How to Apologize in English (When You Make a Mistake)

How to Apologize in English (When You've Made a Mistake)

Oh no! You get an email from your boss asking where you were and realize you just missed a meeting! 😬 Now you need to apologize. But what’s the best way to apologize in English?

In English, we have the saying ‘everyone makes mistakes’, and it is a common saying for a reason: everyone does make mistakes. But, when it happens to you it sure doesn’t feel okay. The good news is, I can help you know how to apologize in English, without feeling too awkward.

You’ll learn exactly what to say and how to smooth things over so you can move forward.

Even better, b y the end of this lesson you’ll know how to resolve mistakes gracefully and with confidence, both at work and in your daily life, with 4 simple steps.

4 steps to apologize in English.

Lesson by Annemarie

How to Apologize in English — Step-by-Step

Step 1: admit the mistake..

It sounds easy, but this is something many people are uncomfortable with.

It takes a really mature person to own up or admit that they made a mistake. Hiding it or trying to cover it up frequently leads to trouble and as we say in English, it can come back to bite you ! For the sake of your professional and social reputation, it’s much better to be honest and admit you’ve made a mistake.

Mistakes are so common that we have many words for them, and will be useful in admitting it. We often use the present perfect when it happened recently or the effects of the mistake are still being felt.

You can say:

  • I’ve made a mistake. (a good one to use at work)
  • I’ve messed up.
  • I’ve slipped up.
  • I’ve fudged that up.
  • I’ve mucked that up.
  • I’ve bungled that up.
  • I’ve made a blunder.

We also say things such as:

  • That was an oversight. (This is a good one for work.)
  • That was an epic fail!  (For a huge mistake)
  • Well, that was a disaster!
  • That was totally on me. (A good one for work)
  • That was my fault. (A good one for work)

Of course, we sometimes get emotional about making mistakes. So it is natural to say things to express those feelings.

You can include these together with admitting your mistake:

  • Oh my goodness! I’ve made a mistake. (Some people say ‘oh my god’, or ‘OMG’ but please remember there are people who get offended by this language, so choose wisely based on your company.)
  • I can’t believe I did that! That was an epic fail!
  • I can’t believe it! That’s my fault. (A good one for work)
  • That was silly! That was an oversight on my behalf. (A good one for work)
  • I’m so embarrassed! I’ve slipped up.
  • I’m so annoyed at myself! I definitely didn’t nail that.

Step 2: It’s time to apologize.

You’ve recognized you made a mistake, admitted it and got some of those feelings out.

Now the mature thing to do is to apologize. Of course, you could say, “I’m sorry.” But we have many more options to apologize in English.

Plus, we often use stress to show we’re genuinely sorry with some key words. For example, you’ll want to stress words like SO sorry and REALLY sorry.

Here are some of the best ways to apologize:

  • I’m REALLY sorry about that.
  • I’m SO sorry, my bad.
  • I’m GENUINELY sorry.
  • You can’t believe HOW sorry I am.
  • Please forgive me, I’m so sorry!

These are good ones to use at work:

  • I REALLY  want to apologize for that.
  • I hope you can accept my apologies.
  • I would like to apologize.
  • Please accept my sincere apologies. (This is very formal, it’s a good one to use in writing.)

(Hey, want to improve your pronunciation with word stress? Here’s my full lesson on How to Use Word Stress in English .)

Step 3: Explain what happened (briefly).

After apologizing, it is helpful to briefly explain what happened.

You don’t want your explanations to be too long and complicated or it will sound like you are just making excuses.

Keep it short and clear.

In a moment I’ll show you exactly how to do that by putting this all together but for now, here are some short explanations you can use:

  • I really didn’t mean for that to happen.
  • It was an accident.
  • That was not what I intended.

Step 4: Say how you’ll resolve it.

You’ve admitted you made a mistake and apologized. The last thing left to do is let people know what you’re doing to fix the mistake.

It might be what you’re doing right now or  what you plan to do in the future to avoid this happening again.

You could say something like:

  • To make up for it, I’d like to… (do what right now?)
  • To make sure it doesn’t happen again, I want to… (do what in the future?)
  • You have my word that… (promise what will or won’t happen)
  • I’ll take care of this.
  • I plan on… (doing what?)
  • I’m working to fix this by… (doing what?)
  • I will have this taken care of by… (when?)
  • Please don’t worry, I’m already… (doing what?)

How to Apologize in English — An Example

Now you know all 4 steps to apologize in English and do it gracefully.

Let’s look at that example from earlier where you accidentally missed a meeting at work because you recorded the time incorrectly. It is a simple mistake with embarrassing consequences that make you feel unprofessional. But it’s not the end of the world . Remember, everyone makes mistakes.

Let’s just handle it with the 4 steps. Here’s an example of what you could say:

“Oh my goodness, that was a real oversight. I’m so sorry about that. I had that meeting down in my calendar for tomorrow. I would hate for this to happen again.  I want to be more careful in future, so I’ve found a great calendar we can use online and synch up all our meeting times. It has reminders, so this will not happen again.”

P.S. Want more lessons on how to deal with uncomfortable situations in English? Get all my lessons on topics like how to deal with rude questions or how to end a bad conversation in English .

Now it is time to practice what you have learned.

Choose one of these mistakes and tell me what you would say. Remember the 4 steps: Admit it; Apologize; Briefly explain; Say how you’re fixing it.

  • You have lost some important paperwork at work. You have searched everywhere and cannot find it. What do you say to your team leader?
  • You sent the wrong email to a potential business partner and in the email you included some private information about a different client. Your boss received a complaint about it.
  • Your child brought the class mascot, a fluffy toy, home for the weekend. It is a class toy and all the kids get a turn to take it home. You put it through the washing machine it accidentally ended up pink. How do you handle things with the class teacher?
  • Your friend loaned you a bag for your trip and you accidentally ripped the handle off because you used it to carry all your heavy books to the second hand store.

Please accept my apology. I can’t believe I did that. I’m genuinely sorry I saved pictures and was on sites I should have never seen. I will never get on sites I should be on. I will get rid of my phone today.

Gareth

“ That was an oversight on my behalf” is incorrect. It should be “That was an oversight on my part”. “That was an oversight on my behalf” would mean that someone else had made the mistake while representing you. An example of the correct use of”my behalf” would be “In my absence, my colleague apologised on my behalf.”.

Energodar

Mam I really impressed they way you teaches

Jaime

Again Thank you for your blogs full of common sense and clever. Now, my point is that I think that the obliged excuses are not the same in different contexts, p.e In a bank or in a workshop, in a shop or in a travel agency, etc so trying to memorize all ways to excuse is not good, we’d need a context, so sorry if I’m wrong. Jaime

Annemarie

You’re right that we have to adjust, based on the situation and who we’re speaking with. That’s why I always give so many examples in my lessons. I want my students to expand their vocabulary and language know-how so they can be adaptable. 😊

You’re very welcome.

Bahar

Hi Annemarie. Example 4: ” Oh my God! I’m so so sorry. I can’t believe I did that. I hope you can accept my apology. Please don’t worry. I’m going to buy another one, exactly like yours, tomorrow.

Tanya—Team Speak Confident English

Great example, Bahar! I would definitely accept your apology. Good work.

Great job using the strategies and language from this lesson, Bahar. Hopefully you’ll never need to use them though. 😊

Saba

They made a mistake They have made a mistake What’s the role of have in these two sentences,,,,and with the use of have is there any difference in these two sentences

Agnese

Hi! Here’s my example:

I feel terrible to admit that I’ve lost the report we finished last week. I’m genuinely sorry. I was convinced that I sent it to the managing authority, but I wasn’t. I’ll contact representative of the manging authority and explain the current situation and will try to agree on extension of submission deadline. And I’ve already started to prepare the report once more and I’m going to finish it as soon as possible. It won’t happen again.

Kelly—Teacher at Speak Confident English

Fabulous apology Agnese! You really nailed it! You have lots of really great grammar in here. The only things to adjust to absolutely perfect it would be: …but I wasn’t (we need a different verb here).

Which articles would you add here?: ___representative of the managing authority; agree on ____ extension.

I love your use of present perfect in ‘I’ve already started’. I also love ‘I was convinced that…’ great way to say it!

Nicolas

Hi Annemarie!! How are you? I´ve chosen example number 4.

Hi my friend! How are you? I need to tell you something… not to tell you. I need to ask apologize you. I´m so sorry about your bag that you lent me. It was an oversight on my part because I´ve put on more weight that your bag supports. So the handle off ripped. But you don´t worry about that. I´ve made a mistake and I´m going to by another one by next week. And It´ll never happen again.

If you did not finish your homework, you may want to find an excuse to avoid being penalized. There are a variety of excuses, from blaming technology to your busy schedule, that sounds like a plausible reason for failing to complete an assignment. When you settle on an excuse, work on delivering the excuse in a believable fashion. However, try to be careful moving forward. You do not want to lie habitually, as this reflects poorly on you as a student. In the future, try to make sure your assignments are done on time.

Step 1 Blame technology.

  • This is a great excuse if you had a paper you needed to type and print. It may also work if you have homework you had to do online. You could say you did the whole assignment, but then your internet cut out and you couldn't save anything.
  • It might be a bad idea to claim your printer stopped working. Your teacher may request you e-mail him/her the assignment instead, which you won't be able to do if you never did it. Teachers may also suggest you should have printed an assignment at a local library or FedEx instead of coming in with nothing.

Step 2 Consider your family's situation.

  • If your parents are divorced, for example, you can claim you were at your mom's last night but left your textbook with your dad this weekend. Many teachers are sympathetic to children from divorced homes. Your teacher may take pity on you if you use an excuse like this. [2] X Research source
  • Do you have any younger siblings? You could claim you had to babysit your little sister and she got sick, resulting in your being distracted from your homework. [3] X Research source

Step 3 Blame an illness.

  • You can try running around in the playground or hallways before class. This can help you look flushed and warm. If you look sick, your teacher will be more likely to believe you.
  • However, keep in mind some teachers may require a note from your parents in the event of illness. If your teacher typically demands proof of sickness, you may want to avoid using this excuse.

Step 4 Claim the work was too difficult.

  • Avoid saying you left your homework at home. Your teacher may request you call your mom or dad to have it delivered to the school. This will reveal you are lying.
  • Try not to use this excuse more than once or twice a term; otherwise, your teacher may see you as disorganized and be less sympathetic towards you if you need to make other excuses in the future.

Step 6 Blame your schedule.

  • Be careful using this excuse if you're not busy. If you're usually late for classes and do not engage in many extracurricular activities, your teacher may catch onto the fact you're lying.

Step 7 Avoid playing dumb.

  • Never lie you were absent on the day the homework was set. One glance of the register is all it takes for your teacher to see right through this excuse.

Step 1 Consider the teacher's personality.

  • If your teacher is particularly strict, be prepared to answer a lot of questions. A stricter teacher is likely to grill you, poking holes in your excuse. For example, say you claim you couldn't turn in your online math homework because your internet cut out. A strict teacher might respond with something like, "Then why didn't you go do your homework at a coffee shop?" Have a response ready. Try something like, "My mom was working and there was no one to drive me." [7] X Research source
  • Do you know anything about your teacher's personal interests? This can help you gauge what excuse may work for this person. For example, you know your chemistry teacher is the oldest of 7 children. He may be more sympathetic to a story about how watching your younger siblings kept you from getting your work done. [8] X Research source

Step 2 Keep things short and to the point.

  • Stick to only the important details. For example, say you're planning on claiming your piano recital got out late, and this is why you didn't finish your math homework. Do not go overboard with the details. Simply say, "A few students played their solos too long, so we didn't get done until 9:30 and it was a 45-minute drive home." Do not say, "Chester Mifflin spent 25 minutes on his routine when we were only given 10, and then Lisa Gregory was a little late getting up on stage..." The longer your lie, the more unbelievable it sounds. Most people would not remember this much detail.
  • If your teacher presses you for specifics, you can improvise as needed but avoid excessive detail. For example, your teacher might ask, "How long did the recital run over?" Do not say, "It was supposed to run until 8:30 but it was 9:23 when we got out." Instead, say something somewhat vague, like, "I'd say about 45 minutes."

Step 3 Go for a plausible story.

  • Take a few deep breaths before going into the room to help yourself stay calm.
  • Make eye contact with your teacher most of the time.
  • Be conscious of what you're doing with your body. Try to avoid fidgeting excessively.

Step 1 Think of what will happen if you get caught.

  • Refer to the syllabus for that class. There may be a section about honesty that goes over the consequences of lying to a teacher.
  • You should also look at your school's handbook if you have a copy. See if there are any sections about what happens if you breach academic honesty policies.
  • Consequences can vary from teacher-to-teacher. In some cases, you may only get a strict talking to. However, some teachers may be required to report these kinds of behaviors to the principal and your parents. This could land you in more serious trouble both at home and at school.

Step 2 Look at the consequences of simply being honest.

  • It may depend on the assignment. Late work may not be accepted, but if the assignment is only worth 10 points, is this really a big deal? However, if the assignment is worth 15% of your grade, it may be worth it to ask for an extension.
  • Talk to other students who've had this teacher in the past. How has this teacher reacted to late or missing work? Some teachers may accept late work for lower points. Some teachers may allow you to turn in work late if it's your first time. If this is the case, it may be a good idea to simply admit you didn't do the assignment.

Step 3 Compare consequences.

  • You can make a pro and con list for each scenario. Write down the possible benefits and possible drawbacks of each option. For example, you can write on the top of a piece of paper "Lying To My Teacher" and then have two columns, one for "pro" and one for "con." Under "pro," you may write something like, "Assignment is worth a lot of points - an extension could help my overall grade." Under "con," you could write, "If Ms. Davies finds out I'm lying, she will report it to the principal and I'll get detention for a week."
  • Weigh the pros and cons. If the pros outweigh the cons heavily for one option, this may be the right choice for you.

Step 1 Prioritize your homework.

  • Do your homework every day after school. Do not do anything else, like playing video games or playing outside, before finishing your work.
  • Write down all the assignments you have to do. Make sure to write down an assignment after a teacher mentions it. This way, you won't forget.

Step 2 Seek outside help.

  • If you habitually struggle to get your homework done and have an overall inability to concentrate, this can be a symptom of Attention Deficit Disorder. Talk to your parents about getting tested for ADD.

Step 3 Avoid lying habitually.

While lying too often could reflect badly on you as a student, if you need a good excuse for your homework not being finished, say you lost it. Just don’t use this excuse often, since your teacher will think you’re unorganized. If the homework was on the computer, try blaming technology. Say your computer crashed or your internet was down. Alternatively, claim you were ill last night and had to rest. Only do this if you don’t think your teacher will call your parents to check or ask for a sick note. If you have a sibling that doesn’t go to your school, you can say they were ill and you had to look after them. Or, if you do a lot of things outside of school and have lots of homework to do, pretend you were too busy and ran out of time. My assignment is due tomorrow and I haven't even started it yet!

i haven't finished the assignment yet. i'm really sorry

English expert at Atomi

i haven't finished the assignment yet. i'm really sorry

Well, if it really is due tomorrow, let’s do this and do it quick! You could have anything due tomorrow, so instead of a step-by-step guide let’s focus on some tips and tricks to pull off this craziness. Legions of students before you have done it and legions of students after you will do it so have faith—you can do it 💪.

1. Prioritise

This probably doesn’t need to be said but if it’s due tomorrow then clear your schedule tonight—this is absolutely your top priority right now! Normally we recommend getting plenty of sleep but if you have something due tomorrow, tonight's the night to push your bedtime back a little bit (still no all-nighters though!)

2. Get your head in the game

Okay, no matter how much of a mountain it seems, this has to be done tonight. Don’t let yourself even consider the option of handing it in late—just thinking that will make it even harder to finish in time.

It’s time to get your head in the game and focus on the task ahead. You want to grab some water and make sure you’ve eaten. Then, set yourself up in a clean, bright area, find a supportive chair and grab all of the resources you'll need to do your assignment.

You can check out our video on Study Spaces for everything you need to set up the perfect workspace.

3. Work out exactly what you need to do

To work as efficiently as possible you should first understand exactly what you need to do.

That means you need to think about exactly what ideas or topics you need to cover and what your approach should be. So, read the assignment and marking criteria carefully and identify any keywords. Also highlight any important details, like the word count or page limit, the submission format and any other info that will affect how you approach this task.

This will vary massively depending on the assignment. The point is basically just that you should make sure you know exactly what you need to do before you start. Trust me, it’ll make everything quicker if you do ⏰.

4. Do a brief plan

To make sure we can get this done properly in one night, the next step is to plan your answer. This will make it a lot easier to start writing and, if you have to do any research, you will know exactly what you’re looking for.

So, sketch out a brief plan onto a page. Work out what needs to go into your answer and how it’s going to be structured. It might feel difficult or pointless to plan at this point, but if you can get some of the hard work out of the way here it’ll become much easier to write!

5. Research efficiently

Now, this one is obviously only relevant if you need research for your answer. Gathering research for an essay or report can take time. By using the keywords from the syllabus and assessment notification, you’ll be able to focus on the resources that you actually need. As far as you can, drop your research straight into the plan and you’ll be moving much more efficiently.

Don’t forget to reference as you go! This will save you time and ensure you don’t make any mistakes 😅.

6. Quality over quantity

This is a seriously important tip. When you’re really under pressure, it can be tempting to just smash out as many words as possible so you can hit that word count—don’t do this! It’s just going to give you a whole lot of waffle and even worse marks.

Instead of waffling, stick to your answer plan, use your research and fall back on the ideas in our lessons . It will get you a much better result for not that much extra work ✅.

7. Do your final read over tomorrow morning

Once you’ve finally pulled off that answer, it’s time to go to bed. You’re probably going to be too tired, too stressed and too wrapped up in your answer to be able to give it a proper check and edit.

So, just get some sleep now, set the alarm 30mins earlier tomorrow and read over it again with fresh eyes and a clear mind. You should be able to pick up any little mistakes and make the whole thing read a lot better and generally end up with a stronger answer!

Even though this isn’t ideal, you can still pull it off! The secret is to be as efficient as possible. So, keep calm, find out exactly what you need to do, plan, research properly and don’t waffle.

Oh and next time, don’t leave your assignments to the last minute 😅. Instead, watch our lesson on Planning an Assignment and use the downloadable planner so you aren’t in this sticky situation again.

Late assignment submission excuses that don’t fail.

Academic success depends on completing assignments on time, but occasionally unexpected obstacles arise in life. Although it's always best to plan ahead and manage your time well, late submission excuses have become a common part of student life. In these situations, we need to be resourceful. In this article, we examine a few original and creative justifications for late assignment submissions.

But before you do anything, take a deep breath and think about your options. There are some good excuses for turning in an assignment late, and there are some that are just plain bad.

Good Excuses for Late Assignment Submission:

Although it is typically not advisable to give justifications for late assignment submissions because it is crucial to prioritize responsibility and time management, there might be occasions when unavoidable circumstances arise. Here are a few valid justifications for submitting an assignment after the deadline:

  • Personal Illness or Injury: If you had a sudden illness or injury that made it difficult for you to finish the assignment on time, that is a good reason to ask for a deadline extension. To prove your claim, offer the necessary proof, such as a medical certificate.
  • Family Emergency: It might be necessary to ask for an extension for your assignment if there is a serious family emergency, such as the hospitalization of a close relative or the occurrence of a natural disaster.
  • Technical Problems: There may occasionally be technical issues that are beyond your control, such as a computer crash, an internet outage, or a software malfunction. These problems may make it difficult for you to finish and turn in the assignment on time. Inform your professor right away, and if you can, include proof like screenshots or error messages.
  • Unforeseen Events: Unexpected situations, like a last-minute work commitment, transportation problems, or a personal crisis, may make it difficult for you to finish an assignment on time. If such circumstances occur, be open and honest with your professor about them.
  • Academic Overload: It can occasionally be difficult to meet all the deadlines if you find yourself overwhelmed with numerous assignments and coursework. In these circumstances, proactive communication with your professor is preferable.

Bad Excuses for Late Assignment Submission:

While it's critical to be open and truthful about legitimate justifications for late assignment submissions, it's equally crucial to identify and refrain from offering lame justifications that lack veracity or show a lack of accountability. Examples of justifications that are typically viewed as inappropriate or unconvincing include the following:

  • Procrastination: Blaming procrastination or poor time management for the delay will have a negative impact on your ability to prioritize your obligations. Taking responsibility for your actions is always preferable to using procrastination as a justification.
  • Social Events or Partying: Saying that you were unable to finish the assignment because you were out having fun or attending social events, parties, or other entertainment-related activities suggests that you value your leisure time more than your academic responsibilities.
  • Internet or Power Outage: Although technical difficulties can occasionally happen, using an internet or power outage as a justification without supporting evidence or documentation may be considered a weak defense. It is a good idea to have backup plans, like local power or alternative internet sources.
  • Forgetting the Due Date: Forgetting the due date for an assignment is not a good justification because it shows a lack of planning and focus. It's critical to remember due dates and use calendars, reminders, and other organizational tools to stay on top of things.
  • Personal Relationship Problems: It may come across as unprofessional and unconvincing to blame a late submission on relationship issues or disagreements with friends, family, or romantic partners. It is best to keep personal matters separate from academic obligations and seek assistance or support if needed.
  • Lack of Resources: It may not be acceptable to claim that you were unable to complete the assignment because you lacked the necessary books or materials. Planning ahead and making prompt use of the resources at hand are crucial.

How to Write an Excuse for a Late Assignment:

If you do have a legitimate reason for turning in an assignment late, it's important to write a clear and concise excuse. Here are some tips:

  • Be honest. Don't try to lie or make up excuses. Your professor will be able to tell if you're not being truthful.
  • Be specific. Explain exactly what happened and why it prevented you from turning in your assignment on time.
  • Be apologetic. Express your sincere apologies for turning in your assignment late.
  • Be respectful. Address your professor by their title and last name.

How to ask a professor to accept a late assignment by mail:

You can use the following example of an email to ask your professor to accept a late assignment:

Dear Professor [Name of the Professor],

I'm writing to ask for a delay in the due date for my [course name and number] assignment, [name of assignment]. The assignment was supposed to be turned in on [original due date], but I need it by [new due date].

I apologize for the submission's tardiness. I am aware that this is not an excuse, but a few unforeseen events kept me from finishing the assignment on time.

I had a family emergency that needed to be attended to first. I had to travel to be with my [relationship to family member] because they were in the hospital. This consumed a substantial amount of time.

Second, my computer was having some technical issues. My files were completely lost when my hard drive crashed. I lost a few days as a result of having to start the assignment from scratch.

Even though I am aware that the circumstances are not ideal, I am determined to do my very best to complete the task. The finished assignment is attached to this email.

I would appreciate it if you would give my request for a delay some thought. I am sure I can finish the assignment by the new due date.

I appreciate your consideration and time.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Final Thoughts:

While excuses for late assignment submissions can be amusing and humorous, it's important to keep in mind that accountability and time management should always come first. These ingenious justifications ought to be used sparingly and shouldn't serve to reinforce dishonesty or procrastination as bad habits. It's best to be open with your professors, ask for extra time when you need it, and make an effort to turn in assignments on time. Always keep in mind that education is a journey towards growth and development on both a personal and academic level. If you follow these tips, you will increase your chances of having your request granted.

Show answer from the AI monga Ang pagkakaiba sa pagitan ng mga salitang "Have you finished your assignment yet?" at "Have you finished your assignment already?" sa Ingles (US) ay may kaunting pagkakaiba sa kahulugan at paggamit. Halimbawa: - Have you finished your assignment yet? (Natapos mo na ba ang iyong takdang-aralin?) - I haven't finished my assignment yet. Halimbawa: - Have you finished your assignment already? (Natapos mo na ba ang iyong takdang-aralin nang mas maaga?) - Yes, I finished my assignment already.

i haven't finished the assignment yet. i'm really sorry

The first question, with “yet”, is asking if the assignment is done. The person asking expects that it will be or should have been done by now. For example: You’ve had three days to complete your homework. Have you finished it yet? Your project should have been done by now. Is it ready yet? We’ve been looking for your phone for hours. Have you found it yet? As you can see, “yet” indicates that there is an expectation that something should be finished by now. The second sentence indicates surprise or admiration. The person asking the question is the indicating that they are astonished the assignment was completed earlier than they expected. For example: Are we at the airport already? That didn’t seem to take long. Is it time to go home already? The day went by so fast! Has he finished his presentation already? That was short. Sometimes the surprise is positive and sometimes the person may be saying they think something happened too quickly and should have taken longer to be done well.

27 Professional Apology Email Templates

Depending on the situation there are a few different ways that you can draft a professional apology email. Before expressing how sorry you are, first, try starting with a positive statement. This could be something as simple as “thank you for your patience” or “I appreciate your understanding.” Second, take responsibility for your mistake without dwelling on it. A brief explanation of what went wrong should suffice.

If you are emailing to apologize for something that is not your fault, you can say “I’m sorry that happened” or “I’m sorry you’re going through this.” You can also express sympathy without apologizing, by saying something like “I know this must be tough for you.” Ultimately, the best way to apologize in an email will depend on the situation and your relationship with the person you’re emailing.

However, when it’s something you have to apologize for, you can’t simply say “I’m sorry” and explain what happened. You also should offer to make things right, either by redoing the task or by compensating the person in some way.

Dear [name],

I wanted to reach out and apologize for my behaviour at the team meeting yesterday. I know I was out of line and I understand if you’re upset with me. I’m sorry for snapping at you and I’ll try to do better in the future.

I wanted to reach out and apologize for [incident]. I know that it was not up to our usual standards and I am truly sorry for any inconvenience or frustration that it may have caused. We are currently investigating the cause of the issue and working on a resolution as quickly as possible. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I am writing to apologize for my actions on 2024. I was very upset about the way you handled the situation, and I should not have reacted so emotionally. It was unprofessional of me to say what I said or make the threat that I did. I hope that we can continue working together professionally after this incident.

I’m writing to apologize for my recent behaviour. It was wrong, and I know that now. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me and allow us to move forward with a clean slate.

For the past few months, I’ve been struggling with depression, which makes it hard for me to be happy and productive at work. I’m working on getting help for this issue, but until then, please accept my apology.

I’m sorry to hear you’re upset with me, and I want to make it up to you. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what happened. I thought we had a great conversation about the project, but maybe I misinterpreted something. If you could let me know what’s upsetting you, that would be helpful. Thanks so much for your time today!

I promise to do better in the future, and to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again!

I am writing to apologize for my behaviour on the first day of the [company name] internship program. I was late to work and did not follow directions as clearly as I should have. This is not acceptable, and I understand that it reflects poorly on both me and the company.

I know that it is important to show up on time and follow instructions to be successful in this program, so I will take this opportunity to learn from my mistakes and ensure that they do not happen again. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and thank you again for giving me this opportunity!

I’m so sorry for the way I behaved the other day. It was completely unprofessional and unacceptable, and I feel like a terrible person for letting it happen. I’ve been working on my temper and trying to be more mindful of how my actions affect others, and this was an example of how far I have to go in that regard.

Please accept my apology for what happened, and know that I will never let something like this happen again. Thank you for your patience during this time!

While missing an assignment is something most college students are bound to face in a certain point of their academic trajectory, it can be a very unpleasant experience which can result in several complications with your marks in a specific subject. The best thing would indeed be not having to go through it.

However, with so many things going on at the same time, so many tests to revise for and a ton of other assignments due as well, it may often seem like science-fiction to be able to have everything prepared on time. True, it may be difficult, but it’s not impossible. In this article, we will give you some useful tips to help you organize yourself better and, as we say in Spain, “not get caught by the bull”… again.

Let’s state the most important thing first, and that is

Forgive yourself. Regardless of the circumstances why you weren’t able to hand in your assignment on time. Acknowledging you’ve made a mistake and that you need to correct it is the first step towards improvement. Come to terms with what has happened and then let go; after all, there’s no use in torturing yourself over what you could have done differently once you can’t do anything else about it.

Speak to your professor

If you weren’t able to complete your assignment because you or someone in your family have had a health-related problem, teachers are more likely to put themselves in your place and give you a chance to compensate for the mishap. Also, if you or one of your relatives have been ill, ask the doctor for a medical letter to show to your professor and prove that you’re not just making up an excuse.

There’s (almost) nothing a good dialogue can’t solve

Even if you’ve missed your assignment deadline because you prioritized other things or simply because you procrastinated too much, talk to your lecturer if there’s anything else you could do in order not to fail the subject. Perhaps for this class, they’ll be taking the final exam’s marks more into account; or there are other assignments which would give you a good opportunity to make up for the incident. Keep in mind, however, that every professor is a world of their own. Just because Professor X told you that you could do a paper about tropical fish to compensate for the missed assignment doesn’t mean that Professor Y is willing to give you that chance. And furthermore, don’t try to have your way at all costs: if your professor says that there are no more opportunities, accept that no means no.

Don’t let it happen again!

Whenever one of your professors proposes a new paper to turn in or a new project to present, take good note of it in your calendar or agenda so that you make sure not to forget about it and end up having the deadline catching up with you. Once you have the date in which your assignment is due in mind, you can start preparing it with enough anticipation.

Get to work!

Go to your college or local library and start gathering the materials necessary for completing your project/assignment: read books, look up information online, take notes, write up some drafts… Of course, you don’t need to work yourself to death in a matter of a few days, on the contrary: dedicate every day a little time to your task, even if it isn’t more than an hour. If you start gathering up information and writing a couple of paragraphs since the very first day, you’ll see how you’ll have it done in time!

“I’m stuck?! Help, please!”

Is your assignment topic too complicated? You don’t even know where to start? Are you at a total loss? Don’t worry we all have been there. If you see yourself struggling with your assignment, you can always ask your professor your doubts or request for a tutorship. If you address them in a polite manner and they see you truly interested in your work, they won’t refuse. Another tip that always helps is regularly attending your lectures: more often than not, your professors may drop little hints about what they’re looking for in an assignment… or even in the final exam! You can also resort to asking around your circle of college friends for some solidarity between partners. Keep in mind that at least two heads think more than one!

If you follow these tips, you’ll see how you won’t miss another assignment again during your college years. But even if missing an assignment is not a very nice experience, think that you’re also a human after all and that it is impossible not to make a single mistake every now and then. Furthermore, there is always a valuable lesson to be learned from our slip-ups.

When I try to turn in an assignment, I get the message "It looks like you haven’t been added to this assignment."

I have an overdue assignment in my assignments list, however it isn't something which I have to do. When I try to submit the assignment in order to remove it from my list, I get the message "It looks like you haven’t been added to this assignment. Check with your teacher for details."

Another assignment in my list from the same team gives the message "Sorry, something went wrong" every time I try to submit it. This assignment isn't overdue, but it's something which other members of the team have to do, and not me.

Is there any way I can remove these assignments from the list? They are filling it up and I worry that if more assignments are set to that team my list will become full of overdue assignments which aren't actually meant for me.

Hi Annette,

It seems like now there have two old assignments when you enter the assignment tab in the team which you are not even able to click it to open.

Firstly, please use  Team for Web  and check whether the issue exists in online version of Teams. If not, have a try to sign out and sign in Teams to see if the issue is caused by some bad caches in application. Kindly try the steps in  Student Cannot Access Assignment - Microsoft Community  to clean the caches. Besides, make sure the Teams app is up to date,  click Avatar > Check for updates .

If the issue persists, we are sorry to convey that the assignments in Teams could only be deleted by teachers, for your reference:  Delete an assignment in Microsoft Teams and students are not allowed to delete the assignments on their sides, so you may need to ask your teacher to delete the older assignments which caused some kind of bug issues on your side to see if the issue will disappear after they are deleted. If not, ask your teacher to re-add you into this team to see if it helps. Follow the steps here to assign work to new students: Add a student to a class team (microsoft.com) .

Sorry for all the inconvenience it has caused on your side and we will submit a feedback in Teams for a better experience for newly-added students.

Best Regards,

  4. didn't finish…yet" versus "…haven't finished…yet"

The sentence "I did not finish it yet" is incorrect because of mismatched tense.
