The Presentation of the King

Matthew 21:1-11

After our long study of the book of Mark, we now finally come to our examination of the final week of the life of Jesus Christ. Throughout our study we have seen Matthew demonstrate over and over again that Jesus is the promised Messiah. Over and over again Matthew points out all the prophecies that He fulfilled. His genealogy tracing back to David, being born of a virgin, being born in Bethlehem, going to Egypt and then to Nazareth. Being confirmed by the Father and the Holy Spirit at His baptism and His later transfiguration. He had the correct message and proved His deity over and over again by demonstrating complete power over all disease, sickness and other physical afflictions, including death. He had absolute authority over both the natural and supernatural. He even had authority to forgive sins. Jesus fulfilled all of the Mosaic Law and taught with authority the meaning of that Law. Now we will find more evidence, some of it astonishing, that Jesus is the Messiah.

THE KING’S APPROACH (VS. 1)

Jesus has had his face set toward Jerusalem for some time now, and He knows that when He does arrive there He will suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priest, and scribes who will finally condemn Him to death. He will then be turned over to the Romans who will afflict Him, humiliate Him, and then crucify Him. But Jesus also knew that on the third day He would be raised from the dead.

Matthew does not tell us about all the events that occurred after healing the two blind men at Jericho. We learn more from the other gospel accounts. Luke 19 adds that Jesus had not just passed through Jericho, but had spent a day there with Zaccheus. This chief tax-collector, though small in height, captured Jesus attention, resulting in his repentance and salvation. Jesus left Jericho the next day, and John 12:1 tells us that Jesus spent the Sabbath (Saturday) with His friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus in the village of Bethany, just east of Jerusalem. That evening Jesus and the disciples ate at the home of Simon the leper. This was the same evening that Mary anointed Jesus feet with costly perfume, being another reminder of His impending death and burial (John 12:2-11).

The next day, which would be Sunday, we find that a great multitude of Jews had found out that Jesus was in Bethany and had come to see not just Him, but also that they might also see Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead not all that long before. The Chief priests and Pharisees had previously given orders that if anyone saw Jesus they should report it to them because they wanted to seize Jesus. Now, with all the interest in Lazarus, they begin to plot on how to put him to death as well (John 11:57; 12:10).

According to John’s (12:12) account Jesus enters Jerusalem on the next day, or the second day after Sabbath which is our Monday. We will see some more evidence for this being Monday later in our study today. But this is where we pick up Matthew’s account. And when they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you…”

The road from Bethany approaches Jerusalem from the east. They had now come to a place called, “Bethphage”, meaning “House of unripe figs.” This hamlet does not exist today, nor is there any evidence for where it existed except incidental accounts in stories where it is mentioned. From what we know from the gospel accounts, it was located between Bethany and Jerusalem on the eastern side of the Mount of Olives. As Jesus comes to this little village He knows that Jerusalem would be the next point He would reach, He now must make sure that He entrance into Jerusalem is done properly. As part of His preparation to enter Jerusalem, Jesus sends two of His disciples into that village to do an important errand for Him.

THE KING’S PREPARATION (VS. 2-7)

His instructions to them are in verse 2. “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them, and bring them to Me. And if anyone says something to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them, and immediately he will send them.'”

It is possible that Jesus had made arrangements to get the donkey and its foal previously, possibly with one of the people that had come to see Him in Bethany the day before. It is also just as possible that this is Jesus’ omniscience being displayed once again. In either case, the emphasis is not on Him getting the two animals, but on why He did so. Jesus would not enter Jerusalem as just a pilgrim or just a rabbi as He had done in past. Jesus would this time enter into Jerusalem in a manner that would declare to all who He was.

Notice that in the instructions to the disciples that Jesus refers to Himself in a different manner than He has before. Many people referred to Him as Lord. Some out of simple respect, and some out of some sense of understanding that He might be the Messiah, and therefore God in human flesh. But Jesus did not refer to Himself in quite this manner before. If Jesus’ instructions to the disciples would have followed the normal mode making a reference to Himself, He would have told the disciples something like this, “If anyone says something to you, you tell them that I have need of them.” We still speak the same way today generally referring to ourselves as “I.” But here Jesus tells them to specifically say, “ The Lord has need of them.” Jesus wanted to make sure that they used His proper title. The Lord, the one who is ruler over all, the master, has need of these two animals. There response was not to be a request in hopes that the owners of the animals would grant it, it was a statement of fact that the owners of the animals needed to submit too.

We should keep that in mind in our own lives. Jesus does not need to request us, plead with us, or beg us to obey Him. And we gain no merit by agreeing to abide by His commands. All Jesus needs to do is state what He wants from us and it is our obligation to obey. We are under compulsion to submit to all that He says simply because of His position. He is Lord.

Verse 6 tells that the disciples did exactly what Jesus told them to do. The account in Luke tells us that the owners did indeed stop them and ask them what they were doing, and the disciples responded just as Jesus told them and the owners immediately consented.

In Verses 4 & 5 Matthew tells us exactly why Jesus needed the donkey and its foal.

Prophecies Fulfilled (4-7)

Now this took place that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your king is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.'”

This prophecy occurs in Zechariah 9:9. The “daughter of Zion” is a reference to Jerusalem, often called Zion because that is the name of the city’s highest and most important hill, Mount Zion. There were many prophecies concerning the Messiah and this one noted the manner that He would come as king. Jesus would ride into Jerusalem in a humble manner, on the colt of a donkey. This was not the manner expected either. A conquering king would come riding on a war stead or at least a carefully groomed white stallion, and that will be the manner of Jesus’ return. Rev. 19 tells us that Jesus will return on a white horse riding at the head of armies of heaven. But for this entrance into Jerusalem, Jesus did not come as the leader of a victorious army, but as a humble servant who was yet the king.

I like what of my commentaries said about this. “He who makes his entry unarmed with unarmed followers on a peaceful animal must either be already acknowledged as ruler, or he must aim at dominion in such a manner as excludes all force and political power.” That certainly fits Jesus. He was already ruler, though not acknowledged as such, and the manner by which He would gain dominion would not be by force of arms or by political power. Jesus came not in wealth, but poverty; not in grandeur, but modesty; not as judge, but as savior. As the passover lamb.

This is another reason that I believe that Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem occurred not on Sunday, but on Monday. Jesus was to be the perfect “passover” sacrifice. The Mosaic Law required that the sacrificial lamb for Passover be selected on the tenth day of the first month (Nisan) and then sacrificed on the 14th of that month. In the year that Jesus was crucified the 14th of the month was on a Friday. The 10th of the month would have been that Monday. If Jesus has come into Jerusalem on that Monday, then He would have been fulfilling the symbolism of Passover to the smallest detail, being received by the Jewish nation on the 10th of Nisan. This was the same way each Jewish family was receiving into their home the sacrificial lamb. Jesus was coming into Jerusalem as the “lamb of God who would takes away the sins of the world.” He was the perfect Passover sacrifice.

But there is another reason for believing this occurred on Monday, the 10th of Nisan. Matthew does not mention this prophecy here, but Daniel had prophesied when Messiah the Prince would be declared. Daniel 9:25 says, “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.” The next verses tells us that after the sixty-two weeks, the Messiah would be cut off.

The weeks referred to were weeks of years, or a total of 7 + 62 = 69 weeks of years, or 69 X 7 = 483 years. So 483 years after the beginning of this prophecy would be the arrival of the Messiah. This can be worked out to the number of days. We have 365 days/year in our calendar, but the calendar Daniel used only had 360 days/year.

483 years X 360 days/year = 173,880 days.

Nehemiah 2:1-8 records the beginning of the prophecy when on Nisan 1 of King Artaxerxes 20th year (March 5, 44 B.C.) he decreed that Nehemiah could return to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. The prophecy was fulfilled 173,880 days later which works out to be Nisan 10 (Monday, March 30), A.D. 33. Jesus fulfilled the prophecy to the very day.

The disciples obeyed Jesus and did what He asked. The owners of the donkey and its colt submitted to Jesus authority. Verse 7 of our text tells us that the disciples brought “the donkey and the colt, and laid on them their garments, on which He sat.” In doing all this the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 and of Daniel 9:25 would be fulfilled. None of this was by chance, but orchestrated precisely by the sovereign God.

I might add a footnote here in keeping what I said about the critics of the Bible last week. Here we again find that Matthew’s account differs from Mark and Luke’s. (See: Sight for the Blind ) They only mention the colt where Matthew mentions both the colt and its mother. Critics have charged that this proves Matthew was wrong. It always amazes me that they attack Matthew, who was present. He knew how many animals were there. Mark and Luke do not exclude their being two animals, they just only mention one. And it only makes sense that the colt’s mother would be present and it also for them to take it along to keep the colt calm, because as Mark and Luke both mention, this animal had never been ridden before.

The disciples have returned from their errand with the two animals. They then take their coats off and lay them on the colt and Jesus mounts it and they continue on their way to Jerusalem.

THE KING’S RECEPTION (VS. 8,9)

Jesus’ reception as king is immediate. The crowds already gathered see the disciples lay their coats on the donkey, and they begin to respond in like manner. Verse 8,9 And most of the multitude spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees, and spreading them in the road. And the multitudes going before Him and those who followed after were crying out, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes it the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”

Remember that large crowds would gather to Jerusalem for Passover. Estimates based on the number of sacrifices recorded project that there could easily have been two million people in the area on Passover. While there are not that many yet, there are a lot. John’s account indicates at least three sources for the large crowd that had gathered around Jesus. First, there was a multitude of people that had come to Jerusalem for the feast. Many of them were from Galilee and they went out to meet Jesus when they heard that He was coming (Jn 12:12). Another crowd was made up of people from Bethany and friends of Lazarus and his family, these were people who had been present when Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead (Jn 12:17). Another large gathering of people were coming out from Jerusalem to meet Jesus because they had heard about him raising Lazarus from the dead (Jn 12:18). Imagine for just a moment the commotion all of this would have caused. Jerusalem is in quite a state of excitement already just because of the preparations being made for Passover, then you hear and then see this huge crowd of people coming over the Mt. of Olives and down the road through the valley to enter Jerusalem through the East gate. The people are cutting down the palm branches and putting their coats down in front of Jesus as a sign of honor. At the same time everyone is shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes it the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” What a sight, what a wonderful time that would have been to have been present.

What the people were shouting was fitting to the occasion and in fact fulfillment of prophecy as well. Most of what they were saying was taken from Psalm 118 which is part of the Hallel, Psalms 113-118, which were psalms of praise for the Lord’s deliverance, and were often sung at Passover. In addition, “Hosanna” is an exclamatory word meaning, “save now,” or “give thy salvation!” And as I pointed out last week, the phrase, “Son of David,” is a direct reference to Jesus being the Messiah. What they were shouting out was exactly what was being done for them. Salvation was coming from the Messiah. Jesus was coming as Lord. The one who was from the highest heaven was bringing to them salvation.

Did the people understand all that they were saying? Sadly, they did not. They were still looking for a king who would save them from Roman oppression, not someone who would bring them salvation from sin’s oppression. What they were shouting was true, but they neither understood it or believed it.

In the midst of this huge crowd of people all shouting “Hosanna, Son of David,”, Jesus looked down on Jerusalem from the top of the Mount of Olives and Luke tells that He wept because of the unbelief of the people saying, If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. For the days shall come upon you when your enemies will throw up a bank before you, and surround you, and hem you in on every side, and will level you to the ground and your children with you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.

Verses 10 and 11 show us that though they were proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, the one who would save them, they did not really believe what they were proclaiming.

WHO IS THE KING? (VS. 10,11)

And when He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” And the multitudes were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

The city certainly must have been stirred by the procession that accompanied Jesus into Jerusalem. What an opportunity for those that knew something about Jesus to tell those who were asking! Remember that most of those in the crowd praising Jesus and shouting, “Hosanna,” were either from Galilee where Jesus had done the majority of His miracles, or they were the ones present when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. They had seen so much evidence demonstrating who Jesus was, they had heard Him teach in a way no mere man could teach, they had only minutes before been shouting before Him, “Hosanna, Son of David.” Yet, instead of boldly proclaiming Him the Son of David, the Messiah, the promised one, it simply became, “the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.” Jesus was a prophet, but He was so much more than that, and they failed to recognize it.

The king was there. The prophecies were fulfilled. Messiah had come and they had even shouted that out themselves, yet they still failed to discern who He was.

There is not much different today. People say all sorts of things about Jesus, true things, but they do not really believe it.

Some call Jesus a great teacher or philosopher, yet they do not study what He taught nor follow His teachings or philosophy. He was a great example, but they do not follow it. To speak of Jesus in a positive way is still popular in our culture, especially at Christmas time. How many of the wonderful Christmas carols are sung for personal profit by secular musicians who do not know Him?

How many people claim Jesus as their savior, yet they are still busy striving to save themselves through what ever means by which they think they can earn it. Their piety and good works are not done out of a response of love for what Jesus has done for them, but out of heart still burden and trying to earn God’s favor. We can not earn His favor, it comes by His grace Titus 3:5,6 – “Not by works which we have done, but according to His mercy, He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, Which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”

Other people claim to love Jesus, yet they refuse to give up their sin and follow Him. In truth they are liars because Jesus Himself said, “ He that has my commandments and keeps them, he is the one that loves me,” and also, “ If anyone will love me he will keep my word… he that loves Me not does not keep my words.”

There are others that may even really believe Jesus is who He claims to be, but out of fear, they will not tell others that. I am sure there were those in the crowd that did think Jesus was the Messiah, but we’re afraid to say so for fear of the chief priests, scribes and Pharisees. Do not let that fear control you, if you do, it says a lot about what your really do believe, namely that Jesus is not worthy of your being possibly persecuted and ridiculed. A stern warning for you comes from Matt. 10:33 where Jesus says, whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before my which is in heaven.

Don’t be like the fickle crowd that surrounded Jesus that day, proclaiming one thing but not acting in accordance with what you say. If you know Jesus, then boldly proclaim Him to everyone. If you do not know Him, recognize that and find out who He really is. If you have questions about Jesus, that is a major reason this church exists. Come and ask me or any of our church leaders. We are here to help you understand the truth of God’s Word.

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Lectionary: 524

Thus says the Lord GOD: Lo, I am sending my messenger     to prepare the way before me; And suddenly there will come to the temple     the LORD whom you seek, And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.     Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who will endure the day of his coming?     And who can stand when he appears? For he is like the refiner’s fire,     or like the fuller’s lye. He will sit refining and purifying silver,     and he will purify the sons of Levi, Refining them like gold or like silver     that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD. Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem     will please the LORD,     as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Responsorial Psalm

R.    (8) Who is this king of glory?  It is the Lord! Lift up, O gates, your lintels;     reach up, you ancient portals,     that the king of glory may come in! R.    Who is this king of glory?  It is the Lord! Who is this king of glory?     The LORD, strong and mighty,     the LORD, mighty in battle. R.    Who is this king of glory?  It is the Lord! Lift up, O gates, your lintels;     reach up, you ancient portals,     that the king of glory may come in! R.    Who is this king of glory?  It is the Lord! Who is this king of glory?     The LORD of hosts; he is the king of glory. R.    Who is this king of glory?  It is the Lord!

Since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord , and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.  He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go          in peace, according to your word,     for my eyes have seen your salvation,         which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples:     a light for revelation to the Gentiles,         and glory for your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted -and you yourself a sword will pierce- so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.

For The King Review – PS4

John-Paul Jones / May 15, 2019

For The King PS4 Review

Effectively a board game made pixel, For The King bears a strong resemblance to the grossly underrated Armello – a title which aimed and largely succeeded in combining strategy, RPG and tabletop mechanics to compelling effect.

By embracing a blend of tabletop, adventure and rogue-like elements, For The King accomplishes the same feat; though somewhat unlike Armello, it presents a much more challenging experience by contrast.

For The King is a deep, engrossing tabletop experience

For The King begins largely how you might expect – the King is dead (Kings tend to be rarely anything else in videogames these days it seems) and the Queen has put a call to arms which a merry band of adventurers have answered in earnest. Though hardly earth shattering from a plot perspective, the story setup, as thin as it is, serves only as a functional backdrop to the methodically paced, tactical board game beats around which the rest of For The King revolves around.

For The King Review 01

With a choice of multiple classes in Blacksmith, Scholar, Hunter and Minstrel that each have their own gear, abilities, strengths and weaknesses, players are then able to get stuck straight into the main campaign called ‘For The King’ (yes, I know), or if they’re an experienced sort, any of the five additional expansion campaigns can also be tackled – though they do scale up in difficulty pretty savagely.

Once into the game itself, For The King takes in an elevated third-person perspective that showcases the game world at large – a colourful patchwork of interlinked hexagonal tiles that in turn give the impression that For The King’s world is in fact one great big board game. This is obviously deliberate because, well, that’s exactly what For The King strives to be.

As is befitting its board game inspirations, For The King is a turn-based affair where players move as many spaces around the board as they can (each class has a set amount of moves they can make), interact with key locations such as townships, fight monsters and much more besides. Also like a board game, For The King is governed by a strict set of rules that parametrise everything from movement and combat, through to loot, the economy and more besides, which means that once you’ve gotten the hang of it, game sessions trundle along quite nicely.

For The King Review 02

Speaking of combat, For The King acquits itself as you would expect. Combat is turn-based and each character in the party that happens to be present at the on the tile which is being attacked, gets a turn to attack the enemy, choosing from a wide range of abilities, items and attack types. Likewise, For The King has no shortage of different enemy types for you and your brave party to tangle with either – chucking all manner of goblins, orcs, bandits, sea creatures and more that all all have their own strengths, weaknesses, immunities and elemental affinities.

For The King can be monumentally challenging and unfair – and that is part of its charm

Something else that is true about For The King is just how difficult it is, and that difficulty is nowhere better exemplified than in the combat. Though approachably accessible and pleasantly deep, the combat in For The King sometimes falls unfairly victim to the RNG monster – as it is entirely possible to be fighting a foe of equivalent level and have your attacks miss consecutively. To say that this becomes aggravating in a game where a party wipe effectively means game over, would be quite the understatement.

Unfortunately, the gnarled, evil fingers of negative RNG stretch further than just the combat. At the beating heart of For The King is a randomised event system which acts as the lynchpin to many of its quests – the problem however, is that the equipment and gear that you need to progress through certain quests is not only rare to discover, but there is a time limit to discover it in the first place.

For The King Review 03

And this is the thing – For The King is, unabashedly, a true board game made pixel in every sense. This means that like the real thing, you are entirely at the mercy of the dice and while the deck isn’t always stacked against you, this is most certainly a game where a poor outcome is much more likely than a favorable one, and if you want to enjoy everything that For The King has to offer, you need to make peace with that.

Additionally, you can also make things quite difficult for yourself simply by not exercising much common sense. Moving around the game world for instance can prove perilous if you have split your group apart, while failing to take advantage of easier quests and the rewards that they offer, can also see your group set in poor stead for the increasingly difficult challenges to come. For The King then, does not forgive the tactically clumsy. At all.

For The King is bursting with content and is best played with friends

Despite For The King’s high difficulty and propensity for often frustrating flirtations with punishing RNG, it nonetheless remains a steadfastly, value-stuffed proposition as it includes all five expansions that were released for the game after its PC debut in April 2018. From the frigid wastes of the Frost Adventure expansion to the swashbuckling, sea-creature combat of the Into the Deep expansion, For The King certainly provides ample bang for your buck as each expansion provides new gear, monsters, quests and environments to get stuck into.

Like the humble board game from which it draws such clear inspiration, For The King is most certainly best when played with friends and with this in mind, some of the expansions deftly exploit this fact, boasting competitive multiplayer modes and a range of challenges that can only really be done with human friends that are either sat right next you, or situated in their own comfort zones across the world.

For The King Review 04

Then there is the audiovisual presentation of For The King. With a highly stylish and vivid flat-shaded visual veneer, For The King’s various landscapes and character models are lent a really solid kind of physical presence that echoes the likes of similarly styled games such as Human Fall Flat , for example. Then there is the soundtrack which though understated, is likeable enough fantasy fare that it neatly backs up the on-screen action with aplomb.

Akin to an evening spent sitting around a table with friends that is in turn generously crowded with snacks, boards, tiles and dice, For The King does a grand job of invoking the social experiences that boardgaming has provided for so long. Though frequently troubled by the RNG monster, For The King remains an offering that is best enjoyed with friends and that includes everything from your best successes to your worst failures. Methodical and stuffed with content, For The King represents something a little different from the norm – so give it a shot, eh?

For The King is out now on PS4.

Review code kindly supplied by publisher.

The Final Word

Though RNG issues can render it punishing and solo play is not hugely captivating, For The King nonetheless states a decent case for itself as a tactical, fantasy multiplayer board game that everybody can enjoy. Get the snacks in, get the friends in and away you go.

Selected highlights from this sermon

Even though it didn’t look very impressive by the world’s standards, Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem signaled a victory. In this message, Pastor Wiersbe walks us through what that triumphal entry meant to Jesus, to Israel, and to us today. Through His victory over death, Jesus made a way for all people to be reconciled to God and the only way for true peace to enter our lives.

Transcripts for Dr. Wiersbe's sermons are forthcoming. Below is an outline of his message.

We often call Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem His triumphal entry, but it really appears very ordinary.

Jesus rode on a donkey surrounded by peasants holding tree branches and spreading old clothes.

Even though this event didn’t look very impressive by the world’s standards, it was a triumph for Jesus.

In Jerusalem Jesus tore the veil in the temple, united Jews and Gentiles, and made a way for all people to be reconciled to God.

Jesus’ coming to Jerusalem was a victory for the whole world.

We can share in Jesus’ triumph and have peace in our lives.

Three meanings of the triumphal entry that help us share in the victory of Christ:

-       Obedience: What the triumphal entry meant to Jesus.

  • The triumphal entry meant Jesus was going to obey and fulfill the Word of God.
  • Wherever Jesus went and whatever He did He was obeying God.
  • Jesus was obeying three Scriptures in the triumphal entry: that He would come (Psalm 118:25-26), when He would come (Daniel 9:24-27), and how He would come (Zechariah 9:9).
  • By obeying Scripture, Jesus was signing His own death warrant.
  • How many of us are willing to obey when it means suffering and death?
  • Jesus obeyed the Word of God in spite of what it cost Him because the blessing on the other side was worth it.

-       Opportunity: What the triumphal entry meant to Israel.

  • Deuteronomy 20:10-12 commanded Israel to offer peace to their enemies before destroying them.
  • Jesus could have declared war on Jerusalem for their ungodliness, but instead He brought an opportunity for peace.
  • The only true peace which can be found is in heaven because of Jesus’ sacrifice.
  • God’s arms are reached out in love and peace toward the world.
  • The next time Jesus comes to face His enemies, He will be a conqueror bringing judgment.

-       Obligation: What the triumphal entry means to believers today.

  • We have an obligation to make Jesus king in our lives.
  • Today Jesus is seated on a throne in heaven—not buried in a grave or hanging on a cross.
  • Right now, it looks like Satan is king because evil is rampant on Earth, but Jesus is king wherever He is allowed to be king.
  • Jesus is a different kind of king: He rules through love and meekness.
  • Jesus rules over us through His Word, the Bible.
  • As we read and obey the Bible, we are reigning with Jesus.
  • When we disobey the Word of God, we remove Jesus from His spot as king of our lives. When Jesus is not king there is no peace, joy, or fulfillment.

Ask Jesus to be king in your life today.

Holding Inspirational Presentations Like Martin Luther King!

When it comes to captivating, inspirational presentations, one name is inescapable: Martin Luther King. He is considered an icon whose impressive oratory skills not only set historical changes in motion but also serve as a source of inspiration for modern presentation techniques.

In today’s article, we will show how you too can deliver similarly captivating presentations like Martin Luther King and apply his timeless techniques.

Who is Martin Luther King?

Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was an American civil rights activist and one of the most important leaders of the American civil rights movement. He gained worldwide fame for his nonviolent struggle against racial segregation and the discrimination of African Americans in the USA.

King delivered a series of iconic speeches, including his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. His rhetorical skills, commitment to social justice, and advocacy for nonviolent resistance have made him an inspirational figure. He remains today a symbol of change and hope.

Why King’s Speeches are Important for the World of Presentations

Martin Luther King’s presentation skills were particularly marked by his impressive ability to move people with his words and passion . His speeches were not merely off-the-cuff remarks but passionate calls for change from the depths of his heart.

King mastered the art of rhetoric and skillfully incorporated his convictions into his speeches. He pursued clear objectives. These words, filled with emotions and energy, captivated his audience and inspired it. Through the skillful use of metaphors, repetition, and similar elements , he could further reinforce and sustainably lend power to his messages. Additionally, he built an emotional connection with the audience.

His presentation skills are still a model for speakers and presenters worldwide, who learn from his ability to not only convey information but to touch hearts and instigate change .

7 Techniques to Present Like King

Presenting like Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King didn’t use supportive PowerPoint presentations for his speeches. Nevertheless, his timeless techniques can also be extremely effective when applied to modern PowerPoint presentations.

To give similarly captivating presentations, you can refer to the following eight techniques, successfully applied by King.

1. The Art of Storytelling

The power of stories is undeniable , including in presentations. Stories are captivating; they have the power to evoke emotions and create unforgettable images in the minds of the audience. Skillfully integrated into your presentation, they pave the way to your audience.

Martin Luther King strategically used stories to convey his messages. He cleverly connected his concerns with real stories of individuals, creating a personal and emotional connection with his audience.

These narratives conveyed not just information but also evoked empathy and compassion , making his messages even more powerful. He used stories as the foundation of his presentations . This turned Martin Luther King’s speeches into not just lectures, but vibrant experiences that deeply touched the audience. You too can skillfully employ this technique.

Read more about storytelling and storytelling techniques in our article “ Storytelling in Presentations .”

2. The Power of Rhetoric

When creating your presentation, don’t just focus on content delivery; also consider how you deliver it. Utilize rhetorical elements, as rhetoric transcends mere information sharing. It influences emotions and stimulates thought.

Martin Luther King was a master of rhetoric . He used techniques like anaphora—the repetition of words at the beginning of successive sentences—to amplify his compelling messages.

Parallelism, the uniformity in sentence structures, also helped him convey his ideas clearly and effectively. With metaphors and vivid language, he created strong mental images in the minds of the listeners, making it easier for them to understand complex topics.

Learn more about rhetoric and the skillful use of rhetorical elements in our article “ Speaking Techniques .”

3. Authenticity and Empathy

Emotions and authenticity play a significant role in your credibility when presenting. Martin Luther King shared not just facts but his own feelings, hopes, and dreams . This allowed the audience to identify with his message on a personal level and created credibility.

King’s great skill was in expressing his own emotions in his speeches while simultaneously reaching the emotions of his listeners. His empathy created an atmosphere of understanding and solidarity , allowing the audience to connect more deeply with the content of his presentations.

In your own presentations, also skillfully employ authenticity to better convey and convince with your messages.

4. Clarity and Structure

Martin Luther King masterfully demonstrated the use of clarity and structure. Clear and concise messages allow the audience to grasp the essence of the statements and remember them.

King used simple yet powerful language. His speeches were structured and organized, allowing the audience to easily follow his arguments. He recognized the potential of well-structured speeches and structured his speeches into clearly defined sections that built upon each other.

Adopt these two aspects and skillfully combine them. This will sustainably help in presenting your messages clearly and accessibly for everyone.

5. Visual Elements

Visual elements play a significant role in presentations. Not only the spoken word but also accompanying images, videos, etc. , contribute to a better understanding and the reinforcement of your content, making your presentation more varied.

Martin Luther King understood the power of visual metaphors to illustrate his ideas. He used images that were strong and symbolic to substantiate his statements. For instance, he employed the image of the “gilded chains of discrimination” to highlight the inhumanity of racial segregation. These visual elements helped the audience to grasp his messages not just intellectually but also emotionally.

Nowadays, you have the opportunity to project actual images in your presentations. Yet, even through visual metaphors, you can amplify your statements. Make sure to incorporate enough and appropriate visual elements to make your messages memorable.

In our blog, you will find numerous articles on how to visually enhance presentation elements. Feel free to browse around ► To the Blog .

6. Timing and Emphasis

Presenting like Martin Luther King

Timing and emphasis are crucial factors in presentations that are often overlooked. They significantly influence the impact of a message.

Martin Luther King deliberately controlled his speaking pace, pauses, and emphases to reinforce his statements. He used pauses to let significant thoughts linger and to encourage the audience to reflect. His emphases directed attention to key words and sentences , making his messages more compelling.

By skillfully combining timing and emphasis, King developed a rhythmic and captivating presentation style . This enabled him to emotionally engage his listeners and draw them into his message.

7. The Power of the Conclusion

A strong conclusion often holds the key to leaving a lasting impact on your audience . Therefore, don’t miss the opportunity to prepare an effective ending during your presentation preparation.

Martin Luther King used his closing sections to anchor his messages in the minds of the listeners. His closing words were often powerful, inspiring, and encouraging. He summarized his main points and highlighted the central message of his speech once again.

But not only that: King often left a call-to-action that motivated the audience to put the ideas conveyed in his presentation into practice. As a result, he was able to leave the audience with a sense of commitment and enthusiasm. His presentations thus became not just moments of listening but calls to action.

For tips on crafting the perfect presentation conclusion, refer to the article “ 20 Ideas for a Successful Presentation Ending .”

Learn how to incorporate a call-to-action at the end or within your presentations in the article “ Call-to-Action – How to Do It Right .”

Conclusion: Inspire Like Martin Luther King With Your Presentations

Captivate your audience with well-thought-out presentations. Apply King’s techniques in your next presentation to skillfully inspire your audience.

Simba is anointed as Mufasa's heir

Simba's presentation was the ceremony in which Simba was anointed as Mufasa's heir to the throne of Pride Rock and formally presented to the animals of the Pride Lands .

Information [ ]

Background [ ].

Simba was born to Mufasa and his mate, Sarabi . As such, Simba was expected to become the next king of the Pride Lands . Simba's birth was received poorly by Mufasa's younger brother, Scar , who would have been next in line for the throne were it not for Simba's birth. In honor of his son's birth, Mufasa summoned his subjects to Pride Rock for a viewing ceremony. [1]

The ceremony [ ]

Rafiki presents Simba to the Pride Landers.

One morning, the Pride Landers gathered below Pride Rock to watch the presentation of Simba. Zazu , Mufasa's majordomo , arrived and bowed before Mufasa, who overlooked the crowd. When all the guests had assembled, Rafiki , the Royal Mjuzi of the Pride Lands, made his way through the crowd and ascended Pride Rock, where he embraced Mufasa and met Simba. Rafiki smeared gourd juice and sprinkled sand on Simba's forehead, formally anointing him as Mufasa's heir. He then took Simba into his arms and held him up at the promontory of Pride Rock for all the Pride Landers to see. [1]

Meanwhile, Timon and Pumbaa approached Pride Rock in search of Timon's dream home. Pumbaa noticed Rafiki holding Simba, but Timon believed the event to be unimportant. The two began forcing their way through the crowd of animals in an attempt to reach a clearing on the other side. As they mingled with the Pride Landers, Pumbaa felt a wave of flatulence coming on. He tried to escape the crowd, but Timon forced him to remain.

Lionking3-disneyscreencaps

Pumbaa's inadvertent flatulence at Simba's presentation causes the animals in attendance to collapse.

Eventually, Pumbaa broke wind, which caused several animals around him and Timon to collapse unconscious. When the animals at the front saw this, they believed that the fallen animals were bowing and therefore mimicked them. From atop Pride Rock, Zazu commented to Mufasa that the Pride Landers were bowing before the "royal son." [2] Many Pride Landers also started cheering.

Despite the enormous turnout, Scar purposefully did not attend the ceremony, as he was angered at being replaced as the next in line to the throne. This did not escape Mufasa's notice, who shortly afterwards sent Zazu ahead to announce Mufasa's visit to his brother. [1]

At some point after the presentation occurred, a painting depicting the event was done in the innermost chambers of the Lair of the Lion Guard . [3]

Wings for the King By Anna Stroda Prepared by Judy Oschwald – 5th grade teacher

Genre: Play • A play is a story written to be acted out for an audience. As you read, imagine the actors speaking the lines and acting out the action.

Author’s Purpose • The author’s purpose is the reason or reasons an author has for writing. The purpose may change during a selection, but most selections have one main purpose. • An author may write to persuade you, to inform you, to entertain you, or to express ideas or feelings. The kinds of ideas and the way the author states them help you see the author’s purpose.

Author’s Purpose • There are 3 main purposes an author has for writing: • Inform - gives information • Entertain – tells a story; tries to entertain • Persuade – tries to get the reader to do or believe something

Author’s Purpose • In addition to these 3 main reasons for writing, an author may have another purpose: • He or she may be expressing personal ideas or views.

Strategy: Story Structure • Active readers pay attention to story structure for clues about the author’s main purpose. • Authors usually identify the problem of the main character at the start. They work through the problem as the action rises in the middle, and then solve it with the climax and outcome.

Vocabulary Strategyfor Multiple-Meaning Words • Context clues ~ Some words have more than one meaning. Use words and sentences around the word with multiple meanings to figure out which meaning the author is using.

Vocabulary Strategyfor Multiple-Meaning Words • When you are puzzled by a multiple-meaning word, read the words and sentences around it to get the context for the word. • Then think about the different meanings the word has. For example, direct can mean “to manage,” “to command,” and “to show the way.”

Vocabulary Strategyfor Multiple-Meaning Words • Reread the sentence, replacing the work with one of the meanings. • If this meaning does not work, try another one.

Words to Know Admiringly ~ • With wonder, pleasure, and approval

Words to Know Permit ~ • to let; allow

Words to Know Scoundrel ~ • An evil, dishonorable person

Words to Know Subject ~ • Person under the power, control, or influence of another

Words to Know Worthless ~ • Without value; good-for-nothing; useless

“Must Do” Visit the classroom library and choose a book. Read your book thoughtfully. Record at least 1 question on a stickie note and post in your journal. “May Do” Go to the library and check out a book. Take AR tests. Respond to story elements in reading journal. Prince Harry slammed for wearing four medals while honoring US servicewoman: ‘Pathetic’

P rince Harry has been hit with backlash for wearing four medals while presenting a prestigious “Soldier of the Year” award from his Montecito mansion.

The Duke of Sussex, who served in the UK armed forces for 10 years, appeared via Zoom on Thursday to present the award to US combat medic, Sergeant First Class Elizabeth Marks.

However, haters were distracted by Harry’s medals, which they claimed were any attempt to “create an illusion for the American market” and took attention away from the servicewoman being honored.

The prince pinned four medals to his chest: an Afghanistan campaign medal, a Golden Jubilee medal, a Diamond Jubilee medal and a Platinum Jubilee medal.

The first was presented to Harry for his military service in Afghanistan, while the other three were presented to him by Queen Elizabeth II.

“3 Jubilee medals… and a bunker service medal,” one snarked in a post on X.

“Good god, how pathetic,” another raged . “He needs someone to advise him on optics. The participation medals are a sad cry for ‘Looook at meeeeeeeee.'”

However, others jumped to the defense of the prince, saying his Afghanistan campaign medal was well deserved.

Harry undertook two tours of Afghanistan, first serving between 2007 and 2008, before returning for a second time in 2012.

“He is entitled to wear his medals,” one defender declared.

“Medals he earned,” a second stated.

Meanwhile, some eagle-eyed pundits pointed out that Harry was not wearing a Coronation medal recently given to him by his father, King Charles.

Royal commentator Richard FitzWilliams told The Sun that it was a “snub” on the prince’s part.

“The Sussexes do nothing by chance and this clearly emphasizes or is intended to emphasize his distance from the royal family,” he declared.
