With our phones, we may use the internet to discover new things as well. With their maps, they make it easy for us to locate our route, and we can even snap photos with them.

However, there are also some drawbacks. Overuse of phones by some individuals can be problematic. It might cause eye pain or even make it difficult to fall asleep. Furthermore, excessive phone use might cause us to lose focus when driving or walking, which is risky.

Thus, we must use our phones responsibly. It’s important to remember to take pauses and not use them excessively. Similar to consuming candy, moderation is key when it comes to this. Utilizing our phones sensibly may make them enjoyable and beneficial. However, we must exercise caution so as not to allow them to cause us issues.

Introduction

Differences in a cell phone and a cordless phone, the positive impact of cell phones, the negative impact of cell phones, works cited.

A cell phone, in other words also referred to as a mobile phone is a gadget that is operated electronically using frequencies of radio telecommunication which operates on a two-way basis within a given network. Since their inception, cell phones have contributed highly to several factors both negatively and positively. Motorola was the first telephone company to demonstrate the first handheld mobile phone.

Cell phones which are currently more reliable enable users to communicate over a two-way network. With this, users can communicate via radio frequencies throughout the world hence making communication easy. This is unlikely while using cordless telephones which have limitations on the area of coverage. Cell phones also do support many interesting features like the internet, Bluetooth. Infrared and also games (Consumer Reports, 2003). One can even take a picture of their choice and send it via the MMS service to another mobile phone. Interesting cell phone Applications can be stored inside the cell phone’s memory. Some feature cell phones also come with a memory slot card which allows the user to swap memory cards of different storage capacities. A wide range of recharging options like a USB port or a cigarette lighter characterizes the cell phone’s advanced features to those of the cordless telephone. In addition to these, cell phones also have Bluetooth hands-free features that allow the user to answer calls when driving or just for leisure, without using hands to access the keypad.

In the modern world where everything is rapidly changing, cell phones have succeeded in improving plenty of our lives. We can now monitor our premises and homes with the help of a cell phone. Keeping in touch with friends and family has never before been this easier and more fun. Cell phone technology has also seen a significant percentage of people access news and social networking sites such as Facebook from their cell phones (Knight Digital Media Center, 2009). In the event of an emergency, one can be sure to be able to convey a message regardless of the distance. However, cell phones have also impacted negatively on the user and the community at large.

In as much as the positive attributes of owning a cell phone surpass those of not owning one, there are disadvantages too. Cell phones have been said to be a major cause of road accidents due to overindulgence in calls and text messages whilst driving (eHow magazine). Children with access to high-end cell phones end up getting exploited especially by child predators. There are also concerns that the prolonged use of cell phones could in the long run have side effects on the user, thus causing diseases such as cancer of the skin. Security is also an issue because criminals take advantage of the cell phone’s ability to use different sim cards from different operator companies, to commit crimes like extortion.+

The world being a global village, cell phones play a major role in ensuring improved quality of life through a cheap and personalized communication medium. It is estimated that over 4 billion cell phones are in circulation worldwide. It is my opinion that the cell phone era has succeeded in promoting business among individuals and companies in general. Through cheap communication rates, information is disseminated from point A to point B seemingly effortlessly. Would surely advise anyone to acquire a cell phone, especially in these days of uncertainty.

Technology has become an important part of our lives and it is difficult to imagine life without technological devices such as smart phones. While smart phones are now becoming a commodity due to their several benefits, they may also impose certain costs on the society.

One of the benefits of smart phones is an increase in work productivity. Smart phones now have advanced computing technologies but at the same time they are more portable than laptops. This means one can also perform work tasks while travelling or just sitting in a café. Even students now use smart phones to access course materials on their schools’ and colleges’ websites.

Smart phones allow us to stay connected with others round-the-clock (Andrew). While cell phones also do that, smart phones do not only enable oral communication but also every imaginable form of written communication such as messaging, social media, and emails. In addition, smart phones now often incorporate video technologies which also enable visual communication.

One of the major disadvantages of smart phones is that it is negatively affecting our social lives including face-to-face interaction. First of all, smart phone users are increasingly substituting face-to-face interaction with technological communication. Second, even when smart phone owners are with family members or friends, they are easily distracted by smart phones (Glaser). Another disadvantage of smart phones is costs. It is not uncommon for smart phone users to have data plans to take advantage of the full potential of their devices. These costs can be substantial for low income people.

Smart phones have revolutionized modern societies by allowing individuals to become more productive at work and in studies. Smart phones have also revolutionized written communication in addition to oral communication. But this convenience has come at a cost including deteriorating social relationships.

  • Eye Health: Prolonged use of mobile phones can harm eyesight. Complaints like redness, itching, watery eyes, and dryness are common among frequent mobile phone users. Harmful rays emitted by mobile phones can also affect vision in some cases. To counter these effects, it’s advisable to perform basic eye muscle exercises, regularly wash your eyes, and take breaks while using the phone.
  • Distraction: Parents often complain about their children using mobile phones excessively, which can lead to less study and playtime. Even adults can get distracted from work or important tasks by mobile phones. To combat this, it’s a good idea to allocate specific time slots for mobile phone use. For example, students can study for an hour and then spend 10 minutes on their phone, repeating the cycle. Installing time-blocking apps that alert you when you’ve spent too much time on an app can also help.

In today’s age of technological advancement, mobile phones have become incredibly important. They’ve simplified our lives in many ways. However, how we use mobile phones can have both positive and negative effects. While they are designed to improve human interaction and provide quick access to information, overuse can lead to adverse outcomes, including negative health effects.

It’s crucial for both students and adults to be mindful of their mobile phone usage. There are social, medical and technical problems associated with the use of mobile phones. What forms do they take? Do you agree that the problems outweigh the benefits of the mobile phone?

Nowadays, the increasing popularity of mobile phones seem to be an unstoppable trend. However, whether the social, medical and technical dilemmas it causes will outweigh the benefits remains a controversial issue. My view is that despite the detrimental aspects, we can not just discard the little tiny tools.

First, it is obvious that the mobile phones have tremendously promoted and facilitated our communications, bridging the gap between people no matter how far away they are separate from each other. With mobile phones, businessmen can negotiate without bothering travelling long distance to meet; parents can know where their kids are at any time. If we do not have the devices, communication would definitely pose a significant obstacle to our social development.

Moreover, integrated with the cutting-edge Internet technologies, the mobile phones can be treated as little computers in people’s pockets. After installing varied apps, it can help navigate the route when driving, interact with friends with text, images and videos, and even act as an office assistant dealing with emails and office documents – the list is endless. Therefore, the mobile phones have become an integral part of our life.

That is not to say that we could disregard the negative aspects. It has been reported that some heart diseases, indulging in virtual world, invading the individual’s privacy are caused by overuse of phones. But any way, to be honest, all powerful technologies should be harnessed strictly under regulations.

In sum, mobile phones are just indispensable to our daily life; meanwhile, though the pros clearly outweigh the cons, the problems should be handled by efforts. Only by doing so can wen ensure that we can utilise the devices smartly, making our society more convenient and interesting.

According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, mobile phone distraction has a negative and significant association with psychological well-being .

The presence of electronic devices in the classroom is not the problem, but rather the way we incorporate them into situations in which we are already inclined to pay attention to too many things.

This highlights the disadvantages of mobile phones in school, where they can hinder effective learning environments.

A meta-analysis published in ScienceDirect found that excessive mobile phone use has been associated with distraction in the classroom, further underscoring the negative impact of mobile phones on students’ educational experiences.

Teachers need practical and enforceable strategies for dealing with phones in their classrooms to mitigate the disadvantages of mobile phones on students and maintain a productive learning environment.

2. Social Isolation and Reduced Face-to-Face Interaction

Mobile phones have become an integral part of students’ lives, but they also have some disadvantages. One of the significant drawbacks of mobile phones for students is social isolation and reduced face-to-face interaction.

Students tend to spend more time on their phones, which can lead to a lack of social interaction and isolation. They may miss out on opportunities to interact with their peers and engage in group activities.

This can lead to poor social skills, which can affect their personal and professional lives in the future.

Therefore, it is essential to strike a balance between the use of mobile phones and social interaction to avoid the negative consequences of excessive phone use.

3. Sleep Disturbances and Irregular Sleep Patterns

Sleep disturbances and irregular sleep patterns are some of the disadvantages of mobile phones for students. The blue light emitted by mobile phones can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Mobile phones have become an integral part of students’ lives, but they also have their disadvantages. One of the potential drawbacks of mobile phones for students is the increased potential for academic dishonesty.

7. Impact on Physical Activity and Well-Being

Mobile phones have several disadvantages for students, including their impact on physical activity and well-being. Students tend to spend hours lost in the virtual world of their mobile phones, which distracts them from their studies and sports.

This can lead to poor academic performance, loss of focus, and anxiety. The wide array of video games and other applications not only disturb them but also cause anxiety in students.

Students suffer from debilitating headaches and migraines due to this constant phone usage, which further leads to anxiety and depression. Poor performance in exams leads to isolation.

Students prefer staying away from friends and family and lose themselves in their mobile phones. This can seriously harm their mental health.

Excessive use of mobile phones causes eyesight problems in most people, and it can lead to eye swelling. Furthermore, mobile phones can encourage cheating, facilitate bullying, and create educational achievement gaps.

Conclusion on Advantages and Disadvantages of Mobile Phones for Students

In conclusion, mobile phones have both advantages and disadvantages for students. On one hand, they can be used as a tool for learning, such as using educational apps and accessing online resources, which can be beneficial for students.

They can also be used for communication and organization, allowing students to stay in touch with their peers and teachers and keep track of their schedules, offering clear advantages of using mobile phones in school.

Should kids have cell phones?

An increasing number of companies are now selling cell phones for kids . This is a fast growing market. A study conducted in the USA showed that in average children get their first cell phone at the age of 6 and that parents spend $462 per child in the latest technological gadgets.  The use of interactive screen media, such as smartphones and tablets , by young children is increasing rapidly but still remains  a controversial and understudied issue . Research on the children's utilization of cell phones and new family dynamics  has lagged behind the rate of adoption of these products.

No widely accepted pediatric guidelines regarding smartphone use by young children have been formulated yet. Mobile media differs from television in several ways. In addition to watching videos, small children can play video games , use educational apps and communicate with friends online. Smartphones offer new interactivity and can potentially absorb more time of children lives than previous forms of entertainment and older mobile phones.

Pros and cons of cell phones for kids

  • Safety : if the children have phones their parents can always reach them and they can always reach their parents. Moreover there are some tracking applications that serve to keep children under control and know their whereabouts. In fact a study by Child Guide Magazine found that 31% of parents bought cell phones for their kids for security reasons , in case children needed to contact parents. Phones have served the police to locate children that were lost in the forest or mountains.
  • Educational value : new interactive media, such as smartphones and tablets offer kids the opportunity of learn while playing. There are apps that help children learning math, languages, acquiring spacial skills, etc. Phones with internet connection can help them to look for concepts or words they do not understand and thus have a positive impact on children's education.
  • Responsibility : mobile phones are expensive. Owning a phone can help them develop a sense of responsibility and learn how to manage costs.
  • Social benefits : children want to do what their friends do. Most children in rich countries already have phones. Therefore, not having a phone may be considered a sign of social awkwardness. Smartphones are a great way to coordinate activities with other kids. Thanks to their phones children are better connected with their friends even when they are away on holidays. Moreover, according to scientific research  smartphones can facilitate the communication and social skills of children with autism.
  • Entertainment : children enjoy their phones as they can listen to music, play video games and watch videos. For their partents sometimes it is very convenient to have them entertained with their phones while they do house chores or drive. Some games such as Pokemon Go may make children also to go outdoors and be more sociable.
  • Dangers of the Internet : it's difficult to restrict access to inappropriate content in the Internet. Extreme violence, pornography, anorexia advocacy and ethnic or religious hatred are some of the contents parents would like to their children to avoind at all costs. However blocking all this content is not possible and kids sometimes find ways to bypass restrictions.
  • Consumerism and s ocial status : parents buying very expensive phones to their children may be sending the wrong message to their children.  Cell phones, as clothing, can serve as identifiers of the socio-economic background, and, therefore, contribute to create differences among children in school or the playground. Only some families may afford to buy expensive devices, such as the iPhone 6  or the Samsung Galaxy S6, for their children . Moreover the Internet is like a huge 24/7 shopping mall. Children may spend too much time checking things they want to buy.
  • Costly : if children do not stick to some rules of usage they may produce great costs for their parents. Losing or breaking a phone is a common incident. Children often get their phones stolen. Moreover, they could download many applications, make calls o utside their cell phones plans  or use 3g or 4G without WiFi connection . Some parents have received  shocking phone bills due to their children's irresponsible usage.
  • Procrastination and disruption : kids may be messaging or playing with their phones while they should be studying or paying attention to their teachers. Moreover, children should spend some time playing other type of games or toys such as Lego or Playmobil , which also have educational value.
  • Other inapropriate use : some children use their phones to take inappropiate pictures or videos and uploading them to Instagram or Snapchat . Smartphones have become also an instrument for bullying, sexual harrassment and blackmail among children.

Do you think the advantages of giving your kid a mobile phone outweigh the disadvantages? Are children safer or more exposed when they own cell phone? Are smartphones a necessary tool in modern life even for children? Would phones make kids more or less responsible? Share your views below!

Cell phones for kids under 10?

Most parents end up purchasing cell phones for their children. However, deciding what should be the advisable minimum age for children to get their own phones is also a difficult question. Most people would agree that a toddler is too young to deal with a cell phone, and that a 15-year- old is probably responsible enough to handle it. But when do you think parents should offer their children their first handheld? When children are 5? 8? 12?

Cell Phone Essay

In this cell phone essay you have to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the way in which cell phones and the internet dominate the ways in which people relate to each other socially.

This is the question:

These days, cell (mobile) phones and the internet are very important to the ways in which people relate to one another socially.

Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Analysing the Question

This is a type of question that has appeared in the IELTS test a few times:

  • The impacts of technology on the way we communicate with each other

With IELTS essay questions, you always need to note carefully exactly what you are being asked to write about.

In this case it is about cell / mobile phones and the internet . So you must write about both . Sometimes an essay may just ask you about one or the other.

This is also important in this cell phone essay:

  • 'The way in which people communicate with each other socially'

the pros and cons of using mobile phone essay

You are  not  being asked about work situations but social situations. So you should  not  talk about how these types of technology have impacted on organisations or workers.

You are also being asked if there are  more advantages or disadvantages . So you must clearly state your opinion on this and also write about both in your cell phone essay (as the suggestion is that there are both).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Cell Phone Essay Model Answer

It is rare these days to find someone who does not communicate and interact with others through a cell phone or the internet as they are widespread throughout society. I believe that the benefits of this development outweigh the drawbacks.

One main negative consequence of this development is that people may have become disconnected in relation to conversing with each other face-to-face. People now tend to use their cell phones or the internet to communicate, but rather than actually speaking, they send a message. Some of the most popular applications are WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Line, all of which encourage messaging. The result of this is that people may lack the benefits of engaging with others in conversation and the closeness this brings.

Despite this, there are several important advantages as well. Firstly, the internet and cell phones mean that people can stay connected however far away they are from each other. For instance, these days, many people live in different countries or go travelling in different countries. Cell phones and the internet mean that parents can easily keep in touch with their children who are on holiday and people who immigrate to live abroad can easily communicate with their loved ones when needed. In addition to this, the internet means that people also interact with strangers and increase their knowledge of other cultures because through such things as Facebook, people connect to all sorts of people around the world, becoming friends and also discussing and exchanging knowledge.

In conclusion, although a disadvantage of the internet and cell phones is the lack of face-to-face conversation, they have improved the way we can stay in contact with loved ones and exchange ideas with new people. Overall then, this is a positive development for society.

Bans may help protect classroom focus, but districts need to stay mindful of students’ sense of connection, experts say

Students around the world are being separated from their phones.

In 2020, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that 77 percent of U.S. schools had moved to prohibit cellphones for nonacademic purposes. In September 2018, French lawmakers outlawed cellphone use for schoolchildren under the age of 15. In China, phones were banned country-wide for schoolchildren last year.

Supporters of these initiatives have cited links between smartphone use and bullying and social isolation and the need to keep students focused on schoolwork.

77% Of U.S. schools moved to ban cellphones for nonacademic purposes as of 2020, according to the National Center for Education Statistics

But some Harvard experts say instructors and administrators should consider learning how to teach with tech instead of against it, in part because so many students are still coping with academic and social disruptions caused by the pandemic. At home, many young people were free to choose how and when to use their phones during learning hours. Now, they face a school environment seeking to take away their main source of connection.

“Returning back to in-person, I think it was hard to break the habit,” said Victor Pereira, a lecturer on education and co-chair of the Teaching and Teaching Leadership Program at the Graduate School of Education.

Through their students, he and others with experience both in the classroom and in clinical settings have seen interactions with technology blossom into important social connections that defy a one-size-fits-all mindset. “Schools have been coming back, trying to figure out, how do we readjust our expectations?” Pereira added.

It’s a hard question, especially in the face of research suggesting that the mere presence of a smartphone can undercut learning .

Michael Rich , an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of social and behavioral sciences at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says that phones and school don’t mix: Students can’t meaningfully absorb information while also texting, scrolling, or watching YouTube videos.

“The human brain is incapable of thinking more than one thing at a time,” he said. “And so what we think of as multitasking is actually rapid-switch-tasking. And the problem with that is that switch-tasking may cover a lot of ground in terms of different subjects, but it doesn’t go deeply into any of them.”

Pereira’s approach is to step back — and to ask whether a student who can’t resist the phone is a signal that the teacher needs to work harder on making a connection. “Two things I try to share with my new teachers are, one, why is that student on the phone? What’s triggering getting on your cell phone versus jumping into our class discussion, or whatever it may be? And then that leads to the second part, which is essentially classroom management.

“Design better learning activities, design learning activities where you consider how all of your students might want to engage and what their interests are,” he said. He added that allowing phones to be accessible can enrich lessons and provide opportunities to use technology for school-related purposes.

Mesfin Awoke Bekalu, a research scientist in the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness at the Chan School, argues that more flexible classroom policies can create opportunities for teaching tech-literacy and self-regulation.

“There is a huge, growing body of literature showing that social media platforms are particularly helpful for people who need resources or who need support of some kind, beyond their proximate environment,” he said. A study he co-authored by Rachel McCloud and Vish Viswanath for the Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness shows that this is especially true for marginalized groups such as students of color and LGBTQ students. But the findings do not support a free-rein policy, Bekalu stressed.

In the end, Rich, who noted the particular challenges faced by his patients with attention-deficit disorders and other neurological conditions, favors a classroom-by-classroom strategy. “It can be managed in a very local way,” he said, adding: “It’s important for parents, teachers, and the kids to remember what they are doing at any point in time and focus on that. It’s really only in mono-tasking that we do very well at things.”
