Be Prepared for a Day at the Beach

Millions of people in the U.S. have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are resuming normal activities like going to the beach without a mask.(1)

Be prepared for a day at the beach. Take steps to protect your skin and eyes from the sun , avoid heat-related illness , and stay healthy and safe during your visit.

Know Before You Go

A beachy keen day can turn into anything if you aren’t prepared. Here are some things you should know before you go to the beach.

How to Swim in the Ocean

Swimming in the ocean isn’t like swimming in a pool. Waves, currents, and winds can drain your energy and strength. Rough surf and rip currents are especially dangerous if you aren’t already a strong swimmer and don’t know how to escape them .

Also, consider wearing a life jacket. Properly fitted US Coast Guard-approved life jackets add an extra layer of protection, particularly if you’re not a strong swimmer.

Check the local beach forecast before you leave for the beach and talk to the lifeguard when you get there. If you choose to swim at a beach without a lifeguard, never swim alone. Go with a friend and take a cell phone so that you’re prepared to call 911 for help.(2)

What the Warning Flags Mean

Read the beach safety signs before stepping onto the beach. Once on the beach, look for beach warning flags. They are often posted on or near a lifeguard’s stand. A green flag tells you water conditions are good with a minimal level of risk. The other colors can mean different things depending on the beach .

Water Quality

Germs found in the water and sand (swim area) often come from human or animal feces (poop). Before you plan your visit, check online to find out if the swim area is currently monitored, is under advisory, or has been closed for health or safety reasons. Water contaminated with germs can make you sick if you swallow it. It can also cause an infection if you get into the water with an open cut or wound.(3)

Stay Out of Water with a Bloom

Algae and cyanobacteria (sometimes called blue-green algae) are simple, plant-like organisms that live in the water. Sometimes they rapidly grow out of control, or “bloom”. These blooms can sometimes produce toxins (poisons) that can make people and animals sick. Blooms can look like foam, scum, paint, or mats on the surface of the water and can be different colors. The types of blooms can differ by location. For example, a common type in the Gulf of Mexico is called Karenja brevis red tide.

Before going to the beach learn tips to help you spot harmful algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

Check for local and state swimming advisories and water quality notices online or near the water before visiting the beach or any other body of water. Follow advisories to reduce your chances of getting sick.

Practice Sun Safety

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. Take steps to protect your skin from sun damage and sunburn which can increase your risk for skin cancer.

You can reduce your risk of sun damage and skin cancer by staying in the shade under an umbrella, tree, or another shelter. Your best bet to protect your skin is to use sunscreen or wear protective clothing when you’re outside—even when you’re in the shade.

When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts, which can provide protection from UV rays. If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, try to wear a T-shirt or a beach cover-up. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one, and darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors.

For the most protection, wear a hat that has a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the back of your neck. If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that covers those areas, using sunscreen, or staying in the shade.

Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses work best because they block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.

Put on broad-spectrum  sunscreen  that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher before you go outside.

Don’t forget to put a thick layer on all exposed skin. Get help for hard-to-reach places like your back. And remember, sunscreen wears off. Put it on again if you stay out in the sun for more than 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

#PrepYourHealth for Tsunamis

The beach is a dangerous place to be during a tsunami . Tsunamis do not occur very often. And most that do occur are small and nondestructive. But it’s still a good idea to prepare and know the warnings signs.(8)

A tsunami can strike any U.S. coast, but the hazard is greatest for communities near geologic subduction zones, where large earthquakes can occur. Find out if your beach destination is in a  tsunami hazard zone or evacuation zone , and what routes to take in the event of an evacuation.(9)

There are two types of tsunami warnings:

  • An official tsunami warning is broadcast through local radio and television, outdoor sirens, Wireless Emergency Alerts, weather radio, and NOAA websites .
  • Natural tsunami warnings include strong or long earthquakes, a roar (like a train or an airplane) from the ocean, and unusual ocean behavior, such as water receding (or moving away) from the coast. A natural warning may be the first, best, and only warning that a tsunami is on its way.(10)

You may not get both warnings. It’s important to know the differences and respond right away to whichever you get first. Seconds can make all the difference so act immediately.

Move to a safe place away from the water. Get to high ground and as far inland as you can. Follow instructions from local officials. Never go down to or stay on the beach to watch a tsunami.

Stay informed and stay put until local authorities tell you it’s safe.

Description of a beach.

Summer is the perfect time for individuals to visit and enjoy the marvelous scenes along the coast. In addition, the feelings and experiences felt on the beach during the summer are always fantastic. Several sceneries and experiences are seen and felt at the beach during summer. These include; the plantation along the beach and inside the sea, the animals, the waters, and the people found on the beach.

The beach appears to be alive and joyful with the presence of the natural vegetation. There are evergreen plantations both along and inside the beach. Images of buoyant seaweeds can be seen along the shore. Palms trees are seen to stand tall along the beach, dancing to the tune of the breeze emanating from the waters of the sea.

The sea grapes and the sea oats are also observed gathered in clusters in the sea next to the shore. Their colored flowers are splendid and brighten at the shining of the summer sun. The sweet scent of the flower grapes sends a signal to the world about the hope brought by nature.

The atmosphere is fully intensified by the aroma produced by the buoyant sea flowers. In addition, from afar, images of leafless trees are also observed. The perfect combination of the vegetation along the beach and inside the sea displays the beauty of nature to the highest peak.

It mesmerizes the eyes to gaze at the beautiful creatures that hover all over the beach and on the deep-sea waters. There are sights of beautiful birds that fly all over the dry shoreland and over the seawaters. Their colored feathers brightened the sea with a marvelous appearance at their illumination by the sun’s rays.

There are varieties of birds that are in the vicinity. For instance, there are pelicans and seagulls. Pelicans are seen hovering over the sand, singing sweet melodies that make the atmosphere at the beach vibrant. The seagulls are also observed to be flying over the seawater in small groups. Some of the birds are gathered in groups spreading the wings that cloaked a soft shadow on the gentle water ripples.

Next to the shore, there are sea turtles that seem to enjoy the summer heat from the sun. Their eggs are also seen to be exposed on the sand by the children that play on the shoreline. Bees are seen flying from one flower to another over the sea grapes. The humming of the bees as they gather nectar from the sea flowers attracts insect-eating birds.

Large crowds are observed all over the seashore. These people come to enjoy themselves on the beach at this period of the year. In the sea, people of all ages and sexes are seen swimming and playing with the cool seawater. The scorching heat from the summer sun is felt on the forehead of all individuals.

This makes the people chill themselves in the cool waters of the sea. The children are seen playing beach ball on the shoreline. Some children are also seen pelt each other with sand on the shoreline. Besides, young boys are observed climbing tall palm trees to gather fruits.

What is more, several activities take place along and inside the shoreline. Vendors are seen carrying ice creams and soft drinks all over the shoreline. Views of homes, hotels, and other buildings that run along the peak of the beach are also seen. On the sand where children play, pieces of shells are scattered.

In most cases, children collect the shells for fun. In the shades built along the shoreline, people are seen reading books, journals, and magazines. Some are seen idling on the sand, while few adults are observed playing football.

However, there is a disgusting scene of plastic bags, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beer bottles along the beach. These items seem to pollute the entire shoreline and the seawater.

Anglers are also observed far into the sea casting large nets into the waters to have a bulk catch of their prey. Some of the anglers are also observed perching on the edge of the shore carrying sticks in their hands. Their faces displayed the anticipation that they had for their prey.

The deep waters of the sea produce a marvelous view for anyone who gazes at the sea. The water is seen to be slowly running low on the shore. Small waves are also observed crashing on the shoreline. The surface of the sea is seen to appear blue in color.

However, some portions are also seen to have the spectrum that results from the sun’s refracted rays. Deep inside the sea, there are high waves that lift boats up and down mightily. The shimmering waves of the sea that are clear and blue mirror the rays of the hot sun. The refreshing breeze that emanates from the seawater is enjoyable.

In conclusion, the beach has a perfect view and activities that are delightful to experience during the summer. It is a place that everyone would love to be at all times.

As I step on the granular surface of the mildly sun-drenched beach, I feel the refreshing gush of ocean air, caressing my nostrils. The water is glistening in pearly evanescence, its serenity humbly interrupted by a thunderous squeaking of the children, valiantly rushing towards the water, only to huddle even faster back, to the safety of terra firma. The circular, luminous ball in the sky is not acknowledging the arrival of noon yet, and the lack of people, sunbathing on the beach feels more than good. As I am walking, I can feel the little grains of sand protruding through my fingers, giving my sore feet a pleasant, tickling sensation. Ever since I was little, I loved walking barefoot, especially on grassy and sandy surfaces. Grass always possessed an earthly cloud-like essence in its gentle plasticity, while sand, coarse and rough at times, felt almost like an always welcome massage. On finally having found a secluded little patch of terrain, adjusted for solitary basking in the auriferous landscape of aquamarine and honey, I seat myself on my hippie-inspired towel, and continue to observe the vastness before me. My introverted meditation is again interrupted by the shrill sounds of children, squeaking in delight. One little girl is particularly loud, yet not in an annoying way, rather in a way that makes one go green with jealousy at seeing someone enjoy something so simple such as running through the shallow part of the ocean, making sure to make as big of a splash as possible. She appears to be four, maybe five years old, with a wetted hair, sticking to her gently tanned face. Her hair is shimmering in the sun, tied with two cherry-colored little bows. On her nose, traces of suntan lotion are still visible, white, urging the skin to soak them up. It was gently and very carefully smeared on by who I assume is her mother, the lady who is lying on a hammock merely a meter away, keeping her little treasure under her hawk gaze constantly. Behind the girl in the little crimson bathing suit, two white dots appear on the horizon; hopeful fishing boats and its crewmen, out for the day. I imagine their sun burnt faces, how their fingers must have soaked up the smell of the ocean, of the fish they take out, like the butcher who, no matter how often and thorough he washes his hands, the faint scent of meat perpetually remains underneath the fingernails, revealing the secret of his profession. The boats swing rhythmically, like a cradle, lulling a baby to sleep. The water is tranquil and sempiternal. Above it, the cerulean image of the sky lies prostrate as far as the eye could see, with little dabs of puffy whiteness smeared over the clear blueness. The sun is beginning to pierce the blue serenity above and below, but nobody seems to mind. More and more people are starting to gather at the beach, forming a miniature ant society, scattered throughout the cinnamon surface greeting the water. They do not mind the smell of decomposing water life forms, which float carelessly along the glass façade of water. It is the smell of saltwater, floating on a breeze and they welcome it for one, heavenly afternoon. When the time comes, they will return to their concrete jungle of car mufflers, busy streets, trash and smog. But now, the moment consumes us all, we are one with nature that spreads its marine perpetuity in front of us and embraces us as her children. She caresses us with her dripping fingers, clings to our bodies in grains of arenaceous particles, brushes past our faces in buoyant wafts of Neptunian air, and lulls our minds in the clement glow of aubade warmth. All of a sudden, I hear music, which is utterly out of tune with the tranquility that this magical place offers. One of the café places on the beach has started playing some modern music, the one that appeals to younger people. For me, it completely disrupts the meditative qualities of the beach. I close my eyes, and endeavor to deafen the sounds of the music, giving emphasis to the squawking of the seagulls and the playful squealing of little children. I open my eyes, and the light is bewildering, yet enchanting at the same time. The people are all black dots on the auburn covering of the beach, like rare black pearls found in only some shells. This reminds me of the uniqueness that we all possess within ourselves, yet which is so easy to forget. The people are scattering around, looking for a place to settle down for the day, and put down their towels in rainbow colors. In a blink of an eye, the beach becomes an anthill of activity, the voices growing louder and louder, as faces grow by the numbers, finally transforming into one big human face that decided to inhabit the beach for the day. This is not the beach I enjoy anymore. The serenity of the place is gone; its meditative abilities have been stripped down to a commercialized noise of reckless polluters. I close my eyes and try to go back to the flapping of the seagulls’ wings and their talking to Mother Nature. The waves of music coming from the cafes and human clamor overwhelm me, and I cannot hear the gentle swaying of the ocean waves anymore. I bury my hands in the sand. It is warm and comforting to know of a constant in life. We will all dissolve, become granular, become one with the universe around us. We will all be given immortality, if only we know to appreciate it. With my eyes still closed, I smile enigmatically at the vast watery panorama in front of me, the soothing sounds of waves crashing against the rocks far away tickle my eardrums. I take the sand in my palm and let it slip through my fingers in waterfalls of sand, joining the granular plethora around me. I smile, because I hear nothing but the water anymore.

Summer! Like so many others, you’re heading to the beach to enjoy the coastline, soak up vitamin D, and work out with an unmatched view. But before diving into the surf, sand, and sun, take a moment to consider the following safety tips. Taking just a bit of time to be prepared will help ease your stress and help you enjoy your day even more!

When you think of the beach, you likely think ocean or lake front. So, with that comes one of the most prevalent causes of accidental death. In the United States, drowning is the second leading cause of death for persons 5 – 44 years of age, and for children 1-2 years, it is the top cause. This is not even counting those who drown but do not die and have lasting damage due to the lack of oxygen.

But drowning isn’t the only potential hazard at the beach. Sand and hot weather are a relaxing combination, but also bring with them some areas of caution that you may not think about right away.

Following water safety and sun safety, keeping an eye on the weather, watching out for hazards, and staying hydrated are just a few safety tips for a great day at the beach.

Take a moment to read through these tips before playing or swimming at the beach, so that you can relax even more, knowing that you’re being as safe as possible.

Playing at the beach

1. apply (and reapply) sunscreen.

Sunscreen is an easy way to keep the suns harmful rays at bay. Skin damage can happen with anyone – even those who seem to tan easily. Five sunburns at any age doubles the risk of melanoma.

By wearing SPF 15 or higher and reapplying in regular intervals per the instructions and after coming out of the water, you can limit the damage done to your skin during your visit.

And remember to reapply sunscreen regularly if you’re exercising in the sun, too. You are likely sweating off the sunscreen you’re wearing without even realizing it.

2. Follow signs and flags

The signs at beaches and swimming areas are there for a reason, so are not to be ignored. They often warn against local hazards, whether they’re permanent (like rock hazards) or temporary (like higher bacteria levels after a storm).

The exact flag signals vary from beach to beach so check before assuming you know the flags. Generally, the flags follow a pattern similar to this, but always double-check if you’re in a new area:

  • Green: Calm and clear ocean but still exercise caution. Low hazard.
  • Yellow: Medium surf or currents. The water could be rough and would be a good idea to stay by the lifeguards. Medium hazard.
  • Single Red: Strong surf and currents. Could mean the beach is closed. High hazard.
  • Double Red: The beach is closed to the public.
  • Purple or Blue: Dangerous marine life – think sharks/jellyfish. Use caution.

3. Keep an eye on the weather

In any outdoor setting, weather can quickly change. Thunderstorms on the beach can quickly turn dangerous. If a thunderstorm produces thunder and lightning, leave the water right away. If you are on a boat, return to shore as quickly as you can. Stay clear for at least 30 mins after the last thunder clap or lightning bolt.

4. Watch out for natural hazards

There are various other hazards to keep note of: tides, currents, waves and drop offs that take you from touching the bottom to deep water in one step. Further, underwater could be a host of rocks, debris, broken bottles, vegetation, marine life, etc. Wear water shoes to protect your feet from the unknown.

5. Watch out for other hazards

During your fun day at the beach, you might see the occasional person with a metal detector. This is a good reminder that there are things buried in the sand. While some may be valuable, others might be potentially dangerous. Broken glass, and other sharp objects may not be visible right away, so it’s important to keep an eye out for obvious hazards.

I was playing in a beach volleyball tournament a few years ago, and after jumping up for an attack, almost landed on a two-by-four with a nail sticking out of it buried on the beach court. I was lucky – my foot just grazed the end of the wood instead of landing on the nail.

It’s unfortunate, but it’s been known for beach volleyball courts to be intentionally vandalized . While this shouldn’t stop you from your fun day at the beach, it’s important to be mindful that there are sometimes hazards you can’t see right away.

6. Drink alcohol in moderation

Many people relate lounging by the pool or beach with a tasty cocktail (followed by another, then another…) However, staying sober is important for both swimming, as well as supervising others.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , alcohol use was involved in up to 70% of deaths associated with water recreation and almost 25% of visits to the emergency department for drowning.

If you have been drinking, do not get in the water. Your impaired judgement mixed with waves and quickly changing conditions do not mix.

Further, drinking can lead to quicker dehydration, setting you up for an increased risk of heat exhaustion during the hot beach days. Make sure if you are drinking, you alternate with water and stay under your limit, and always have a designated driver pre-selected. Of course, if children are around it is advised you stay sober.

7. Watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Heat exhaustion can happen to anyone. By drinking water and taking breaks from the sun, you help your chances of not having the heat take over.

When a person begins to suffer from heat exhaustion, they become confused, dizzy, fatigued, headache, experience muscle cramping or weakness, can become nauseous, either sweat a lot or not at all, have pale skin, swell, and have rapid heartbeat.

If you or the person you are with experience any of the symptoms, get out of the heat and work to cool the person down. Utilize ice packs, cold water, and shade. Putting ice packs under the armpits or in the groin is a trick to cool quickly. If you suspect heat stroke, do not give liquid. In either case, seek out the lifeguard and get help. 8. Wear shoes – even on the sand

Shoes are very important for the beach. Aside from in the water, the sand can get awfully hot and has been known to cause burns. If someone has dropped glass or another unsightly material, your shoes protect your feet from unnecessary cuts. Also, beach bathrooms can be quite nasty, so instead of picking up some unwanted foot bacteria, slip on shoes.

Sand socks are a great option for the beach. Whether you’re walking from the car to your favorite lounging spot, or playing beach volleyball, sand socks will protect your feet from the burning hot sand and other potential hazards.

Sand socks are a great option, because they’re not as heavy as regular shoes, so you still get a lot of mobility. And ever worn sandals walking across sand? Sure, they protect the bottom of your feet. However, you also pickup sand with every step, which weighs you down. While a little bit of sand still gets inside sand socks, it’s definitely not as much as with sandals or regular shoes. They’re also waterproof, so you can transition easily from sand to surf.

9. Hydrate regularly

Make sure that you’re drinking extra water when soaking in the sun. The heat can dehydrate you much more quickly, and drinking water regularly helps regulate your body temperature.

But remember that not all liquid is made the same. Alcohol will actually dehydrate you, and even more quickly when you’re in the hot sun. Yet, totally understandable, plain ol’ water doesn’t feel the same as downing a beach-inspired beverage.  Check out these drinks to give a twist and yet hydrate you at the same time.

10. Avoid napping

As tempting as it may be to doze off to the lull of the ocean waves and under the warm sun, be careful if you’re falling asleep on the beach. Too many times, sunburns happen while the unsuspecting person was dozing under the hot sun.

Falling asleep also means you’re more vulnerable. If you’re by yourself, this means you’re more of a target to would-be thieves. And if you’re with a group of friends, it may mean you’re more susceptible to getting buried in the sand or other pranks.

If you do plan on catching a few ZZZs, position your sun shade so that you’ll stay covered, even as the sun moves across the sky.

11. Stay off your phone

Your phone is a double-edged sword. While nice to have in case of an emergency so that you can call for help, you must stay off of it so it doesn’t distract you. According to the manager of East Bay Regional Park District in California, the phone is by far the biggest distraction they see. Knowing how quickly the waters can change and how fast and quietly a drowning can happen, the Instagram post is just not worth it.

Having your phone at the beach means there’s a good chance it’s going to get covered in sand or water. It’s also really easy for it to get stolen. So, if you do bring your phone, try to keep it tucked away in your bag as much as possible.

12. Use the right bug spray

When picking a bug spray, remember that while DEET works the best, it can be toxic for aquatic life. If you are just hanging on the beach with kids above 12 months of age, DEET may be the way to go. However, if you plan to get into the water, protect the environment of the marine life.

13. Be extra cautious with kids

A day at the beach is a great summertime activity for families. However, children tend to get super-excited, and require additional eyes on them. By their very nature, children are exploring and learning. But they don’t know all the hazards at the beach yet – so it’s up to the grown-ups to keep them safe.

If kids are old enough, establish some ground rules before you even get to the beach. Remind them to stay close, and that they’re going to have to wear a hat, sunscreen, and a lifejacket (or an age-appropriate flotation device).

A kid’s top priority is playing, so remind them regularly to sit under some shade, as they won’t think of this themselves. They’ll probably also need to be reminded to eat and drink often.

Babies and younger kids have very sensitive skin, so make sure they’re wearing sunscreen and re-apply it often. But remember, no sunscreen on babies 6 months and under. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) instead of putting sunscreen on babies under 6 months old, it’s best to keep them out of the sunlight as much as possible .

Wearing a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) shirt is an even better way to minimize direct sunlight on skin. UPF clothing is a great option for kids , too, so that there’s less skin showing to apply sunscreen to.

14. Bring shade with you

Shade is not something you see a lot of at the beach. Many of you are probably thinking, “yeah, that’s kind of the point” [insert eye roll]. However, if you’re planning on spending a significant amount of time at the beach (even a couple of hours counts here, folks), you’ll probably want to bring some shade with you.

Some beach areas may have umbrellas for rent, but depending how busy it is and how early you get there early, you can’t guarantee that one will be available.

Taking a break from the sunshine is good for a number of reasons. It cools you down, it helps minimize sunburn, it helps prevent heat stroke/exhaustion, and for me anyway, it helps prevent headaches.

Having a colourful umbrella or canopy is also a great way to establish your plot of beach for the day! Just keep an eye on it if the wind picks up – it’s really easy for an umbrella to get caught in a wind gust and have a day trip of its own.

When buying a beach umbrella, make sure to choose one that is UPF, so that the suns rays are blocked. If you’re bringing a traditional umbrella-style sun shade, you may want to consider bringing an umbrella with an anchor , so that it’s easier to place deeper in the sand.

There are also some great tent-style shade options as well. These set-up and clean up easily, and provide you with some UPF protection as well.

I’ve had the Sport-Brella for over 5 years, and love it. It can be used as a traditional umbrella, or can be used on its side for a more consistent shade area.

15. Bring a cooler for food

It may seem like you’re lugging everything, including the kitchen sink, to your relaxing day at the beach. But some things are worth lugging. Even that cooler. Especially since it’s packed full of your yummy lunch and snacks for the day (and probably some tasty bevvy’s, too!).

Not only does keeping food cool help it taste better, it’s also good food sense. If you’ve packed any kind of perishable foods, keeping them cold is essential. You won’t want to end you fun day at the beach with a case of food poisoning!

Here are a couple of tips for keeping your food cold for as long as possible:

  • Keep the perishable food on the bottom
  • Keep the cooler in the shade, and even cover it with a blanket or towel
  • Keep it closed as much as possible

16. Keep your stuff safe

It’s amazing how much STUFF you need to bring for a simple day at the beach. Car keys. Wallet. Smartphone. The best way to keep your valuables safe is to not bring them with you at all. However, this isn’t always realistic. The best alternative, then, is to bring as little with you as possible.

So, instead of bringing your whole wallet or purse, just bring enough money for the day, one piece of ID, and maybe one credit card. Also consider:

  • Use a waterproof pouch for your smartphone and keys, and take it swimming with you. But don’t forget to attach it well, so that you don’t lose it!
  • Use the buddy system, and take turns going in the water.
  • Keep your valuables out of sight by keeping them in a zippered bag.

Remember, too, that stuff in your car may be an easy target. You may need to park your car quite a distance from your beach spot for the day, and thieves may target vehicles in day parking lots. Keep valuables out of plain site, and even locked in the trunk. This may not be a 100% guarantee your car won’t get broken in to, but at least it’s less of a temptation.

Follow Water Safety

17. learn to swim.

Learning to swim is the equivalent of learning to drive. Will it 100% prevent you from drowning? No – but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the effort. A quick google search will bring up learn-to-swim programs in your area. Most YMCAs and summer clubs provide lessons to members at a reduced cost and to non-members at a premium.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , about 10 people in the United States die DAILY from drowning, and for every one person the ER sees, another 5 do not die from drowning but go on to have life altering consequences.

Drowning is fast and often silent. Many victims of drowning are in plain site of fellow swimmers and still unnoticed. While swimming lessons may not prevent drowning, it can buy precious seconds where to yell for help or get to a wall.

18. Learn the signs of drowning

Drowning does not look like the movies. There are not flailing arms and shouts of help. In fact, most times, drowning is completely silent and is often surrounded by others who simply do not know what to look for in a victim.

To help keep safe, and help those around you, learn what drowning looks like. Often a drowning person has his head tipped back with a vacant look, bobbing in the water while making not progress in any direction. If you are able to see his arms, it may appear as if he is trying to climb an invisible ladder.

Drowning happens quickly, and often looks like the person is just swimming. Here’s a video showing how quickly a person can start drowning , and look like they’re still playing in the water.

The drowning process can only be stopped with oxygen and a person can continue to drown even though they have walked away from the beach that day. By getting really familiar with drowning, you can help to prevent this top cause of accidental death.

19. Swim near lifeguards

This cannot be stressed enough: lifeguards are NOT your first line of defense in drowning. They are there to respond to emergencies and do everything in their power to prevent them. The responsibility of keeping safe lies on those going to the beach or the parents if children are involved.

Lifeguards can notify of unsafe conditions, as well as explain rules put in place to keep everyone safe. They have been trained to respond to common or expected emergencies that occur at that location.

Lifeguard are not doctors but are trained to be first responders with certification in CPR, First Aid, Rescue Breathing, and more. They are your backup and so by selecting a location they are stationed increases your chance of a positive outcome to an emergency. In fact, studies have shown that drowning at a beach without lifeguards is five times greater than if there were lifeguards.

20. Use life jackets

Even the strongest swimmers can tire out. It is estimated 76% of boating fatalities are from drowning. The Safe Boating Campaign explains various lifejackets which ensure the proper one is selected for boating.

Many children fight to wear a lifejacket based upon their restrictive nature. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has recently released puddle jumpers. These lifejackets allow children to play without the restrictive feel of a lifejacket creeping up on their necks.

Whichever jacket you use, ensure it is a reputable lifejacket approved by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) or another entity with authority/expertise in water safety.

21. Use the buddy system

To up your chances of safety while at the beach, bring a friend. Whether soaking up rays or riding the waves, having a buddy ensures someone has your back if you begin to succumb to the elements.

With the heat, it is possible heat exhaustion could strike or you tire while swimming. Your buddy can get help. A point to mention, if you are not trained as a lifeguard, make sure you throw something buoyant to help a person drowning, or get help. A drowning victim will try to climb anything in his/her power to get to air – including you.

22. Be aware of rip currents

The United States Lifeguard Association (USLA) states that 80% of saves are due to rip currents . This current is caused by the wave breaking unevenly on the shore and then creating a pull from the shore to the water. Thus, a rip current is formed pulling a swimmer away from the shore. This is different than an undertow.

If you are caught in a rip current, swim horizontal or parallel to the shore until you are free from the current and then swim at a diagonal back to the shore. Float, breathe, and do not panic. If you begin to tire, yell for help and take breaks by floating.

23. Look before you leap

Many accidents happen simply because a person leaps before they look or falsely assume because nothing was in the way the day before, it will be the same. In murky water, it is vital you enter the water feet first and do not jump in unless you know the water is free from any debris that may have moved with the water.

Many injuries happen due to body surfing. When bodysurfing, extend an arm in front of you to protect your neck. Better a broken arm than a broken neck.

24. Respect the waves

Waves, especially sudden and unprepared for, can result in broken bones, dislocations and even spinal injuries. When a wave carries you to the shore and then breaks, and you break with it, serious injuries can result.

I grew up swimming in fresh water lakes and played in the waves many times. However, the first few times I swam in the ocean, I was shocked at how powerful the waves can be. You can almost feel the PULL of the water. No matter how comfortable you may feel in the water, always respect the power of it.

A good line of attack is to NOT put your back toward a wave that could break into you and push you forward, head first. Instead, FACE THE WAVES so you can predict and respond to them. If you are confused on the strength of the waves that day, ask the lifeguards.

25. Be aware of ocean life

Most ocean life goes about its business without bothering humans sharing their space. Wearing shoes helps to protect your feet again mussels and clams that could be hanging out under the water, as well as crabs who may pinch if stepped on or too close.

Shark attacks are not as common as the movies Jaws would have you think. Even the most dangerous sharks only attack humans by mistaking them for one of its common prey. About 19 people yearly are attacked by sharks and only 1-2 deaths every other year are the result of these attacks.

If you’re spending time in an area that you’re not familiar with, it’s best to learn about any local common marine life. I remember one of the first times I went to an ocean beach as a child – there was a huge patch of jellyfish floating in the water! Just think how enticing this would be for kids to check out! Luckily, we knew enough to stay clear of those floating bubbles.

It’s fun to explore new areas, but you also want to do so wisely.

Beach Safety

Beach safety

  • Only swim where there are lifeguards on duty and where signs indicate that it's safe to swim.
  • Make sure that lifeguards can see you when you're in the water.
  • At the beach, always swim between the red and yellow flags. These indicate safe and supervised swimming areas. Areas outside these flags might conceal dangerous currents and tides. Only swim in areas where other people are present.
  • Surfers and body-boarders shouldn’t surf in areas where bait and game fish are running, where seals are present, or seabirds are diving.
  • If you find yourself in trouble, raise your arm to attract the lifeguards' attention and don’t panic.
  • If you see someone in trouble in the sea, alert the lifeguards or find help. Don't put your own life in danger as well.
  • Don't swim or drive motor boats while under the influence of alcohol. It dulls the senses and slows reaction times. Remember: Alcohol isn’t allowed on Western Cape beaches. If you’re found with alcohol, you will be fined, and your alcohol confiscated.
  • Know how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until help arrives.
  • Don't dive from tidal pool walls, as this has been known to result in spinal injuries. Swim only at low tide when no waves are breaking over the walls. The pools provide a safer option to swim in than the oceans, as the currents are kept at bay.
  • Don’t take out small or unstable boats far from shore in choppy water or stormy weather.
  • Ensure that you protect your skin from too much exposure to the sun. Too much sun can cause sunstroke/heat stroke . Keep hydrated by drinking lots of fluids, excluding alcoholic drinks.
  • Stay indoors during the hottest time of the day, and if you do go out make use of sunscreen, hats and other attire.

Swimming pool and diving area safety

  • Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Always obey the superintendent's instructions.
  • Don’t swim under or near the diving boards.
  • Only 1 person should be on a diving board at any given time.
  • Don’t jump or dive to the side of the diving board.

Leave it better than how you found it

We're fortunate to have the Western Cape coastline as part of our home. Let's all pitch in to keep our beaches clean and clear of any litter, because litter can cause a safety hazard to humans and marine life, especially glass and plastic . Remember to leave it better than how you found it - if you see it, pick it up.

Rip current warning

According to the  National Sea Rescue Institute  (NSRI), rips develop anywhere where there are breaking waves. The "rivers" of current are produced by water draining from the beach and back out to sea. Rip currents are not “undertow” and will not pull you under the water. Here are some tips from the NSRI:

Although not always detectable, strong rip currents have the following signs:

  • Water through a surf zone that is a different colour than the surrounding water.
  • A break in the incoming pattern of waves.
  • Seaweed or debris moving out through the surf zone.
  • Isolated turbulent and choppy water in the surf zone.
  • If you’re caught in a rip current the main thing to do is to stay calm and relax.
  • Swim slowly and conservatively, parallel to the shoreline or relax and let it carry you out past the breakers until it slacks.
  • If you can tread water or float, you’ll be safe until you can escape the flow and head back to the beach.
  • When you head back in, do so at an angle to the shoreline. Again, maintain a slow and relaxed pace until you reach the shore or assistance arrives.
  • Always make sure you're swimming where lifeguards are on duty. Remain calm and raise your arm to attract the lifeguards' attention.

What to do if you're caught in a rip current? 

Shark spotter flag

  • Don’t swim, surf or surf-ski when birds, dolphins or seals are feeding nearby.
  • Don’t swim in deep water beyond the breakers.
  • Don’t swim if you’re bleeding.
  • Don’t swim near river mouths.
  • Don’t swim, surf or surf-ski near areas where trek-netting, fishing or spearfishing is taking place.
  • If a shark has recently been sighted in an area where no shark spotters are present, consider using another beach for the day.
  • First-time visitors to beach areas should ask the local law enforcement officials, lifeguards or locals about the area.
  • Always obey beach officials.
  • For kayaking or surf-skiing far out to sea, consider paddling in groups and staying close together (in a diamond formation).
  • Consider using a personal shark shield when you go surfing or kayaking.
  • Pay attention to any shark signage on beaches.

Shark spotter flags: ​

There is a high shark alert  

A red flag indicates a general shark alert, and is raised when a shark has been observed in the area in the past two hours, when an increased presence of sharks has been observed or when conditions conducive to increased shark activity exist, example; fish activity or whale strandings. This flag will be lowered only when the alert is no longer necessary and will be flown in conjunction with one of the other spotting flags.

A shark has been spotted – sirens will sound; leave the water immediately

A white flag with a black shark diagram means that a shark is currently near the beach, and beach users must get out of the water. A siren will sound and the white flag will be raised.

Reporting emergencies Make sure you keep emergency numbers memorised or saved for urgent assistance.

Beach is one of my favourite places to visit. I feel so refreshed after visiting a beach. It makes my body and mind active, and I think it is the best place on this planet where we can enjoy ourselves with our friends and family members. I love playing with the sand and building sandcastles with my friends. We made a huge sandcastle on our last visit to the beach and named it ‘The Castle of Wonders’. My friend and I announced ourselves as the two kings of that castle and placed two flags above it. The red flag I put represented me as the king of the castle, and the blue one represented my friend. We also clicked a picture standing before our majestic sandcastle, and I consider it one of the greatest moments of my life.

The unpredictability of waves always amazes me. The way they hit the shores is magical. I love playing with waves; my friends and I run away from the waves to avoid getting our legs washed by them. A Day at the Beach Essay

A beach is an area of sand or small stones around the sea. I spent a day at Marina Beach in Chennai when I went there with my family on vacations. It was one of the best days of my life. I always wanted to visit the beach because it is a lot of fun.

Before we reached the beach, we bought caps and swimming dresses at the shops. When we reached the beach, I was so excited because everyone was enjoying the sea. Other children were playing with sand.

The beach was surrounded by dense trees and it was very clean. My mother sat on the sand under a tree and took out a book to read. My sister and I went to play with the water in the sea. We splashed water on each other and enjoyed the sea waves when they made us go up and down. After some time, we came back. Then I and my sister made a sandcastle. I also collected shells on the beach and we decorated the castle with them.

We bought fruits on the beach and also drank coconut water after that. When it was evening, we saw the setting sun. It looked like the sun was going inside the sea. We took a lot of pictures of this scene.

The beach became more splendid when the sky turned red. After six o’clock, we went to the changing room and took bath and changed our clothes because the guards did not allow us to be on the beach after sunset. We came back to our hotel and we all talked about our day. We all were so happy because the day was well spent.

        Summer has arrived, it’s boiling and your children don’t have school. You can think that going to the beach is the best thing you can do to relax and have some fun. However, as far as kids are concerned, you always have to be aware of them. So how can you have a good (and safe) day at the beach? Read on for some useful tips.

        I’m fairly sure that you will agree with me when I say that the first point you should consider are sunburns. Who hasn’t ever got sunburns while walking under the sun? That is why the first thing you ought to do before leaving home is putting sunscreen and specific clothes on your children, and don’t forget to put it yourself too. What is more, make sure your kids wear a cap and sunglasses and avoid going to the beach in the middle of the day when the sun shines more strongly. Oh! And remember to bring your parasol always with you.

        Every year, unfortunately, someone dies due to a digestion cut. And, perhaps, you can remember your mother saying “if he’d waited enough time after eating, he wouldn’t have died”. Don’t forget to wait at least two hours between eating and bathing in the sea. In fact, if you ignored this, your blood may be forced to leave the stomach and go to other parts of your body to keep them warm, causing stomach cramps with terrible consequences, even death.

        What about swimming in the sea? Almost everybody likes swimming and playing in the water. But with children, that is a bit more complicated than if you were in your own or with adults.  Never lose sight of your kids, it’s very important to know what they are doing every moment in the water because they can disappear in a second. Furthermore, be sure that they are on the shore where the depth is appropriate to their height. At sea, must be careful with the currents. They are one of the main reasons why drownings occur. At last but no less important, obey always the flags that the lifeguards place each and every day.

        As I see it, a morning or evening at the beach couldn’t be better if you follow these simple rules. So, grab your swimsuit and your rubber ring and let’s go to the beach!
