Knowing where you stand on issues and knowing how to argue for or against something is a skill that will serve you well both inside and outside of the classroom.

Persuasion is the art of using logic to prompt audiences to change their mind or take action , and is generally seen as accomplishing that goal by appealing to emotions and feelings.

A persuasive essay is one that attempts to get a reader to agree with your perspective.

What is a persuasive essay?

Ready for some tips on how to produce a well-written, well-rounded, well-structured persuasive essay? Just say yes. I don’t want to have to write another essay to convince you!

How Do I Write a Persuasive Essay?

What are some good topics for a persuasive essay, how do i identify an audience for my persuasive essay, how do you create an effective persuasive essay, how should i edit my persuasive essay.

Your persuasive essay needs to have the three components required of any essay: the introduction , body , and conclusion .

That is essay structure. However, there is flexibility in that structure.

There is no rule (unless the assignment has specific rules) for how many paragraphs any of those sections need.

Although the components should be proportional; the body paragraphs will comprise most of your persuasive essay.

What should every essay include?

How Do I Start a Persuasive Essay?

As with any essay introduction, this paragraph is where you grab your audience’s attention, provide context for the topic of discussion, and present your thesis statement.

TIP 1: Some writers find it easier to write their introductions last. As long as you have your working thesis, this is a perfectly acceptable approach. From that thesis, you can plan your body paragraphs and then go back and write your introduction.

TIP 2: Avoid “announcing” your thesis. Don’t include statements like this:

  • “In my essay I will show why extinct animals should (not) be regenerated.”
  • “The purpose of my essay is to argue that extinct animals should (not) be regenerated.”

Announcements take away from the originality, authority, and sophistication of your writing.

Instead, write a convincing thesis statement that answers the question "so what?" Why is the topic important, what do you think about it, and why do you think that? Be specific.

How Many Paragraphs Should a Persuasive Essay Have?

This body of your persuasive essay is the section in which you develop the arguments that support your thesis. Consider these questions as you plan this section of your essay:

  • What arguments support your thesis?
  • What is the best order for your arguments?
  • What evidence do you have?
  • Will you address the opposing argument to your own?
  • How can you conclude convincingly?

TIP: Brainstorm and do your research before you decide which arguments you’ll focus on in your discussion. Make a list of possibilities and go with the ones that are strongest, that you can discuss with the most confidence, and that help you balance your rhetorical triangle .

What Should I Put in the Conclusion of a Persuasive Essay?

The conclusion is your “mic-drop” moment. Think about how you can leave your audience with a strong final comment.

And while a conclusion often re-emphasizes the main points of a discussion, it shouldn’t simply repeat them.

TIP 1: Be careful not to introduce a new argument in the conclusion—there’s no time to develop it now that you’ve reached the end of your discussion!

TIP 2 : As with your thesis, avoid announcing your conclusion. Don’t start your conclusion with “in conclusion” or “to conclude” or “to end my essay” type statements. Your audience should be able to see that you are bringing the discussion to a close without those overused, less sophisticated signals.

The conclusion of a persuasive essay

If your instructor has assigned you a topic, then you’ve already got your issue; you’ll just have to determine where you stand on the issue. Where you stand on your topic is your position on that topic.

Your position will ultimately become the thesis of your persuasive essay: the statement the rest of the essay argues for and supports, intending to convince your audience to consider your point of view.

If you have to choose your own topic, use these guidelines to help you make your selection:

  • Choose an issue you truly care about
  • Choose an issue that is actually debatable

Simple “tastes” (likes and dislikes) can’t really be argued. No matter how many ways someone tries to convince me that milk chocolate rules, I just won’t agree.

It’s dark chocolate or nothing as far as my tastes are concerned.

Similarly, you can’t convince a person to “like” one film more than another in an essay.

You could argue that one movie has superior qualities than another: cinematography, acting, directing, etc. but you can’t convince a person that the film really appeals to them.

Debatable and non-debatable concepts

Once you’ve selected your issue, determine your position just as you would for an assigned topic. That position will ultimately become your thesis.

Until you’ve finalized your work, consider your thesis a “working thesis.”

This means that your statement represents your position, but you might change its phrasing or structure for that final version.

When you’re writing an essay for a class, it can seem strange to identify an audience—isn’t the audience the instructor?

Your instructor will read and evaluate your essay, and may be part of your greater audience, but you shouldn’t just write for your teacher.

Think about who your intended audience is.

For an argument essay, think of your audience as the people who disagree with you—the people who need convincing.

That population could be quite broad, for example, if you’re arguing a political issue, or narrow, if you’re trying to convince your parents to extend your curfew.

Once you’ve got a sense of your audience, it’s time to consult with Aristotle. Aristotle’s teaching on persuasion has shaped communication since about 330 BC. Apparently, it works.

Ethos, pathos and logos

Aristotle taught that in order to convince an audience of something, the communicator needs to balance the three elements of the rhetorical triangle to achieve the best results.

Those three elements are ethos , logos , and pathos .

Ethos relates to credibility and trustworthiness. How can you, as the writer, demonstrate your credibility as a source of information to your audience?

How will you show them you are worthy of their trust?

How to make your essay credible

  • You show you’ve done your research: you understand the issue, both sides
  • You show respect for the opposing side: if you disrespect your audience, they won’t respect you or your ideas

Logos relates to logic. How will you convince your audience that your arguments and ideas are reasonable?

How to use logic in essays

You provide facts or other supporting evidence to support your claims.

That evidence may take the form of studies or expert input or reasonable examples or a combination of all of those things, depending on the specific requirements of your assignment.

Remember: if you use someone else’s ideas or words in your essay, you need to give them credit.

Pathos relates to emotion. Audiences are people and people are emotional beings. We respond to emotional prompts. How will you engage your audience with your arguments on an emotional level?

Title: Tell your audience what they are reading.

Hook : Provide your audience with a reason to continue reading.

It is challenging to get the reader to fully agree with the writer’s opinion if they don’t fully understand it. Saying the same thing in various ways ensures the reader gets many bites at the ‘understanding’ cherry.

Repetition Example: “The use of plastic bags is not only bad for the environment, but it is also bad for our economy. Plastic bags are not biodegradable, meaning they will not decompose and will continue to take up space in landfills. Plastic bags are also not recyclable, meaning they will not be reused and will instead end up in landfills. A persuasive essay is intended to persuade readers to do certain things, or not to do certain things. It is the sole aim of the writer to coax or tempt readers, and force them to do certain things or take actions. However, an argumentative essay intends to make readers see both sides of the coin. It is up to them to select any of the two. In other words, an argumentative essay presents both arguments; both for and against a thing, and leaves the readers to decide. On the other hand, a persuasive essay intends to make readers do certain things. Therefore, it presents arguments only about one aspect of the issue.

In a persuasive essay, the writer aims to convince the reader of an opinion or stance on a topic using a mixture of research-based evidence, emotion, and appeals to credibility. Persuasive essay writing is sometimes conflated with argumentative essay writing . However, while both genres aim to justify a claim and persuade the reader, they differ in style and tone. Whereas argumentative writing is structured strictly and carries a dispassionate and even impersonal tone, persuasive writing is more open-ended. In a persuasive essay, the writer is free to use a more informal tone, write in the first person, and employ a creative or non-traditional structure. 

Think about a lawyer making a case in front of a jury, a politician making a speech on the campaign trail, or an essayist writing an opinion-editorial. While the majority of their argument may be rooted in fact and research, they may also use emotion and rhetorical devices to manipulate the audience. Rather than strictly following the structure of an academic essay, in which the argument and evidence are laid out clearly, they may draw the audience in with a personal anecdote, disarm them with humor, or call them to action with a chant. Ultimately, the goal of the essay is to convince the reader to adopt their position on an issue.

In this essay, we’ll discuss the style, substance, process, and structure of persuasive essays. 

Style of persuasive essays

In persuasive writing, the operative concept is persuasion, so the tone of the writing may be serious, but informal, and information may be presented in a way that may manipulate the reader with poetic flourish. The writer may utilize various rhetorical techniques and strategies to sway their audience and compel them to adopt their opinion. As a result, hard evidence, while useful and important, is not the sole form of justification for their position that a writer can use. They can also appeal to morality, ethics, logic, opinion, and emotion. 

Rhetorical appeals: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

Over 2,000 years ago, the fabled Greek philosopher and polymath Aristotle provided a theory of rhetoric, or persuasive language, that is still widely applicable today. Aristotle theorized three main tools of persuasion: ethos , logos , and pathos . Understanding these concepts and how they operate will help any writer craft more compelling and persuasive writing.

Ethos , the Greek word for “character,” describes an appeal to authority, credibility, or ethics. When a writer utilizes ethos, they attempt to demonstrate to their audience that they are a trustworthy and credible voice on the subject that they are discussing. Audiences are more likely to trust experts, such as a doctor writing about health, a lawyer writing about law, or an economist writing about the economy. However, writers do not need to be experts in order to establish ethos. Writers may build credibility by citing respected sources, using strong grammar, acknowledging contrasting opinions, and establishing common ground with their audience.

Even if a writer lacks authority on a subject, they can garner the trust of their audience by demonstrating their integrity and honesty. For example, a politician may not be an expert on a given subject, but they can win voters by successfully painting themselves as a person of strong character and morality. In order to establish ethos, it is crucial for writers to identify and speak directly to their target audience in order to build their trust.

Logos , the Greek word for “reason,” describes an appeal to logic. In order to establish logos, a writer must use sound evidence, appeal to fact, and lay out their argument in a logical and convincing order. In order for an argument to be logical, it should follow the following rules:

  • It should rely on several relevant premises, or statements that support a conclusion.
  • The premises should be laid out in a cohesive and sensible order.
  • All premises should be accurate and defensible.
  • Altogether, your premises should address all of the most important issues relevant to your topic.
  • Your premises and claims should not be overly vague, too strong, distracting, or irrelevant to your conclusion.
  • You should avoid logical fallacies .

By following these rules, you should be able to craft a logical argument. While logical arguments do not always need to utilize facts and research, the use of these tools always helps to strengthen your case. Importantly, persuasive writing should always avoid illogical arguments , i.e., arguments that can be disproven using logic, but they may include non-logical arguments , i.e,. arguments that cannot be proven or disproven using logic, including appeals to emotion.

Pathos , the Greek word for “passion,” “suffering,” or “experience,” describes an appeal to emotion. Emotion can be a very persuasive tool if used well. A writer may utilize emotion by evoking positive emotions, such as desire, aspiration, and love, or they may evoke negative emotions, such as anger, shame, and fear. Writers may try to appeal to universal ideals or the specific beliefs of their audience. There are various ways that writers can evoke these emotions:

  • Storytelling: Narratives can be very effective at drawing in an audience and inspiring emotion. 
  • Imagery: Vivid imagery can help a writer evoke a time or place in the audience’s mind, drawing out the emotions associated with them.
  • Emotionally-charged vocabulary: Emotional vocabulary, whether it evokes fear, anger, joy, or security, can inspire those emotions in the audience.
  • Humor: Humor can be used to disarm the audience and help the writer come across as likeable and charismatic.
  • Slogans and repetition: Repeating catchy phrases can help draw your audience in, reinforce a message, and inspire an audience to action. Think of former President Barack Obama’s “ Yes We Can ” speech.

These are just a few examples of ways that writers can use pathos. You might have noticed that many of these strategies are frequently used in speechwriting and in politics. This is no accident; pathos is very effective at rousing the sympathy of an audience and helping a candidate come across as likeable or inspiring.

Process of writing persuasive essays

The process of writing a persuasive essay is similar to that of many other types of essays in that it involves a research stage, an outlining stage, a writing stage, and an editing stage. However, in persuasive writing, the writer typically comes to the table with an argument in mind before the research stage. Evidence is gathered in support of a predetermined position on a topic.

  • Choose a topic

The first step of writing a persuasive essay is choosing a topic to write about. In general, persuasive essays focus on topics that are controversial, meaning there are at least two, if not more, positions on the topic that strongly disagree with one another. Persuasive essays are often written on issues of public importance, such as divisive political or social issues. However, persuasive essays may also be written about art or literature. In any case, the author must be able to take a strong stance on their topic and defend it through a mixture of logical reasoning, hard evidence, and compelling rhetoric.

  • Construct argument

After selecting the topic of the essay, the writer should define their position on the topic. Oftentimes in persuasive writing, the author is motivated to write the paper because they have a strong position on an issue and want to convey it through their essay. In an opinion-editorial, for example, a writer comes to the table with an opinion and sets out to convince their readers of the validity of their opinion. 

This contrasts with other forms of expository writing, such as argumentative writing, in which the writer researches their topic before they formulate their stance on the issue.

Once the writer has formulated their argument, they can start conducting research on the topic. In a persuasive essay, the writer should primarily highlight evidence that supports their position on the topic. However, in order to make a strong, informed argument, the writer must have a thorough understanding of the debate surrounding the topic, including positions that do not align with their own. As a result, it is important for the writer to research both positions and collect evidence that strongly supports their position in the face of counter-arguments.

In a persuasive essay, your goal should be to present the evidence that supports your argument, and only present counter-evidence as a means to address and invalidate counter-arguments. In other forms of essay writing, such as academic papers or argumentative essays, the writer is obligated to consider all evidence and seek an unbiased opinion. In persuasive writing, the writer recognizes their bias, and solely seeks to advance their own position. Furthermore, because of this crucial difference in approach, in a persuasive essay, writers may use some forms of evidence that may not be considered valid in other genres. For example, in a persuasive essay, a writer may use a personal anecdote as supporting evidence. In most academic writing, this would often be considered weak or insubstantial evidence. In persuasive writing, narratives and anecdotal evidence can be an effective tool if used correctly.

  • Organize evidence

After you have your evidence collected, you can start to organize your evidence to support your argument. In order to communicate your argument effectively, the evidence must be laid out logically. As you organize your evidence, it can be helpful to group pieces of evidence into themes or subsections, which you can then use to build supporting claims for your thesis. By the time you have finished organizing your evidence, you should have a strong idea of how you will present your argument.

  • Build outline

Once you’ve got your evidence organized in a logical and compelling progression, you can begin to outline your essay in earnest. A complete outline should contain a draft of your thesis, topic sentences for each body paragraph or section, and evidence organized under each major claim you make throughout the essay. By the time you finish your outline, you should have completely finished gathering and organizing your evidence.

  • Write the essay

After building your outline, you should be ready to start writing in earnest. With a complete and thorough outline, the essay-writing process should mostly consist of connecting evidence and fleshing out sections of your paper with transitions. It is important that your paper has a natural and logical flow and reads clearly. In persuasive writing, your paper may have a serious but somewhat more informal or casual tone than other types of writing. Reading opinion-editorials, magazine essays, and other types of popular nonfiction writing can help you get a sense of the cadence and tone of the genre.

  • Reread, revise, and edit

After you have completed a full draft of your paper, you should always go over your work carefully. First, read your draft aloud to yourself and try to identify any obvious errors and areas where your writing is unclear or confusing. Reword and rephrase these areas to the best of your ability. Pay close attention to the flow of the argument: sometimes during this stage, you may realize that your essay could be structured better and you may have to reorganize sections. After you’ve looked over, revised, and edited your paper thoroughly, pass it off to a friend, colleague, parent, professor, or teaching assistant and have them read it over for you. Having a second set of eyes on your paper can help you identify areas of weakness that you missed, or grammatical errors you were unaware of. In the end, you should have a paper that is tightly-edited and contains few to no grammatical or syntactical errors.

Structure of persuasive essays

In general, persuasive essays follow the structure of a typical expository or argumentative essay: an introduction that includes a thesis, body paragraphs providing evidence, and a conclusion restating the thesis and outlining broader implications. However, in persuasive writing, the author may take some more creative liberties than in other styles of writing. Depending on the target audience and the publication format, the author may use non-traditional paragraph structures and utilize storytelling and narrative. Furthermore, drawing the reader in immediately with a strong hook is ever-important in persuasive writing. 

Introduction to persuasive essays

In the introduction of a persuasive essay, the writer’s primary goal is to introduce the topic of the essay, state their thesis, and, importantly, draw the reader in. 

In life and in writing, first impressions are important. The hook — the first one or two sentences of an essay — serves two primary purposes: to introduce the reader to the topic of the essay and to grab their attention and compel them to read on.

In a traditional expository essay, the hook will typically make an assertive claim related to, but not explicitly stating, the paper’s thesis. In a persuasive essay, the writer may be a little more creative with their hook. Some persuasive essays begin with a compelling quote. Others begin with a brief story, a vivid description, or a metaphor. Some writers may begin with a statistic or piece of information that illustrates an important point about the topic they are writing about.

In any case, the hook must always clearly introduce the topic of the essay. A hook that is not directly related to the topic or thesis of an essay will ultimately distract, and even confuse the reader. In order to write a compelling essay, the writer should always strive for clarity above all else.

After the hook, the writer will begin to elaborate on the topic, providing background information that is necessary to fully comprehend the topic they are writing about. Sometimes referred to as the exigence, this section of the introduction is where the writer states their reason for writing.

For example, in an essay discussing the implications of a rise in crime, the writer may use this section of the introduction to briefly illustrate the rise in crime and explain why this is an issue worth discussing.

Importantly, the writer should not start providing supporting evidence for their thesis and should be careful not to go into too much detail on the topic. Rather, this section is meant as a general introduction to the issue at hand.

The thesis statement is the heart of a persuasive essay. A thesis is an arguable statement on a given topic, defined in Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary as “a position or proposition that a person (such as a candidate for scholastic honors) advances and offers to maintain by argument.” 

The thesis should make a specific, defensible, and debatable claim about an issue that will be defended through the revelation of evidence throughout the essay. A thesis statement is neither a statement of fact, nor is it an opinion. Rather, it combines these two elements, such that it is a statement of a position that can be supported by evidence. 

The thesis should also telegraph how the writer intends to present and defend their argument in the rest of the paper. It should not list evidence. However, a reader should be able to read your thesis statement and have a sense of the types of evidence that you will present throughout the paper.

Body of persuasive essays

In the body of a persuasive essay, the writer should present their evidence clearly and systematically. Each body paragraph should flow logically into the next, presenting evidence in such a manner that the reader can easily understand the argument as it unfolds. In a persuasive essay, the writer intends to persuade the reader to adopt a position, so evidence should be carefully selected and presented to the reader in order to convince them of the writer’s thesis.

  • Topic Sentence

Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that makes a claim supporting the thesis. For each of these claims, the evidence will be laid out throughout the rest of the paragraph. Each claim should have a logical connection to the thesis and introduce new evidence supporting the paper’s overall argument. 

The bulk of each body paragraph should consist of evidence that supports the claim made in your topic sentence. The strongest essays present their supporting evidence in a logical order with smooth transitions. In persuasive essays, you can use a variety of types of evidence, including both hard, research-based evidence, and soft evidence, including anecdotal evidence, narrative, metaphor, and logical reasoning. All of the evidence in a paragraph should reinforce the claim made in the topic sentence. All evidence should also clearly support the thesis.

Conclusion to persuasive essays

At the very end, the conclusion should reframe the thesis in the context of the evidence provided throughout the paper. The writer should never present new evidence in the conclusion. Rather, the conclusion is an opportunity to discuss and reconsider the main points made throughout the paper. It is a space to draw new conclusions and point to the big-picture implications of their argument and the evidence provided throughout.

In conclusion

The process of writing persuasive essays is not unlike that of many other essay styles, but it does differ in key ways. Namely, the emphasis on persuasion allows writers to be slightly more creative than other forms of essay writing: they can use various rhetorical techniques to manipulate their audience into adopting a viewpoint. A narrative essay is one that tells a story. This is usually a story about a personal experience you had, but it may also be an imaginative exploration of something you have not experienced.

Since elementary school, I have always favored subjects like science and math over the humanities. My instinct was always to think of these subjects as more solid and serious than classes like English. If there was no right answer, I thought, why bother? Before I entered the classroom, I was skeptical. I waited outside with the other students and wondered what exactly philosophy would involve—I really had no idea. I imagined something pretty abstract: long, stilted conversations pondering the meaning of life. But what I got was something quite different.

A young man in jeans, Mr. Jones—“but you can call me Rob”—was far from the white-haired, buttoned-up old man I had half-expected. And rather than pulling us into pedantic arguments about obscure philosophical points, Rob engaged us on our level. To talk free will, we looked at our own choices. To talk ethics, we looked at dilemmas we had faced ourselves. By the end of class, I’d discovered that questions with no right answer can turn out to be the most interesting ones.

I learned that if I let go of my preconceptions, I can actually get a lot out of subjects I was previously dismissive of. The class taught me—in more ways than one—to look at things with an open mind.

A descriptive essay provides a detailed sensory description of something. Like narrative essays, they allow you to be more creative than most academic writing, but they are more tightly focused than narrative essays. You might describe a specific place or object, rather than telling a whole story.

Descriptive essays test your ability to use language creatively, making striking word choices to convey a memorable picture of what you’re describing.

A descriptive essay can be quite loosely structured, though it should usually begin by introducing the object of your description and end by drawing an overall picture of it. The important thing is to use careful word choices and figurative language to create an original description of your object.

On Sunday afternoons I like to spend my time in the garden behind my house. The introduction of a rhetorical analysis presents the text, some background information, and your thesis statement; the body comprises the analysis itself; and the conclusion wraps up your analysis of the text, emphasizing its relevance to broader concerns.

The example below is from a rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech . Mouse over it to learn more.

King’s speech is infused with prophetic language throughout. Even before the famous “dream” part of the speech, King’s language consistently strikes a prophetic tone. He refers to the Lincoln Memorial as a “hallowed spot” and speaks of rising “from the dark and desolate valley of segregation” to “make justice a reality for all of God’s children.” The assumption of this prophetic voice constitutes the text’s strongest ethical appeal; after linking himself with political figures like Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, King’s ethos adopts a distinctly religious tone, recalling Biblical prophets and preachers of change from across history. This adds significant force to his words; standing before an audience of hundreds of thousands, he states not just what the future should be, but what it will be: “The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.” This warning is almost apocalyptic in tone, though it concludes with the positive image of the “bright day of justice.” The power of King’s rhetoric thus stems not only from the pathos of his vision of a brighter future, but from the ethos of the prophetic voice he adopts in expressing this vision.

Literary analysis

A literary analysis essay presents a close reading of a work of literature—e.g. a poem or novel—to explore the choices made by the author and how they help to convey the text’s theme. It is not simply a book report or a review, but an in-depth interpretation of the text.

Literary analysis looks at things like setting, characters, themes, and figurative language. The goal is to closely analyze what the author conveys and how.

The introduction of a literary analysis essay presents the text and background, and provides your thesis statement; the body consists of close readings of the text with quotations and analysis in support of your argument; and the conclusion emphasizes what your approach tells us about the text.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is often read as a crude cautionary tale about the dangers of scientific advancement unrestrained by ethical considerations. In this reading, protagonist Victor Frankenstein is a stable representation of the callous ambition of modern science throughout the novel. This essay, however, argues that far from providing a stable image of the character, Shelley uses shifting narrative perspectives to portray Frankenstein in an increasingly negative light as the novel goes on. While he initially appears to be a naive but sympathetic idealist, after the creature’s narrative Frankenstein begins to resemble—even in his own telling—the thoughtlessly cruel figure the creature represents him as. This essay begins by exploring the positive portrayal of Frankenstein in the first volume, then moves on to the creature’s perception of him, and finally discusses the third volume’s narrative shift toward viewing Frankenstein as the creature views him.

At high school and in composition classes at university, you’ll often be told to write a specific type of essay , but you might also just be given prompts.

Look for keywords in these prompts that suggest a certain approach: The word “explain” suggests you should write an expository essay , while the word “describe” implies a descriptive essay . An argumentative essay might be prompted with the word “assess” or “argue.”

The vast majority of essays written at university are some sort of argumentative essay . Almost all academic writing involves building up an argument, though other types of essay might be assigned in composition classes.

Essays can present arguments about all kinds of different topics. For example:

  • In a literary analysis essay, you might make an argument for a specific interpretation of a text
  • In a history essay, you might present an argument for the importance of a particular event
  • In a politics essay, you might argue for the validity of a certain political theory

An argumentative essay tends to be a longer essay involving independent research, and aims to make an original argument about a topic. Its thesis statement makes a contentious claim that must be supported in an objective, evidence-based way.

An expository essay also aims to be objective, but it doesn’t have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way. Expository essays are often shorter assignments and rely less on research.

The key difference is that a narrative essay is designed to tell a complete story, while a descriptive essay is meant to convey an intense description of a particular place, object, or concept.

Narrative and descriptive essays both allow you to write more personally and creatively than other kinds of essays , and similar writing skills can apply to both.

Persuasive Speech Writing Examples

Many persuasive speeches are political in nature, often addressing subjects like human rights. Here are some of history’s most well-known persuasive writing examples in the form of speeches.

Newspaper editors or publishers use editorials to share their personal opinions. Noted politicians, experts, or pundits may also offer their opinions on behalf of the editors or publishers. Here are a couple of older well-known editorials, along with a selection from current newspapers.

Sample lines: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.”

What’s the Matter With Kansas? (1896)

Sample lines: “Oh, this IS a state to be proud of! We are a people who can hold up our heads! The Booster Isn’t Perfect, But Still Can Help Against COVID (The Washington Post)

Sample lines: “The booster shots are still free, readily available and work better than the previous boosters even as the virus evolves. Much still needs to be done to build better vaccines that protect longer and against more variants, including those that might emerge in the future. But it is worth grabbing the booster that exists today, the jab being a small price for any measure that can help keep COVID at bay.”

If We Want Wildlife To Thrive in L.A., We Have To Share Our Neighborhoods With Them (Los Angeles Times)

Sample lines: “If there are no corridors for wildlife movement and if excessive excavation of dirt to build bigger, taller houses erodes the slope of a hillside, then we are slowly destroying wildlife habitat. For those people fretting about what this will do to their property values—isn’t open space, trees, and wildlife an amenity in these communities?”   

Persuasive Review Writing Examples

Book or movie reviews are more great persuasive writing examples. Look for those written by professionals for the strongest arguments and writing styles. Here are reviews of some popular books and movies by well-known critics to use as samples.

The Great Gatsby (The Chicago Tribune, 1925)

Sample lines: “What ails it, fundamentally, is the plain fact that it is simply a story—that Fitzgerald seems to be far more interested in maintaining its suspense than in getting under the skins of its people. It is not that they are false: It is that they are taken too much for granted. Only Gatsby himself genuinely lives and breathes. The rest are mere marionettes—often astonishingly lifelike, but nevertheless not quite alive.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (The Washington Post, 1999)

Sample lines: “Obviously, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone should make any modern 11-year-old a very happy reader. The novel moves quickly, packs in everything from a boa constrictor that winks to a melancholy Zen-spouting centaur to an owl postal system, and ends with a scary surprise. Yet it is, essentially, a light-hearted thriller, interrupted by occasional seriousness (the implications of Harry’s miserable childhood, a moral about the power of love).”

Twilight (The Telegraph, 2009)

Sample lines: “No secret, of course, at whom this book is aimed, and no doubt, either, that it has hit its mark. The four Twilight novels are not so much enjoyed, as devoured, by legions of young female fans worldwide. That’s not to say boys can’t enjoy these books; it’s just that the pages of heart-searching dialogue between Edward and Bella may prove too long on chat and too short on action for the average male reader.”

To Kill a Mockingbird (Time, 1960)

Sample lines: “Author Lee, 34, an Alabaman, has written her first novel with all of the tactile brilliance and none of the preciosity generally supposed to be standard swamp-warfare issue for Southern writers. The novel is an account of an awakening to good and evil, and a faint catechistic flavor may have been inevitable. But it is faint indeed; novelist Lee’s prose has an edge that cuts through cant, and she teaches the reader an astonishing number of useful truths about little girls and about Southern life.”

The Diary of Anne Frank (The New York Times, 1952)

Sample lines: “And this quality brings it home to any family in the world today. Just as the Franks lived in momentary fear of the Gestapo’s knock on their hidden door, so every family today lives in fear of the knock of war. Anne’s diary is a great affirmative answer to the life-question of today, for she shows how ordinary people, within this ordeal, consistently hold to the greater human values.”

The purpose of persuasion in writing is to convince, motivate, or move readers toward a certain point of view, or opinion. The act of trying to persuade automatically implies more than one opinion on the subject can be argued.

The idea of an argument often conjures up images of two people yelling and screaming in anger. In writing, however, an argument is very different. An argument is a reasoned opinion supported and explained by evidence. To argue in writing is to advance knowledge and ideas in a positive way. Written arguments often fail when they employ ranting rather than reasoning. While your readers may not always agree with your argument, aim to persuade them to respect and consider your thesis/opinion as a valid one.

Essay Contest Call for Submissions: Solving the Military Recruiting Crisis

Update: We’re thrilled to announce that the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) has joined the Modern War Institute in organizing this essay contest and evaluating submissions. In addition to the top essays being published by the Modern War Institute, authors of the best submissions will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas with TRADOC senior leaders. TRADOC will also review all essays to evaluate their contributions to resolving the military recruiting crisis.

Essay requirements and the submission deadline remain the same, and authors who have already submitted their entries should not resubmit.

“Credible defense begins with our ability to steadily attract and retain the men and women who would assume the initial burden of a fast breaking war.” More than forty years ago, Vice Admiral Robert B. Pirie, Jr. eloquently described why recruiting was a national security issue.

This year, the Army will again fail to meet recruiting goals after falling fifteen thousand short last year. Likewise, the Navy anticipates falling six thousand sailors short of its target. The Air Force has issues too , with Secretary Frank Kendall acknowledging in March that his service would fall 10 percent short this year. Except for the two smallest services—the Marine Corps and Space Force—the United States’ armed forces continue to face recruiting woes.

With this serious issue as a backdrop, the Modern War Institute and the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) are launching an essay contest that seeks to explore the problem and identify solutions that could help the services address it.

Essay Prompt

Essays must answer the following prompt: What novel approaches can the United States military employ to solve the recruiting crisis?

This topic is broad. Essays might address new incentives, lessons from other countries or uniformed services, the impact of telework, messaging and marketing, how to resolve tensions created by years of recruiting shortfalls, ideas from labor economics or other academic fields, historical perspectives on recruiting challenges and solutions, or other ideas related to recruiting. Essays can take any form, to include speculative fiction. However, because of length limits, we strongly encourage authors to clearly articulate one idea or concept in their responses to the prompt.

Your ideas will inform internal conversations and workshops in support of the Modern War Institute’s human resources research theme. Based on the ideas presented in their essays, authors may be invited to contribute to future MWI publications or events on this topic.

Eligibility

  • Essays will be accepted from any person in any field, and submissions from non-US participants are welcomed.
  • Up to two people may coauthor an essay entry.
  • Participants may submit only one entry to the competition.
  • Essays must be original, unpublished, and not subject to publication elsewhere.
  • Essays will not exceed 1,500 words.
  • Use the standard submission guidelines for the Modern War Institute.
  • Email your entry to [email protected] with “ Recruiting Essay Competition ” in the subject line. Once submitted, no edits, corrections, or changes are allowed.
  • Submission deadline: essays will be accepted until 11:59 PM EDT on September 3, 2023.

Selection Process

Submissions will be reviewed and evaluated by a team from the Modern War Institute and TRADOC. Submissions will be assessed based on how well and creatively they address the topic of the contest and provoke further thought and conversation, as well as their suitability for publication by the Modern War Institute (e.g., style, sources, accessibility, etc.). Evaluation criteria include:

  • Does the essay clearly define a problem and present a solution?
  • Does the essay show thoughtful analysis?
  • Does the essay inject new provocative thinking or address areas where there needs to be more discussion?
  • Does the essay demonstrate a unique approach or improve current initiatives?
  • Does the essay take lessons from history and apply them to today’s challenges?
  • Is the essay logically organized, well written, and persuasive?

Winning Submissions

The top three essays will be announced publicly and will be published by the Modern War Institute. Depending on the evaluation of the Modern War Institute editorial team, revisions may be required before publication.

Additionally, the authors of the top submissions with senior leaders from TRADOC and the US Army’s Recruiting Command. Furthermore, TRADOC will review all essays to support the Army’s recruiting efforts.

Although I am not much of an essay writer, perhaps the thesis, etc.. that I provide below will allow someone — who is a decent essay writer — to develop and provide a good essay for this competition. Here goes:

First, the essay prompt/question: "What novel approaches can the United States military employ to solve the recruiting crisis?"

Next, the proposed answer to this such essay prompt/question:

In order for the United States military to solve its current recruiting problems, the United States military must become able — in some way, shape or form — to better assure potential military recruits — and their families and friends — that they (these potential military recruits) will now (a) be less likely to be used to prosecute unnecessary, improper, ill-advised and/or ill-conceived and executed engagements and wars and, thus, will now (b) be less likely to find themselves in a position to be badly injured and/or killed in such unnecessary, improper, ill-advised, etc., engagements and wars.

(Herein to note that this such thesis and approach takes direct aim at the our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan of late and, thus, potentially gets directly to the/a true "root cause" of our current recruiting problems?)

It is not so much the fact that potential military recruits — and their families and friends — are unlikely to join/want their children and friends to join because they understand that these children and/or friends might get seriously injured and/or kill while engaged in our military profession.

Rather it is the fact that these such potential military recruits — and their families and friends — are unlikely to join/want their children and friends to join because they see the trend (think Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.) wherein these such injuries and deaths were/are incurred in what now is considered to be unnecessary, improper, ill-advised and/or ill-conceived and executed engagements and wars.

(Herein, it will be important to address the "common nature" of these such unnecessary, improper, Ill-advised, etc., engagements and wars — this being — that they were ultimately undertaken to achieve "revolutionary" political, economic, social and value "change" in the states and societies of the world — that is — states and societies in the world who are most different from ultra-modern "us.")

Bottom Line Thought — Based on the Above:

Today's recruiting problems, thus I believe, can be traced to the fact that our potential military recruits — and their families and friends — :

a. Do not agree with the "transformative" political objective of the United States post-the Old Cold War and/or:

b. Do not agree with the manner (war; military engagement) in which the U.S. has chosen to pursue this such — "transformative" — post-Cold War political objective.

B.C I believe after reading this long-winded comment. That you have a problem with Americas terrible policy and foreign policy decisions. You of course would be correct. For the same reasons they can't figure out foreign policy, our leaders can't figure out Retention and Recruitment problems. In both cases the American people are becoming aware that little of the decisions being made are done to benefit the country as a whole. Instead, they are to line the pockets of certain individuals and companies. For example, the Ukraine conflict, Billions of taxpayer dollars for no strategic goal or benefit. This coming off the back side of 20 years of Iraq and Afghanistan which obviously served little purpose at this point. Where is Kurdistan? Was Dick Chaney ever charged? There are many more such examples. But to your original point, I would believe that contest submissions would need to limit the material to only what the military itself could do to correct the recruitment shortfalls.

So, when it is time to combat, they will retreat with the excuse that I got in to get the college, not to go to war. My father (RIP) lived this cluster, and it was ridiculous seen young men and women played the Army. My son and I did active duty, did the required services, and every time that we hear the national anthem "of the land of the brave", we meant it. We never embrace college free benefits to defend our nation. and money

Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Goal 2 is about creating a world free of hunger by 2030.The global issue of hunger and food insecurity has shown an alarming increase since 2015, a trend exacerbated by a combination of factors including the pandemic, conflict, climate change, and deepening inequalities.

By 2022, approximately 735 million people – or 9.2% of the world’s population – found themselves in a state of chronic hunger – a staggering rise compared to 2019. This data underscores the severity of the situation, revealing a growing crisis.

In addition, an estimated 2.4 billion people faced moderate to severe food insecurity in 2022. This classification signifies their lack of access to sufficient nourishment. This number escalated by an alarming 391 million people compared to 2019.

The persistent surge in hunger and food insecurity, fueled by a complex interplay of factors, demands immediate attention and coordinated global efforts to alleviate this critical humanitarian challenge.

Extreme hunger and malnutrition remains a barrier to sustainable development and creates a trap from which people cannot easily escape. Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive individuals, who are more prone to disease and thus often unable to earn more and improve their livelihoods.

2 billion people in the world do not have reg- ular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. In 2022, 148 million children had stunted growth and 45 million children under the age of 5 were affected by wasting.

How many people are hungry?

It is projected that more than 600 million people worldwide will be facing hunger in 2030, highlighting the immense challenge of achieving the zero hunger target.

People experiencing moderate food insecurity are typically unable to eat a healthy, balanced diet on a regular basis because of income or other resource constraints.

Why are there so many hungry people?

Shockingly, the world is back at hunger levels not seen since 2005, and food prices remain higher in more countries than in the period 2015–2019. Along with conflict, climate shocks, and rising cost of living, civil insecurity and declining food production have all contributed to food scarcity and high food prices.

Investment in the agriculture sector is critical for reducing hunger and poverty, improving food security, creating employment and building resilience to disasters and shocks.

Why should I care?

We all want our families to have enough food to eat what is safe and nutritious. A world with zero hunger can positively impact our economies, health, education, equality and social development.

It’s a key piece of building a better future for everyone. Additionally, with hunger limiting human development, we will not be able to achieve the other sustainable development goals such as education, health and gender equality.

How can we achieve Zero Hunger?

Food security requires a multi-dimensional approach – from social protection to safeguard safe and nutritious food especially for children to transforming food systems to achieve a more inclusive and sustainable world. There will need to be investments in rural and urban areas and in social protection so poor people have access to food and can improve their livelihoods.

What can we do to help?

You can make changes in your own life—at home, at work and in the community—by supporting local farmers or markets and making sustainable food choices, supporting good nutrition for all, and fighting food waste.

You can also use your power as a consumer and voter, demanding businesses and governments make the choices and changes that will make Zero Hunger a reality. Join the conversation, whether on social media platforms or in your local communities.

Goal 2 targets.

  • Despite global efforts, in 2022, an estimated 45 million children under the age of 5 suffered from wasting, 148 million had stunted growth and 37 million were overweight. A fundamental shift in trajectory is needed to achieve the 2030 nutrition targets.
  • To achieve zero hunger by 2030, urgent coordinated action and policy solutions are imperative to address entrenched inequalities, transform food systems, invest in sustainable agricultural practices, and reduce and mitigate the impact of conflict and the pandemic on global nutrition and food security.

2.1 By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.

2.2 By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older persons.

2.3 By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

2.4 By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

2.5 By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds, cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their related wild species, including through soundly managed and diversified seed and plant banks at the national, regional and international levels, and promote access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge, as internationally agreed.

2.A Increase investment, including through enhanced international cooperation, in rural infrastructure, agricultural research and extension services, technology development and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural productive capacity in developing countries, in particular least developed countries.

2.B Correct and prevent trade restrictions and distortions in world agricultural markets, including through the parallel elimination of all forms of agricultural export subsidies and all export measures with equivalent effect, in accordance with the mandate of the Doha Development Round.

2.C Adopt measures to ensure the proper functioning of food commodity markets and their derivatives and facilitate timely access to market information, including on food reserves, in order to help limit extreme food price volatility.
