Chareen Snelson , Boise State University Follow

Document Type

Publication date.

YouTube has grown to become the largest and most highly visited online video-sharing service, and interest in the educational use of YouTube has become apparent. Paralleling the rise of academic interest in YouTube is the emergence of YouTube scholarship. This article presents the results of a review of 188 peer reviewed journal articles and conference papers with "YouTube" in the title that were published between 2006 and 2009. Four questions were answered through the review of YouTube literature: (1) What is the overall distribution of publication activity for refereed journal articles and conference papers with "YouTube" in the title? (2) How are publications with "YouTube" in the title distributed across academic disciplines? (3) What have scholars written about instructional methodologies involving YouTube in a sample of literature containing "YouTube" in the title? (4) What have scholars reported about the results of studies involving YouTube in a sample of literature containing "YouTube" in the title? An analysis of the publications revealed that the literature emerged from multiple academic disciplines. The sample of literature included 39 articles and papers describing methods for teaching with YouTube. A total of 99 articles and papers containing the results of research studies were identified and categorized. This literature review is particularly relevant to those online educators who are interested in learning what scholars from their own academic disciplines are writing about YouTube. An emphasis is placed on trends in teaching and research discussed in the sampled literature.

A systematic literature review on teaching teachers pedagogy through YouTube video technology

Profile image of HARUN ABUBAKAR. SHIKA

Education teachers' pedagogy (ELP) is a fundamental portion and backbone of all classroom teachers, and instructional intervention through YouTube video technology in our contemporary era. This paper articulates a rational literature investigation and analysis of the ELP and YouTube video technology. The findings expose the interference influence of ELP with YouTube video technology, such as YouTube channels for educational purposes. YVCE is an ICT dispersion for determining students' academic performance in the educational course and other subjects in general. The systematic literature review (SLR) discovered findings from a recent study between December 2012 and October 2022. Excellence assessment screening of articles has been done, together with additional removal of repeated papers from the study. 30 articles met the modification and inclusion/elimination measures out of 123 papers. The adapted preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses demonstrate the review of literature accordingly. The researchers observed, completed, and deliberated the implication of the SLR. This has been directed by the upcoming ELP with YouTube video technology.

High-stakes student testing, accountability for students' outcomes, new educational trends, and revised curricula and standards are only a few of the reasons that teachers must learn to teach complex material with skilled and intentional practices. As a result, professional development for educators is in critical demand. Nevertheless, research in the field of professional development indicates that most teachers do not experience effective teacher training (Desimone et al., 2002; Guskey, 2002). Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to examine one professional development opportunity using the video-sharing tool, YouTube, as a training modality for in-servicing teachers. For this study, the researchers conducted interviews with six teachers currently teaching in Western Pennsylvania to analyze their perceptions about the YouTube teacher training method. The results of the study indicated that the YouTube training tool is a quality training tool to assist teachers in the imple...

The purpose of this study was to describe the teacher's self-perceived level digital competence in the use of YouTube as a learning resource. As specific objectives, the level of competence was compared across the variables gender, age, and years of experience. For this, a non-experimental, quantitative, and ex post facto design was used. Data collection was carried out in the last quarter of 2022, with a sample of 2,157 respondents. The results showed that the self-perceived level was high in relation to the ability to search and share information, although it was medium-to-low for the creation of content. Regarding gender, significant differences were found in favor of the male teacher. Regarding age and years of teaching, significant and negative correlations were found, with an inverse relationship between the increase in age and experience and the decrease in digital competence.

In the past decade, Internet platforms have undergone a steady and rapid growth. Within this context, their use by young people becomes significative. YouTube is not the exception to this phenomenon, furthermore, it has gained relevance both in quantitative and qualitative terms, that is, in the number of subscribers and visualizations, as well as in the variety of content that it offers. Thus, in order to widen the horizon and understand how young people experience the world, and based on the assumption that platforms are key spaces for this purpose, this work presents a literature review where the most relevant contributions regarding YouTube and its relation to the teaching and learning practices are collected. Finally, based on the vacancies we have identified, we present some considerations that stem from this analysis and offer some possible future lines of investigation.

Exploring the New Era of Technology-Infused Education

Information Communication Technologies have had a major impact in education today. Various ICT tools have been used to produce very favorable outcomes in terms of student learning. One such tool is YouTube which has had a dynamic influence on teaching and learning and is widely used by teachers in the classroom. The focus of this study is to examine how teachers would respond to the use of ICT tools, namely YouTube, as a form of delivery for their own staff development training. In this study, we surveyed teachers to assess their feelings on this form of training. Our findings showed a favorable response to this form of training using YouTube and demonstrated a rationale supported by a list of themes related to their rationale for favoring this choice.

The rise in popularity of YouTube has made the use of short video clips during college classroom instruction a common learning tool. However, questions still remain on how to best implement this learning tool as well as students' perceptions of its use. Blended Learning Theory and Information Processing Theory provide insights into successful integration of technology into the classroom. Literature on multimedia and discussions is also reviewed to shed light on their potential value as teaching techniques. As an example of successful integration, a method of presenting YouTube clips is described in a psychology course. Immediately after the videos, the class participated in structured discussions. Students' perceptions of the YouTube videos were positive; however, students perceived certain videos as more helpful than others. In addition, class quiz scores are reflected on as indices of learning.

Literature review of youtube in teaching activities.

Shizhen Jia , Washington State University Follow

As the largest and most highly visited online video-sharing service, YouTube is becoming an educational tool that improves instructors’ teaching and students’ learning in many ways. However, few studies synthesized existing studies of using YouTube in teaching activities. This paper conducts a literature review of journal articles and conference proceedings to understand the benefits and limitations of using YouTube in teaching and how educators apply this technology in their teaching activities. A search of various databases including ACM Digital Library, Springer and ScienceDirect identified 30 unique articles on this topic. We analyzed these articles using a taxonomy for teaching. This literature review should be of interest to educators who want to apply YouTube in their teaching activity.
