Essay Topic Ideas

1. It's often noted that science fiction is a reflection, not of the future, but the present in which it was written. Given that perspective, what can we say about the present in which Bradbury wrote his stories? How is it the same or different from our own present?

2. Examine Bradbury's attitude towards technology in two or three relevant stories, comparing how each story andles scientific development and its consequences.

3. What are the children of Bradbury's stories like? What does this tell us of Bradbury's view of childhood and the responsibilities of parenting?

4. Consider how the framing sequences work in relation to the rest of the stories? Do they succeed in making The

Illustrated Man a cohesive whole - in terms of plot, or theme, or mood? Why or why not? 5. Consider how faith works in several stories. Being specific, what exactly does faith entail in these stories? Is faith rewarded in these stories? Why or why not?

6. Certain stories deal with the privileged classes of a society, others deal with the less privileged or fringes of society.

Compare a story from each of these categories and consider how class concerns may influence the way these stories are told.

7. Consider sanity as a flexible state of mind - a way to cope with reality, a means to better deal with the stresses of modern life. Given that premise, how does sanity function in stories where characters aren't sure of what they're perceiving or experiencing? What is the sane response, and is it always the right response in these stories?

8. Using two or three stories, examine how Bradbury sometimes overturns expectations in his plots, providing a natural consequence of events in a way readers don't foresee. What tools does he use as a writer to set up one expectation, what tools does he use to provide something different but still consistent with the story? Does this always work? Why or why not?

9. What are the most dangerous things in Bradbury's stories? Enumerate a general list and consider what that tells us about his view of the world.

10. Bradbury often has a fine eye for the wondrous aspects hidden in everyday life. Consider how he uses this in several of his stories, drawing specific examples. What effect does it have on the reader, how does it influence our understanding of the stories?

Lesson Plan Calendars

The Lesson Plan Calendars provide daily suggestions about what to teach. They include detailed descriptions of when to assign reading, homework, in-class work, fun activities, quizzes, tests and more. Use the entire The Illustrated Man calendar, or supplement it with your own curriculum ideas. Calendars cover one, two, four, and eight week units. Determine how long your The Illustrated Man unit will be, then use one of the calendars provided to plan out your entire lesson.

Chapter Abstracts

Chapter abstracts are short descriptions of events that occur in each chapter of The Illustrated Man . They highlight major plot events and detail the important relationships and characteristics of important characters. The Chapter Abstracts can be used to review what the students have read, or to prepare the students for what they will read. Hand the abstracts out in class as a study guide, or use them as a "key" for a class discussion. They are relatively brief, but can serve to be an excellent refresher of The Illustrated Man for either a student or teacher.

Character and Object Descriptions

Character and Object Descriptions provide descriptions of the significant characters as well as objects and places in The Illustrated Man . These can be printed out and used as an individual study guide for students, a "key" for leading a class discussion, a summary review prior to exams, or a refresher for an educator. The character and object descriptions are also used in some of the quizzes and tests in this lesson plan. The longest descriptions run about 200 words. They become shorter as the importance of the character or object declines.

Daily Lessons

This section of the lesson plan contains 30 Daily Lessons. Daily Lessons each have a specific objective and offer at least three (often more) ways to teach that objective. Lessons include classroom discussions, group and partner activities, in-class handouts, individual writing assignments, at least one homework assignment, class participation exercises and other ways to teach students about The Illustrated Man in a classroom setting. You can combine daily lessons or use the ideas within them to create your own unique curriculum. They vary greatly from day to day and offer an array of creative ideas that provide many options for an educator.

Fun Classroom Activities

Fun Classroom Activities differ from Daily Lessons because they make "fun" a priority. The 20 enjoyable, interactive classroom activities that are included will help students understand The Illustrated Man in fun and entertaining ways. Fun Classroom Activities include group projects, games, critical thinking activities, brainstorming sessions, writing poems, drawing or sketching, and countless other creative exercises. Many of the activities encourage students to interact with each other, be creative and think "outside of the box," and ultimately grasp key concepts from the text by "doing" rather than simply studying. Fun activities are a great way to keep students interested and engaged while still providing a deeper understanding of The Illustrated Man and its themes.

Essay Questions/Writing Assignments

These 20 Essay Questions/Writing Assignments can be used as essay questions on a test, or as stand-alone essay topics for a take-home or in-class writing assignment on The Illustrated Man . Students should have a full understanding of the unit material in order to answer these questions. They often include multiple parts of the work and ask for a thorough analysis of the overall text. They nearly always require a substantial response. Essay responses are typically expected to be one (or more) page(s) and consist of multiple paragraphs, although it is possible to write answers more briefly. These essays are designed to challenge a student's understanding of the broad points in a work, interactions among the characters, and main points and themes of the text. But, they also cover many of the other issues specific to the work and to the world today.

Short Essay Questions

The 60 Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence answer. They ask students to demonstrate a deeper understanding of The Illustrated Man by describing what they've read, rather than just recalling it. The short essay questions evaluate not only whether students have read the material, but also how well they understand and can apply it. They require more thought than multiple choice questions, but are shorter than the essay questions.

Multiple Choice Questions

The 180 Multiple Choice Questions in this lesson plan will test a student's recall and understanding of The Illustrated Man . Use these questions for quizzes, homework assignments or tests. The questions are broken out into sections, so they focus on specific chapters within The Illustrated Man . This allows you to test and review the book as you proceed through the unit. Typically, there are 5-15 questions per chapter, act or section.

Evaluation Forms

Use the Oral Reading Evaluation Form when students are reading aloud in class. Pass the forms out before you assign reading, so students will know what to expect. You can use the forms to provide general feedback on audibility, pronunciation, articulation, expression and rate of speech. You can use this form to grade students, or simply comment on their progress.

Use the Writing Evaluation Form when you're grading student essays. This will help you establish uniform criteria for grading essays even though students may be writing about different aspects of the material. By following this form you will be able to evaluate the thesis, organization, supporting arguments, paragraph transitions, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. of each student's essay.

Quizzes/Homework Assignments

The Quizzes/Homework Assignments are worksheets that can be used in a variety of ways. They pull questions from the multiple choice and short essay sections, the character and object descriptions, and the chapter abstracts to create worksheets that can be used for pop quizzes, in-class assignments and homework. Periodic homework assignments and quizzes are a great way to encourage students to stay on top of their assigned reading. They can also help you determine which concepts and ideas your class grasps and which they need more guidance on. By pulling from the different sections of the lesson plan, quizzes and homework assignments offer a comprehensive review of The Illustrated Man in manageable increments that are less substantial than a full blown test.

Use the Test Summary page to determine which pre-made test is most relevant to your students' learning styles. This lesson plan provides both full unit tests and mid-unit tests. You can choose from several tests that include differing combinations of multiple choice questions, short answer questions, short essay questions, full essay questions, character and object matching, etc. Some of the tests are designed to be more difficult than others. Some have essay questions, while others are limited to short-response questions, like multiple choice, matching and short answer questions. If you don't find the combination of questions that best suits your class, you can also create your own test on The Illustrated Man .

Create Your Own Quiz or Test

You have the option to Create Your Own Quiz or Test. If you want to integrate questions you've developed for your curriculum with the questions in this lesson plan, or you simply want to create a unique test or quiz from the questions this lesson plan offers, it's easy to do. Cut and paste the information from the Create Your Own Quiz or Test page into a Word document to get started. Scroll through the sections of the lesson plan that most interest you and cut and paste the exact questions you want to use into your new, personalized The Illustrated Man lesson plan.

Prologue Summary

The narrator, on a walking tour of Wisconsin in early September, meets the Illustrated Man. He doesn’t realize the Man is tattooed yet but does notice that he’s overweight, with the face of a child.

The Man asks if the narrator knows where he can find a job; he has been unable to hold one down for 40 years. Despite the heat, he does not roll up the sleeves of his shirt. He explains to the narrator that, though this is prime carnival season, they always fire him after 10 days or so. Once he confirms it’s all right if he stays, he shows the narrator the Illustrations on his body. Children especially seem to enjoy them: “Everyone wants to see the pictures,” the Man says, “and yet nobody wants to see them” (2).

The Illustrated Man Metaphors and Similes

By ray bradbury.

These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own.

Written by Timothy Sexton

The Illustrated Man

In the prologue to the collection which introduces the unifying element—the illustrated man—the tattoos covering his body which give him his nickname as described in great detail with flourishes of prose. All the expenditure of information on the subjects and vivid quality of colors are less viable a means of conveying his overall appearance than one single, easily digested and understood metaphor:

“the man was a walking treasure gallery”

"Kaleidoscope"

The opening paragraph of “Kaleidoscope” is—appropriately, if not necessarily by design—a kaleidoscope of metaphorical imagery. The imagery which piles up quite quickly here is effective at creating an image in the mind for the reader of something that—at least when he was writing—most could not easily imagine based on film or TV:

“The first concussion cut the rocket up the side with a giant can opener. The men were thrown into space like a dozen wriggling silverfish. They were scattered into a dark sea; and the ship, in a million pieces, went on, a meteor swarm seeking a lost sun.”

Simple and Effective

Sometimes the most effective metaphor can be the simplest. Whereas the example above pile up a collection of images on top of the next, much can also be accomplished with a simple declarative statement that just about anybody could relate to:

“The ship was quiet as a stopped clock.”

Confusing and Complex

On the other hand, sometimes the way to go is toss in some really off-the-wall comparisons and allow the reader to figure out the figurative language on their own. The nice thing about writing within a genre like science fiction is that precision does not always have to be at the forefront of a metaphor. Just the strangeness of the comparison is often enough to create the mood or atmosphere desired:

“The white, white jungle with the pale cheese-colored leaves, and the earth carved of wet Camembert, and the tree boles like immense toadstools—everything black and white.”

It’s not The Martian Chronicles , but the tattoos on the illustrated man do tell some stories about the red planet. In one of them, some perhaps rather surprising information about Mars is conveyed through the metaphorical language of a character:

“Mars is like that uncleaned closet we have neglected for millenniums. Sin has collected there like bric-a-brac.”

Is India a Safe Place for Women? Another Brutal Killing Raises the Question.

The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at her own hospital has brought up, once again, uncomfortable truths about a country that wants to be a global leader.

Young women protesting with raised fists and holding a banner saying “we want justice”

By Anupreeta Das and Sameer Yasir

In December 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student boarded a bus in New Delhi a little after 9 p.m., expecting it would take her home. Instead, she was gang-raped and assaulted so viciously with an iron rod that her intestines were damaged. She died days later as India erupted in rage.

Nearly 12 years later, the nation is convulsing with anger once again — this time, over the ghastly rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in a Kolkata hospital, as she rested in a seminar room after a late-night shift. Since the Aug. 9 killing, thousands of doctors have gone on strike to demand a safer work environment and thousands more people have taken to the streets to demand justice.

For a country desperate to be seen as a global leader, repeated high-profile cases of brutal sexual assaults highlight an uncomfortable truth: India, by many measures , remains one of the world’s most unsafe places for women. Rape and domestic violence are relatively common, and conviction rates are low.

This week, the Supreme Court of India took up the Kolkata case as one of fundamental rights and safety, questioning how hospital administrators and police officers had handled it and saying new protective measures were needed. “The nation cannot wait for another rape and murder for real changes on the ground,” Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said.

Gender-related violence is hardly unique to India. But even as millions of Indian women have joined the urban work force in the past decade, securing their financial independence and helping to fuel the country’s rapid growth, they are still often left to bear the burden of their own safety.

Longstanding customs that both repress women and in many cases confine them to the home have made their safety in public spaces an afterthought. It can be dangerous for a woman to use public transportation, especially at night, and sexual harassment occurs frequently on the streets and in offices. Mothers tell their daughters to be watchful. Brothers and husbands drop their sisters and wives off at work.

Cleveland Browns Star Nick Chubb to Begin Season on PUP List

James rapien | aug 26, 2024.

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (24) runs the ball before being brought down by Cincinnati Bengals safety Dax Hill (23) and linebacker Logan Wilson in the first quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at FirstEnergy Stadium in downtown Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023. The Browns led 10-0 at halftime.

CINCINNATI — Browns running back Nick Chubb will miss at least the first four games of the season as he continues to recover from knee surgery according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The former Pro Bowler could still suit up against the Bengals this season. Cleveland hosts Cincinnati in Week 7 (Oct. 20). The Bengals welcome the Browns to down on Dec. 19.

With Chubb out, look for former University of Cincinnati star Jerome Ford to start at running back for the Browns.
