ask. Put yourself in their shoes and consider their background, and the questions they have may become obvious.

Above all: it’s okay if you don’t know the answer to all the audience’s questions. Generally, the questions will be open-ended and there’s no “correct” answer, and the audience will just want to know what your thoughts are.

If it’s a specific question that requires a numeric answer that you need to research, simply follow up with the audience member after the presentation with your findings. It’s okay to say, “I’ll get back to you with that answer.”

3 Strong Designs for Your Closing Slide

So far, we’ve talked about how to make the Q&A part of your presentation engaging. Let’s dive into creating the last slide in PowerPoint to show on screen to encourage questions from your audience.

In this section, we’ll also take a look at two other approaches for closing out your presentation. I’ll offer more designs and content ideas for closing out your presentation in a strong way.

For this tutorial, I’m going to make recommendations for how to create an engaging closing slide using the Clean PowerPoint theme .

Clean PowerPoint theme on Envato Elements

Clean is a PowerPoint theme that’s available on Envato Elements. The template has a modern and minimal design so your audience can focus on the content of your presentation. It also comes with more than 50 unique slides, plenty of vector icons, and image placeholders.

Let’s look at how to use Eureka for customizing three different closing slides:

1. The “Thank You” Slide

A Q&A slide could say “any questions?”, but you could also use that questions slide in PowerPoint to thank the audience and verbally ask for questions. This is a simple way to show gratitude that the audience took time to listen.

Clean has a pre-built slide to thank the audience for their attendance. Use thank you PowerPoint slide design #48, which has everything you need. You can also add a background image by clicking on the placeholder and choosing an image on your computer.

Thank you slide

It’s a basic slide, but using Clean’s “Thank you” placeholder (slide #48) is a great example of premium themes saving time.

2. The “Any Questions?” Slide?

Now, let’s take a look at questions slide designs that work well for asking for questions from the audience.

The first of these is PowerPoint slide design #23. It’s a simple pre-built slide with few text blocks and a “What we do?” as the presentation placeholder text. Easily change the slide to create an “Any questions?” slide and use the placeholder text to add your own questions that’ll help spark the conversation.

Slide design #23 has a Q&A design.

These question slides could also contain follow-up information. If you’re going to send your presentation (instead of presenting it from an audience) you can use a questions slide like this to add your follow-up contact details.

Slide #29 is another simple yet attractive slide.

Simply substitute the placeholder text for “Any questions?”

A Q&A slide should be something simple that doesn’t distract the audience. The audience’s attention should be on the Q&A session itself, and not the visuals in the background.

3. The “Contact Us” Slide

The “Contact Us” slide is a great choice for the final slide in sales presentations, fundraising pitches, and any type of presentation that opens up the opportunity for follow-up communications.

In the Clean theme, check out the PowerPoint slide design 25, titled “Stay in Touch with Us.” This presentation slide template is ready for you to add your social media links. This slide design is perfect if you’re telling the story of your business and asking the audience to follow you on social media.

Slide #25 is for contact details.

50+ Questions to Generate Audience Participation

50+ Questions to Generate Audience Participation

When it comes to presentations, one of the most important things you can do is get your audience engaged and participating. This can be a challenge, but with the right questions, it can be easy!

In this post, we will provide you with over 50 different questions you can use in your next presentation. These questions are broken down into different types, so you can easily find the ones that will work best for your needs, as well as slide deck recs for each type of question.

Introduction Questions

Using questions in an introduction to a meeting or presentation sets the tone for the rest of your time together. These questions can also give the speaker an idea of the expectations and wants of those in the audience.

While asking some of these questions to a group can quickly devolve into side conversations or serve as distractions, picking one or two of them and having the group answer on their phones can provide real insight. We suggest using the Meeting Kickoff slide deck to quickly ask the questions, get the audience participating, and set the tone for the rest of the meeting.

slide presentation question

1. Who here has ever been to a meeting where they were completely lost within the first five minutes?

2. How many of you have some knowledge about the topic we're discussing today?

3. What is something you're hoping to come away with after this presentation?

4. What are you tired of hearing about on this topic?

5. What motivates you most to learn about this topic?

6. What can I do to make this presentation valuable to you?

7. If you aren't here due to work obligations, would you still want to be here?

8. How do you prefer to consume information on this topic?

9. Do you prefer presentations/meetings in-person or virtually?

10. What would help you focus for the rest of this presentation?

Word Cloud Questions

Another fantastic way to gauge what your audience feels or thinks about certain topics (while keeping them engaged and entertained) is through the use of word clouds. Unlike open-ended questions, word clouds allow an audience to answer a prompt and give a visual representation to the group on which answer is the most prevalent.

Word clouds are an excellent way to draw a group back in mid-meeting and gauge the mindset of your audience. Slides with Friends has a fantastic Word Cloud Game you can put together in a few moments to boost the participation in your next presentation.

slide presentation question

1. How are you feeling right now?

2. Who has had the biggest influence on your life?

3. What person in our industry has had the biggest impact on your career?

4. What's something you're worried about professionally today?

5. What's something you're excited about professionally today?

6. What's one of the best ideas our company/group has come up with?

7. How would you describe our last month in one word?

Ice Breaker Questions

If you’re hosting a meeting with a smaller group that’s already comfortable with each other, meeting icebreakers can loosen tongues and generate conversation. These questions are also a bit more fun, perfect for easing into a heavier presentation.

Use our Meeting Icebreaker slide deck to start your meetings with a little bit of sharing and laughter. Setting the tone at the beginning of your meeting will keep the audience engaged throughout.

slide presentation question

1. What’s your favorite tradition or holiday?

2. What fictional world or place would you like to visit?

3. What is your favorite time of the day? Why?

4. What's one routine that has changed how you work?

5. What's something about the co-worker/person next to you that you appreciate?

6. What's your biggest non-work goal right now?

7. What's something you're willing to share that we don't know about you?

This or That Questions

With larger groups, it can be even more difficult to grab and keep everyone’s attention, much less get the group to participate. The key to using questions with larger audiences is to keep the answers simple and easy to share.

One of our favorite ways of keeping an audience engaged with questions is with this or that questions. Or, as we call them at Slides with Friends, tea vs coffee questions. Our slide deck Tea vs Coffee was created to make engaging with big groups easier, but still fun.

slide presentation question

1. Coffee or tea?

2. Hot or cold climate?

3. Pager or fax machine?

4. Train or plane?

5. Staycation or vacation?

6. Netflix or Amazon Prime?

7. Mountains or beach?

8. Macs or PCs?

9. Beer or wine?

10. Work from home or in the office?

Discussion Questions

Sometimes to generate audience participation, you need to let them do the talking. This is the concept that inspired the discussion questions we’ve put together. What are things people want to talk about while still staying on topic? What can you ask to get the group involved and engaged without derailing the purpose of the gathering?

With the Brainstorming Session Template slide deck, you can present your questions to the group and either have them answer aloud or through their phones. The key here is taking a step back and letting them lead the conversation.

slide presentation question

1. What is the best advice you've ever gotten about your career?

2. What was your first job? How has it influenced your career now?

3. How have you seen your industry change in the past 10 years?

4. What is your favorite thing about your job?

5. What is the hardest thing about your job?

6. What are some of the biggest challenges you see in your industry right now?

7. What's one thing you wish was more efficient about your job?

8. What small change can we make today that will shift how we work long-term?

Exit Questions

We’d all love to think every single one of our presentations was a slam dunk, but we know that’s not true. One way to finish up strong and with appreciated audience participation is to ask how you did.

Use the questions below in our Project Wrap Up slide deck to find out how you did and what you can change for the next time you meet. The best way to improve audience participation is to give the group what they want. These questions will help you figure out what that ‘want’ is.

slide presentation question

1. What was your favorite part of the presentation?

2. What are you going to do with what you learned today?

3. Who is going to help you implement what you learned today?

4. When are you going to start using what you learned today?

5. What's your plan for continuing to learn about this topic?

6. How would you rate the overall quality of the presentation?

7. What could we have done better?

8. Was the pace too fast, too slow, or just right?

9. Did you feel like you learned something new?

Silly Questions

And finally, just for the fun of it, here are a few of our favorite silly questions to ask the crew at your next Happy Hour Hang . Sure, these questions might devolve into laughter, but that still counts as participation!

slide presentation question

1. How would you describe your job to a preschooler?

2. What would your entrance song be if you were coming out on stage?

3. What place in time do you think you'd fit in the most?

4. What do you think is the most overrated show or movie right now?

5. What fictional team (X-Men, Avengers, Justice League) is the best?

The Any Questions slide is a vital element of a well-rounded presentation. This slide typically appears towards the end of the presentation and signals that the presenter has finished presenting their main points. It often incorporates graphics and images to engage the audience.

The benefits of using an Any Questions slide are numerous. It allows the presenter to address any confusion or misunderstandings the audience may have about the content. Additionally, it allows the presenter to demonstrate their expertise and knowledge on the topic, which can further establish their credibility with the audience.

Our Any Questions slides are compatible with various software, including Microsoft PowerPoint, Office 365, Keynotes, and Google Slides, for any Windows or Mac computer.

What is a Question Slide?

A question slide is a one-page part of your presentation that you can use to encourage your audience to ask questions. Its purpose is to facilitate an interactive and engaging session by providing a dedicated space for the audience to ask any questions they may have about the content you presented.

It is usually placed toward the end of a presentation after you have shared your main ideas or key information. It prompts the audience to reflect on the material and think of any uncertainties, clarifications, or additional insights they would like to seek.

How do you ask if there are Any Questions in a presentation?

To ask if there are any questions in a presentation, you can say something like “Does anyone have any questions?” or “I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.” It’s important to give the audience enough time to think and formulate questions, so try to pause for a few seconds after asking the question to give them time to respond.

How do you present a Q&A Slide?

When presenting a Q&A slide, you can use a simple slide with a heading such as “Q&A” or “Questions and Answers,” followed by a blank space where you can display the questions the audience asks. Depending on the format of your presentation, you may choose to display the Q&A slide at the end of the presentation, or you may pause the presentation and switch to the Q&A slide to address any questions that arise during the presentation. It’s important to be prepared to answer a variety of questions.

What is the purpose of a Question Slide in a presentation?

The purpose of a question slide in a presentation is to foster interaction and engagement with the audience. Here are some key purposes for including a question slide:

  • It encourages participation among your audience.
  • It allows your audience to voice their uncertainties and seek clarifications.
  • It helps your audience to delve deeper into the topics you covered.
  • It helps tailor your discussion and provides you with valuable feedback.
  • It promotes engagement and interaction.
  • It helps you build a rapport between you and your audience.

When should I display the Question Slide?

The question slide is displayed toward the end of a presentation after you present all the key points. It allows your audience to reflect on the content and think of any questions they may have.

How To Make an interactive Quiz in PowerPoint - Tutorial

09.24.20   •  #powerpoint #quiz #game.

You would like to learn how to create a quiz in PowerPoint? Amazing, because there's nothing that engages an audience the way, a little interactive game of trivia does (even though there are not only trivia quizzes - you could use the techniques shown here to create a personality quiz as well)! And the best thing is that designing a quiz is not difficult at all with a little help from an integrated PowerPoint Add-In like SlideLizard.

speaker conducting a quiz during a presentation

SlideLizard - The easiest way to conduct a Quiz

First of all, let's clarify that there are several different methods of how to create and conduct a quiz in PowerPoint. If you've looked around on the Internet already, you might have found some complicated guides on how to program objects and slides depending on what answer you click on. Or you've landed on a tutorial that just tells you to make one slide with the question + possible answers, and a following slide with the correct answer. While the first option is overly complicated (our method saves you a lot of time!), the second option has no interactive features at all (where's the fun in that?). This is where SlideLizard comes in with its many benefits:

  • Fast quiz creation : You just type in your questions with answer options, tick the right one and the questions are automatically inserted to your slides
  • Voting via smartphone: Your attendees simply log in to your presentation (works in any browser!) on a mobile device. Then they are able to vote for one of the answer options you set with just one click.
  • Quiz Results: Your attendees can immediately see if their answer was right or wrong. The results are counted up right away and you can see the percentage of people who voted for each one of the answers (of course you can show the results to your audience as well)
  • Seamless integration in PowerPoint: Once you downloaded SlideLizard, it will show up as a new tab in PowerPoint. That means you have the same user interface as always, making it super easy and intuitive to use.
  • SlideLizard can be downloaded for free ! Click here to get it right now.

Furthermore, SlideLizard allows you to...

  • Use images or emojis in your quiz
  • Set a time limit for each question
  • Export your data (e.g. Quiz results)
  • Have a custom branding

Tutorial: Link your Quiz to SlideLizard

Here are two ways of how to link your quiz with SlideLizard. In the first option, you'll learn how to do so with the pre-set SlideLizard design. In the second version, you'll learn how to make a quiz using one of our 10 quiz design templates.

a) Use the pre-set / no template

If you haven't done already, download SlideLizard here

Open your presentation in PowerPoint. Click on the SlideLizard- Tab and then Link to SlideLizard .

link your presentation to SlideLizard

If you need any help with linking your presentation to SlideLizard, please follow the steps in this tutorial .

Go to Polls & Quizzes . You'll find that option when you're linking your presentation to SlideLizard for the first time, but you can always reopen the window to adapt, add and remove questions. To do so, click Polls & Quizzes in the SlideLizard tab.

go to polls and quizzes

When creating questions, it's always important to choose either Single Choice Quiz (if your attendees should only be able to vote for one correct answer) or Multiple Choice Quiz (if your attendees should be able to vote for more than one correct answer).

choose single or multiple choice quiz

Type in your question and the different answer options. By checking the box beside an answer, it gets marked as correct. You can mark one or more answers as correct and also add pictures or emojis to the answers. By clicking the "+"- symbol, more answers get added. If you want to, you can set a timer.

make a poll question

Click Save & Close . Go to the slide after which you want your quiz to start. In the SlideLizard tab, click Insert Poll Slide . A poll and an answer slide will automatically be added in.

create a question and answer slide for your poll

Under Poll in the SL tab, select the question you want to ask. It is now directly inserted on the slide, and the following answer slide should also show a placeholder for the results of this exact question.

choose which action and poll to conduct

Repeat steps 7 and 8 for all the questions you created. Save your presentation and you're done.

b) Use one of our templates

In our PowerPoint Quiz Templates blog article, you'll find 10 different question layout templates. You can download and use them for free! Linking your question to the slides works very similar to the way mentioned before. You'll find a detailed guide in the video tutorial or in the text down below. Here's the selection of quiz designs we offer:

selection of our quiz templates

Follow steps 1- 5 from Tutorial a)

Download your desired template from this blogpost: Free Quiz Templates

Copy the question and answer slides from your desired template and paste them where you want your quiz to start. In the Slide overview of your presentation (= where you want the quiz slides to be), right- click again and choose Keep Source Formatting under Paste Option .

Go to the question slide. In the SL-tab, select Conduct Poll under Action and select your desired quiz question under Poll .

Top 11 PowerPoint Templates to Facilitate Question and Answer Sessions [Free PDF Attached]

Top 11 PowerPoint Templates to Facilitate Question and Answer Sessions [Free PDF Attached]

Naveen Kumar

author-user

"If you are not asking questions, then either you know everything or you know nothing," each one of us might have heard this phrase at least once in our life if not more.

Therefore, asking questions is an important part of the learning curve. It helps you communicate, clear doubts, enhance your knowledge and focus your thinking. Asking questions also provide a breakthrough with new ideas and solutions to your problems. Besides, it's always better to ask rather than get confused by assuming things. Isn’t it?

However, it is integral to ask the right type of question 'how,' 'who,' 'what,' 'when,' or 'why' that dominates whether you will get apt answers or not. Also, follow the correct order of questions and spend some time shaping it for the right answers.

Pro Tip: Always ask open-ended questions to get a better response and understanding.

Answering a question

There are a few things you need to take care of while answering a question.

Process the question clearly to understand the context. Take time to format your answer in the exact manner in which the question is asked. For example, if a question follows the order—what>how>when>where, the answer should be in the same order.

Mind the tone while answering the question. Some questions might feel long, complicated, and repetitive. So handle them with patience. On the contrary, some questions might sound easy (more silly), so don’t sound arrogant while answering them.

Acknowledge the emotions of the seeker and don't forget to rephrase it to make it more comprehensive. . Try phrases like 'excellent question,' 'thanks for asking,' etc, to build an emotional connect.

Don't beat around the bush or avoid the question if you don't know or are not confident about the answer. Learn about the question asked, study it, and then answer it to avoid any unnecessary confusion.

Be aware of your body language while answering a question, as it will reflect in the answer. To sound confident, sit upright or stand straight. While standing, use your hands as much as possible.

So now you understand why asking and answering the questions are important. The right question increases the focus and thinking capacity, and the correct answer will help boost your confidence, morale, and learning. Therefore a win-win situation at all costs!

We, therefore, offer our expertly designed templates to put forward your questions and answers in a visually appealing manner. These are not only editable templates but can be used in multiple places to make you stand out from the crowd.

7+ Useful Questions & Answers PowerPoint Templates & Slides for Presentations

Last updated on November 14th, 2023

The climax of many presentations is not always the conclusion slide. Often, it’s the Q&A session that follows. This is where the rubber meets the road; where audiences gauge the depth of a presenter’s expertise and presenters solidify their messages. An effective Q&A slide sets the stage for this crucial interaction.

Questions & Answers PowerPoint Templates & Slides for Presentations

Questions & Answers slides (sometimes just Q&A slides) are commonly used in PowerPoint presentations for many purposes. For example, when you finish a PowerPoint presentation, some presenters prefer to ask questions to the audience and answer any questions. However, some other more interactive presentations may accept interruption from the audience or panel and ask questions. You can be prepared and impress your audience with some nice questions & answers in PowerPoint templates.

The Psychology Behind Q&A Sessions

A well-conducted Q&A does more than just address audience queries. It:

  • Engages and involves the audience, making them feel part of the presentation.
  • Validates the presenter’s expertise, building trust and credibility.
  • Clarifies potential misunderstandings, ensuring the core message is understood.

Design Principles for an Effective Q&A Slide for Questions & Answer Sessions

Remember, your slide sets the tone for the Q&A session. Here are some design priciples for an effective Q&A slide:

  • Simplicity: Less is more. A clutter-free slide avoids distraction.
  • Clear Typography: Fonts should be easy to read from every corner of the room.
  • Consistent Theme: The design should be in harmony with the rest of your presentation.
  • Visual Appeal: A symbolic image, like a question mark, can drive home the purpose of the slide.
  • Guidance: Instructions, like “Please wait for the microphone”, manage audience expectations.

Below, we present some well-designed Q&A slide templates for PowerPoint presentations that you can use for preparing en effective Q&A session.

In addition to the introduction, body, and conclusion, your presentation should include time for answering questions from the audience. While you should interact with the audience as you speak, there will be a separate time frame for answering the questions, depending on the purpose of your speech.

In addition, if the audience is small and familiar enough, you can allow them to ask questions during the presentation. However, it is best if you set aside a separate time for questions. This will help you better control your presentation and avoid jumping from topic to topic. Interrupting the flow of arguments will ruin the overall experience and risk losing control of the situation. So it is best to ask the audience to postpone their questions until the end of the presentation.

When preparing for this part of the speech, you must try to predict possible questions, try to give answers to them, so that the question does not catch you by surprise and does not throw you into long thinking.

Use of visual methods and materials. Visuals help both the presenter and the audience remember the main points of the talk. Most formal speeches and presentations involve the use of visual aids.

To make the audience feel like full participants in the presentation, invite them to send questions during the presentation, and then choose the most interesting ones by voting of the audience.

They appeal to both professional speakers because they help convince the audience of their point of view and help them remember the main points, and to beginners, because they distract the attention of the audience from the speaker’s figure.

The slides from this template can be used by business leaders in preparation for a strategic shareholder session. You can finish your presentation using one slide template. You can also use this template when preparing a presentation for an international conference.

Salespeople can also use the slides in this template when preparing product information for potential customers for the company. You can end your presentation by asking questions about a product or service.

Business trainers and university professors can also use this template when preparing their courses and trainings. Also, this template can be used when preparing for a quiz between employees of your company.

Occupational safety and health managers or HR managers can use the slides from this template when preparing materials for internal training. For example, you can use the slides in this template when explaining company policy or complex equipment requirements.

Any Questions Slide is a professional and modern template that contains four stylish and fully editable slides. If necessary, you can change all the elements of the slide in accordance with your corporate requirements. This template will be useful for startups, company executives, business coaches. Any Questions Slide template will organically complement your presentations and will be a great addition to your collection of professional presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can i get better results with the ai presentations maker.

Like any AI generator from a text tool, the prompt is everything. To get better results with the AI Presentation maker, you need better prompts. Write the prompt to be as detailed as possible. Include all the content topics you want the presentation to cover. As for style elements, there’s no need to include it in the prompt. Focus on choosing the style that you like from the Chatbot suggestions. Try to select the style that already features the color palette and shapes that you like. AI will change icons and photos based on text it generates.

How many AI Presentations can I generate?

slide presentation question

Advance Access to Presentation Slides Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.

Why is advance access to presentation slides provided as a disability-related accommodation?

Academic accommodations are provided to ensure all students have equal access to educational activities. Advance access to slides is an accommodation provided to students with a variety of disabilities that impact their ability to process or track the lecture content in real time and/or take effective notes at the same time. For disabled students who use the slides as an outline, they can focus their notetaking on adding on supplemental information from the lectures in order to most successfully engage in classroom learning while also documenting important additional points. It helps limit disability-related impacts that could result from needing to copy down everything that is on the slides, as they already have them as a guide and outline.

What information and training do students received about the advance access to presentation slides accommodation?

The McBurney Center provides training to students who are approved for this accommodation. Students are encouraged to share with instructors when (how far in advance) they need the slides for access based on their disability-related impact. The McBurney Center recognizes that there is a difference between sharing slides 30 minutes before class and 1 day before class. For students who require more time for access, we communicate that they may get a working draft of the slide content. McBurney Center staff also advises students to work with their instructors on how the slides will be shared (e.g., Canvas, Box, email, etc.).

What is UW’s policy regarding advance access to presentation slides?

Because students have gone through the interactive process with the McBurney Center, we are required to follow through on this responsibility for any student who is approved for this specific accommodation (the same as we would for other accommodations like small group testing, preferential seating during class, etc.). Policy UW-855 states that Faculty and/or Instructors are “responsible for timely implementation of accommodations,” and if they “are uncertain about or disagree with an accommodation or believe an accommodation poses an undue burden to the university must consult with the McBurney Disability Resource Center.”

As an instructor, can I deny this accommodation?

Only in rare cases, such as the following examples, where we would not be required to provide an approved accommodation:

  • It would fundamentally alter the course – if an instructor thinks that sharing slides would fundamentally alter their course, they should consult with the student’s Access Consultant.
  • If an instructor does not use slides and/or any other presentation materials.

What are some ideas for how to effectively provide this accommodation?

Instructors can consider the following strategies to provide slides in advance of class:

  • Sharing slides before class via Canvas with all students, not just students approved for this accommodation, is best practice.
  • Create a shared folder (e.g., Box, Google Drive, etc.) and use it as a place to house slides. Using this strategy, so long as all slide decks are developed in and/or added to the folder before each class, instructors only need to share the link to the folder one time at the start of the semester. Students will be able to access them without any additional steps or “sharing” from the instructor. It will then be the student’s responsibility to save the link to the folder and simply open it to have access to the slides in advance of class.
  • Email slides to students individually before each class session.
  • Utilize Canvas to share slides with students, even if choosing to limit which students they are shared with.
  • Reach out to McBurney Center staff for additional consultation or brainstorming, if needed.

What if I have concerns about copyright or my intellectual property?

Neither copyright nor intellectual property concerns outweigh the university’s obligation to provide reasonable accommodations. As employees of the university, we must abide by federal law and provide reasonable accommodations to disabled individuals. If an instructor believes that students are sharing or using the materials beyond the scope of why they were initially provided (the individual student’s education), students may be referred to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards for possible violation of ‘UWS 17.09(11) Refusal to comply regarding a university matter’ and/or ‘UWS 17.09(15) Violation of University Rules.’

What if I have a guest speaker or lecturer who is using slides and I don’t have permission to share their materials?

Sharing the materials with students who have this accommodation would fall under the Fair Use Doctrine . Even if the material is copyrighted, it is being used for non-commercial, educational purposes. We encourage instructors to share the need for advanced access with any guest speakers or lecturers and request that all presentation slides are provided to them before they present.

What if I notice a student approved for this accommodation is missing a significant number of class sessions and worry that they are using it as a substitution for attendance?

This accommodation is not a replacement for attendance. It is meant to provide access while in class. If you notice a student approved for this accommodation missing a significant number of classes, please check in with the student and/or their Access Consultant.
