Northern Panhandle Now Red All Over: Registered Republicans Outnumber Democrats in All 6 Counties

WHEELING — All six Northern Panhandle counties now boast more registered Republican voters than registered Democrats, following a trend happening across West Virginia.

But it’s not necessarily that Democrats are switching their politics to Republican, report county clerks. They say more and more Independent non-party voters are opting to register Republican.

As of July 31, Republicans outnumber Democrats in 42 of West Virginia’s 55 counties, according to data compiled by the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office.

The situation has reversed from just eight years ago in July 2016, when Democrats were listed as having the edge in 42 counties.

Brooke and Wetzel counties had been the last two Democratic holdouts in the Northern Panhandle until just before the May 5 primary election this year. Voter registrations in March and April flipped the majorities in both counties by a narrow margin.

Brooke County currently is listed as having 5,443 Republicans, 5,357 Democrats and 3,303 registered with no party affiliation.

In Wetzel County, Republicans now outnumber Democrats 3,748 to 3,608, and there are 1,817 non-party voters, according to July 31 numbers.

Registrations have been trending Republican for quite some time, both locally and across the state, according to Brooke County Clerk Kimberly Barbetta. But what has changed in Brooke County is that a larger number of prior Independents without party affiliation have changed their registration to Republican, she explained.

“West Virginia has been more of a red state than a blue state,” Barbetta said. “But what happened here is that the Republicans voted earlier this year to close their primary election (beginning in 2026).”

Independents have been able to request a Republican ballot in recent primary elections, but that is no longer going to be allowed.

“They (Republicans) said if you are an Independent, you are not a true Republican and you don’t get to vote their ballot. There were Independent voters who wanted to make sure they could still vote (the Republican ballot),” Barbetta continued.

Wetzel County Clerk Jessica Davis indicated it was the same situation in that county.

“Based on what I’ve seen, the trend was to be an Independent with non-party affiliation,” she explained. “Right before the primary is when they made the switch. They came in, said they were ready for changes and went to the other side.

“We had a good bit ‘in the middle,’ but we’re seeing more and more going over to the Republican side.”

– Hancock County reports having 8,028 Republicans registered, and 6,253 Democrats. There are 4,404 there not affiliated with a party.

– Marshall County numbers show 8,329 Republicans and 6,134 Democrats. Non-party affiliations total 4,995.

– Ohio County lists 10,545 Republicans, 9,043 Democrats and 6,109 with no party affiliation.’

– Tyler County has 3,087 Republicans and 1,059 Democrats, with 1,307 having no party affiliation.

West Virginia’s largest county, Kanawha County, continues to be nearly split down the middle in terms of voter registration. The county reports 42,348 Democrats and 42,261 Democrats. Non-party affiliations there total 30,599.

In Monongalia County, there are 22,759 Democrats registered, as well as 21,031 Republicans. Non-party voter registered are listed at 17,866.

D&E welcomes Tammarine

ELKINS — Sydney Tammarine joins the Davis & Elkins College faculty as Assistant Professor of English, Creative Writing. She brings along nearly a decade of teaching experience and writing consultancy.

Tammarine earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from Otterbein University, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2013. She went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Hollins University in 2018. During and following her post-graduate education, Tammarine instructed in multiple professorial roles on the topics of college preparation, composition and rhetoric, and multi-genre creative writing, among others.

“I am excited to join the Davis & Elkins College community,” said Tammarine. “In many ways, I feel like I am returning home: to the Appalachian Mountains and to a vibrant small college setting like the one where I discovered my own love of writing. I am so impressed by the creativity and energy of D&E’s students and faculty, and I look forward to writing and learning alongside them this fall.”

Similar to her excellence and abundance in teaching, Tammarine’s publications have been featured in such notable journals as “Ploughshares” and “The Kenyon Review” in 2020 and 2023, respectively. Her poetry translations chapbook “Pavilion of the Names and Other Poems/Pabellón de los nombres y otros poemas” is also of significant note. Tammarine has nearly a dozen additional works in relevant journals and through her future manuscripts.

“Professor Tammarine has extensive teaching experience, offering courses in Poetry, Creative Writing and Communication in colleges and universities from Virginia to New Mexico,” said Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Rob Phillips. “Her publications are equally diverse and include poetry translations, creative non-fiction pieces and two manuscripts in preparation.”

Tammarine holds 10 separate awards and grants for her excellence as both student and teacher and has been invited to esteemed panels, workshops and readings since 2015. She has previously served at universities on various councils and committees, in mentorship roles, and as faculty sponsor.

Family contracting business finds new home in wellsburg.

creative writing jobs virginia

Warren Scott A NEW HOME — The Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the owners and staff of Saints Roofing and Construction to their new location at 1483 Commerce St. (state Route 2). Among those on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony were, from left, Charles Bell; Barry Hicks III, project manager for the family-run business; co-owners Ruth and Barry Hicks; Chamber President Dan Otto; Chamber Secretary Tresa Thomas; Brandy Puskarich; and Debbie Puskarich.

WELLSBURG — The owners of a family-run contracting business have found a new home in the city along state Route 2 and hope to help many area residents improve the appearance and durability of their own homes.

Members of the Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce welcomed Barry and Ruth Hicks, owners of Saints Roofing and Construction, and their staff to their new location at 1483 Commerce St.

The contracting business offers roof repair and replacement, siding installation, box gutter repair and removal and other services to residential and commercial customers.

A native of Kentucky, Barry has lived in the Tri-State Area for several years and run the contracting business with his wife, Ruth, a Cadiz native and graduate of Jewett-Scio High School, in Bridgeville, Pa., and Wheeling previously.

Barry, who started working in home repair at the age of 16, said they were no strangers to Wellsburg, having worked on a lot of homes there.

“We prayed about it and this is where the Lord wanted us,” he said.

Ruth added their new location offers an ideal center point from which to serve customers in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The two added they eagerly anticipated completion of the new Ohio River bridge linking state Route 2 in Brooke County to state Route 7 in Jefferson County.

They also welcomed a headquarters with space to display examples of the wide range of projects they have completed.

During a recent open house, chamber members surveyed a wall filled with large photos showing the array of work they have done.

With 35 years of experience in home repair, Barry is aided by Ruth, who serves as office manager; general manager Dean Craft and project manager Barry Hicks III; and about 16 crew members.

In addition to roofing, siding and gutters, they have coated chimneys and repaired flashing to protect homes from rain and other outside elements and, when practical and beneficial, removed and capped chimneys.

They also have provided inspection services required when filing an insurance claim for damages and installed skylights and solar panels.

Barry said the latter has been of interest primarily to commercial enterprises but has expanded more recently to residential customers.

He said whatever the structure, solar panels can result in great savings in heating costs, offering a return on their investment five to 10 years from their installation.

They also are able to work with customers to secure adequate financing and participate in the GAF Master Elite Gold Pledge Warranty program, offering a 50-year warranty on materials provided through the shingle manufacturer and a 25-year warranty on the craftsmanship.

Barry noted the warranties are transferable to a new owner should the structure be sold.

He and Ruth said they try to form a relationship with their customers, building trust that will carry over to potential future projects.

They said their Christian faith has played a large role in their business and its development.

Barry said the business’ name was inspired by its biblical meaning, while its logo’s colors, red, blue and white, represent the blood shed by Christ, the blue skies of Heaven and the path to purity Christians are called to walk.

Information about Saints Roofing and Construction can be found at its website, saintsroofingandconstruction.com, and Facebook page. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (304) 780-7902.

Rebuttal 3 for ‘trump is the right man’.

creative writing jobs virginia

Letter to the Editor (Graphic Illustration/MetroCreative)

Rebuttal 2 left off with me establishing my expertise protecting classified documents and describing two internet pictures I would use to refute a writer’s conspiracy theory claims.

The first picture describes a bathroom with 30 boxes of documents and a toilet. We know that bathroom doors lock only from the inside. Missing from the pictures was a Secret Service agent sitting on the toilet 24/7/365 reading a novel or Trump’s favorite Playboy magazine with Karen McDougal, hush money girl #1, centerfold.

He could only leave if Trump came to (relieve himself). This is not adequate document security. Pictures of two other rooms with documents were even worse. Did the Secret Service personnel guarding Trump have top secret clearances? What about the Trump employees? One of them could have been a Cuban/Russian spy. The Bedminster Club employed an illegal alien before a journalist outed him after hearing Trump brag about border wall effectiveness. What about Melania, Trump children, guests for tea or parties, etc. Were all of these people vetted for top secret documents? I doubt it. The writer should investigate these items before pushing conspiracy theories, but then he does not have experience with classified documents.

It is common knowledge Trump showed documents with nuclear submarine secrets to an Australian industrialist and other classified documents to a Bedminster Club member. Did these people have the necessary security clearance? What was their need to know? This is just Trump the narcissistic moron, wanting people to know he is more important than they are because he has access to important documents.

The second picture shows approximately seven documents arranged on the floor showing what was found. The FBI came with place markers showing document numbers, etc. from the National Archives Document List that they placed in each box as they found the documents. They found many more documents than expected. Writer missed mentioning another conspiracy theory that documents mentioned in the paragraph above were planted by the FBI. The writer would have to prove the document numbers for the floor items and the National Archives List did not match. I could cite more examples.

People read these things for information, not amusement.

For the classified documents indictment, I maintain Trump is guilty in the court of public opinion.

Gregory Cigal
