Co-education means learning of boys and girls in the same institution. Nowadays in most of the countries, boys and girls get education together in schools, colleges and universities. Co-education has advantages as well as disadvantages. In Pakistan, we have co-education in primary schools, in colleges and in post-graduate classes. In high schools it is not considered advisable to run combine classes.

In our country, much may be said in favour of co-education. It is economical to practice co-education in Pakistan. It is also not possible to build and equip separate laboratories, medical colleges and industrial schools and boys. There is an increasing demand for the education of woman. Lack of funds, scarcity of good teachers, and inadequacy of buildings are some of the hurdles that stand in the way of having separate institutions for girls and boys. Co-education is the only alternative to meet this demand.

It may also be argued that co-education helps to develop the character of students. By a close association, their mutual shyness is removed, and they begin to understand each other better. The zest for competition is stronger. In the presence of female students, the male students generally behave well and this self-imposed restriction makes better human beings. Teachers, who have had experience of both types, opine that with the presence of girls the standard of educational institutions is raised.

As against these arguments in favour of co-education, it may be stated in tropical countries sex-consciousness develops at an early age. It is, therefore, not advisable to offer opportunities to the boys to mix with the girls freely. The adolescent age being romantic is not hesitant to break the rules of conventional morality. Besides, mixed schools are often difficult to manage. All sorts of arrangements are to be made to meet the requirements of students. The subjects which may be necessary for girls may not be so for the boys. In institutions where co-education is prevalent, such things are taught to girls that never help them in their future life. Surely the field of work for women being is different from that of men. It is useless to have one and the same syllabus for both males and females.

The physical effect of co-education is also not healthy. Mixing of grown-up boys with grown-up girls at the colleges and at Universities causes a great distraction.

Co-education takes away the element of romance which is advantageous to married life. Familiarity, as it is commonly known breeds contempt. It eliminates the element of romance, which makes married life happy. Some teachers also argue that there are certain subjects which can be taught in the presence of both boys and girls with mental reservation only. And the teacher who feels embarrassment in the course of his lecture, can hardly do justice to the subject. The argument of economy is very strong in favour of adopting co-education in Pakistan. But it should be practiced after affecting certain modifications. For instance, there is no objection to the introduction of co-education among children under ten years of age. It should then be abandoned up to degree classes.

No harm is, however apprehended if co-education is introduced in the post graduate classes. At this stage, boys and girls develop a sense of responsibility. This type of co-education if adopted will do more good than harm to our country. To sum up co-education can be successful when there is a proper atmosphere for studies.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of assorted papers of Joseph Reeves. The records relate to his time as Education Secretary of Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, his role as Labour MP of Greenwich, his speeches, world travel and work for the cremation society. There are also papers and notes on his personal life and work collected by Alan Burton for research purposes.

Administrative / Biographical History

Joseph (Joe) Reeves was born on 28 January 1888 in Camberwell, London. His childhood was impoverished and he left school at 13 with a Labour Certificate. Reeves worked as an apprentice ticket, glass and sign writer for 5 years before starting his own sign writing business in his early twenties. He was a conscientious objector during World War I. Reeves had a troubled relationship with his first wife Lily, with whom he had two daughters Iris and Josephine. He eventually obtained a divorce from Lily on the grounds of her mental health problems and married Gladys in 1940. They had a daughter, Rosemary, in 1945.

Reeves was Education Secretary of the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society (RACS) from 1918-1938. He believed that 'the dynamic of education must be altered from individual assertiveness to service on behalf of the community'. While Reeves was secretary the Education Committee expanded its activities and provided equipment and premises for classes as well as holding drama groups and orchestras. The Committee also provided scholarships for weekend schools and conferences. Reeves also believed in co-operating with other adult education bodies to provide classes. The RACS also offered technical education for its employees in subjects such as book-keeping.

The RACS Education Department also pioneered and encouraged travel after the First World War and in 1919 Reeves called on the Co-operative Union to set up an organisation for co-operative travel overseas, which lead to the formation of the Workers' Travel Association (WTA) in 1922. Reeves was very interested in the Soviet Union and visited Russia four times between 1927 and 1961.

As part of the educational activities of the RACS Reeves recognised the development and potential of film as an educational tool. In 1931 the society purchased two films from Germany and the USSR that were shown as propaganda during meetings. By 1938 more films and equipment had been purchased and over fifty film exhibitions were held, with the society also making its own films. Reeves's interest in film led to his appointment as secretary of the Worker's Film Association (WFA) in 1938. The WFA was was jointly sponsered by the Labour Party and Trades Union Congress to encourage the use of films by the Labour movement. Reeves also founded and encouraged Kibbo Kift Tribes, which became known as the Woodcraft Folk, part of the youth branch of the co-operative movement.

As well as his work for the Education section of RACS, Reeves also served on the society's Political Purposes Committee from 1946-1953.

Reeves was interested in Socialism and the Labour movement from an early age and went on to found the North Camberwell Labour Party. In 1945 he was elected as a member of parliament for the Greenwich Constituency, a position he held until 1955.

Reeves was well travelled due to his involvement with the World Parliament Association, which allowed him to visit many European cities. He was also a member of Parliamentary delegations to the West Indies and Finland. Reeves was made an Alderman in 1927.

Reeves also made a contribution to the growing acceptance of cremation as an alternative to burial. He served as chairman of the Cremation Society and was a director of the London Cremation Company. He was also a president of the International Cremation Federation, another position that allowed him to travel widely. Without Reeves's involvement in this movement the 1952 Cremation Act, which regulated the practice, would never been introduced to Parliament.

Reeves also spoke and wrote on many issues regarding co-operation, and also on other social issues. Joseph Reeves died on 8 March 1969 aged 81.

Pakistan is predominantly an agricultural country. Majority of the people residing in villages. A village reflects a picture of regional culture and social customs. It shows a few signs of modern progress and development. It consists of simple houses, narrow paths and unpaved roads. Sanitary conditions are very bad. The villagers lead a very simple and natural life.

A village offers a matchless scenic beauty and freshness of the atmosphere. Lush green fields look very charming. There are green trees, vast pastures and flowery bushes everywhere. The sight of dawn looks very fascinating.

Life in a village very calm and peaceful. It is almost free of atmospheric and noise pollution. Though all the necessities and comforts of life are not available to the villagers yet they are free from tensions, anxiety and artificiality. There is no rush of traffic and no noise of factories. Villagers enjoy the peace of paradise here. They are content with a few facilities and little joys. They breathe fresh air and eat pure food.

The occupation of the majority of villagers is agriculture. They live a very difficult and hard life. They set to their work before the sunrise and remain busy all day. They plough the fields, sow the seeds, water the plants and reap the crops. Men and women both work in the fields and look after the cattle. The government offices, private companies, factories, skilled workers and technicians are rare in a village. However, a few artisans like carpenters, blacksmith and shoe-makers work in a village.

Villagers are generally simple, sincere and industrious people. They are very hospitable and generous to their guests. They enjoy mutual co-operation. Their joys and sorrows are common. They avoid fashions and affectation.

A village offers a few kinds of recreation and amusement. Villagers often celebrate religious and seasonal festivals with zest and zeal. They warmly take part in a village fair and enjoy theatre, folk-dance and sports. The “dhol” and the flute are their favourite music. They are often heard singing “Maheyas” and “Tappas”.

Though villagers enjoy a simple, pure, free and peaceful life yet they have to face a number of problems. The village life is a mixed blessing. It has its advantages and disadvantages. Certain basic amenities of life are not available on villages. There are problems of illiteracy, basckwardness, insanitaion, diseases, shortage of water and litigation. Now, most of our villages have metalled roads and the facility of electricity. But, the present condition is not satisfactory. They need more education, awareness of modern means of cultivation and better amenities of life.

Agriculture is the backbone of our national economy. More than seventy percent of our people live in the village. But, very little attention is given to uplift the condition of villages. Without taking solid and adequate measures for the improvement of village life, Pakistan cannot make progress.

The beauty of the rising sun in every village is matchless.

A Pakistani village consists of unpaved paths and streets. It has mud houses. However, a few houses are made of bricks. Heaps of dirt lie here and there. Stagnant water surrounds every village. It becomes a breeding spot for flies, mosquitoes and other insects. A Pakistani village offers an ugly picture of sanitation.

Most of the people in the village are uneducated. They are men of simple habits and limited needs. They have fellow feeling and sympathy for one another. They are religious minded. They celebrate religious festivals with great zeal. They are peace loving citizens. They are content with their little joys and sorrows. They do not have facilities of city life but they do not crave for them.

Their main occupation is agriculture. Early in the morning, they take out their ploughs and pair of oxen and go to the fields to cultivate the land. Most of them work in the fields of big farmers and other well-to-do people. All the families find some kind of work or the other. Even children are of great use. They add a little to the income of the family. Women do household work like cooking, washing and grinding of corn. The villagers are very hardworking people. They lead a life of struggle and poverty.

Life in a village is very peaceful. The green fields, the blossoming flowers fragrant air and the shining sun all leave a healthy influence on the health of the villagers. They feel happy in the company of singing birds and murmuring water. They eat pure and wholesome food. In the city, pure food is difficult to get. Moreover, in a village, there is no smoke of chimneys, factories and mills. The air is fresh and pure. However, village life is not without its drawbacks.

The villagers are uneducated, superstitious and backward. They do not keep pace with the changing trends of life. We should try to make our villagers happy and prosperous. A country which does not look after the interest of his farmers cannot make progress. The economy of Pakistan depends on agriculture. Most of its population lives in villages. We cannot make progress unless we uplift our farmers.
