How to resume an interrupted download in google chrome.

Downloading a file and the internet cuts out? Here's how to resume an interrupted download in Google Chrome.

Quick Links

Resume downloads using chrome's download manager, resume downloads using wget.

An internet connection can be unpredictable at times, and a sudden drop of the connection while downloading a large file can be frustrating. However, Google Chrome lets you resume downloads if they unexpectedly stop.

Google Chrome uses a built-in download manager to display all your downloads---active, failed , canceled, and completed. The manager opens in its own tab and shows a list of every file you've ever downloaded in Chrome.

Note:  Some websites don't allow for you to resume a download if it fails to complete the first time around. Certain web servers don't remember your request to download the file, forcing it to start from the beginning all over again.

To open the download manager, type

into the Omnibox and hit the Enter key. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+J on Windows or Command+J on macOS.

In the list of downloads, find the failed item and click "Resume".

If everything goes right, your download will resume from where it left off before you were disconnected.

If the download fails to resume after pressing the button, you have one more method to try. It uses the command line, a piece of free software, and requires the partially downloaded file. While the command line can be a bit daunting for some, we will go over it step-by-step so you can follow along with ease.

WGet is an open-source application for Linux, macOS, and Windows, part of the GNU project that retrieves files over the internet. It's a command-line tool that lets aborted downloads resume directly from web servers.

Head over to the WGet downloads page and get the package that's right for your system. We'll be using the Windows version for this guide, but it should work identically on all operating systems.

After WGet finishes downloading, install/extract the contents to a folder that's easy to remember. Because it's primarily used to resume Chrome downloads and uses the partially downloaded file, we put it in Chrome's default download folder for convenience.

Open the downloads manager with Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+J (macOS), locate the file, right-click the source file's website, and then select "Copy Link Address."

Now, click More (three dots) and then choose the "Open Downloads Folder" option.

Locate the file, right-click it, and then select "Rename."

Remove the ".crdownload" extension from the end of the file and hit the Enter key.

Sometimes, Chrome gives a download a default name of "Unconfirmed.crdownload." If this happens, you will have to rename the whole file. You can get the original filename from the source's URL you copied earlier. For instance, our source URL is

which means "6.7.1.9.exe" is the filename.

A message will open warning you the file might become unusable if you change the extension. Click "Yes."

Now, open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (macOS) and navigate to the downloads folder (i.e.

) where the file and the extracted WGet executable is located. Type wget -c <theSourceFilesDownloadWebsite>. It should look something like this:

wget -c http://source.website.com/incompleteFile.exe

Hit the Enter key and, if the server allows for it, the file will resume from where it left off in Chrome. Otherwise, the download will start from the beginning again.

After the download completes, you can close Command Prompt or Terminal and open the file normally as you would if it had finished downloading properly the first time.

What is a crdownload file, why was my chrome download interrupted.

  • Use Chrome's Download Manager to Resume Downloads
  • Resume Interrupted Chrome Downloads With Wget
  • Use Third-Party Download Managers

Key Takeaways

  • Chrome creates .crdownload files while downloading. Once complete, it renames them without the extension.
  • Incomplete downloads result from various factors such as server issues or corrupted files. Wget can help resume them.
  • Chrome's download manager may not always work. Consider using third-party download managers for better functionality.

Downloads getting interrupted can be frustrating, especially when you've been waiting a long time for a large file to download. Downloads can fail for many reasons, and when they do, they usually leave an unusable .crdownload file behind. But fear not, there are ways to resume interrupted downloads in Google Chrome and get those files downloaded successfully.

When you start a download in Google Chrome, it creates a temporary file with the .crdownload extension. This file serves as a placeholder, storing the downloaded data as it comes in. As the download progresses, the .crdownload file grows in size. Once the download has finished successfully, Chrome renames the file, removing the .crdownload extension and replacing it with the correct file extension.

If the download was interrupted for some reason, the incomplete file retains the .crdownload extension. This indicates that the download process wasn't complete.

Interrupted downloads aren't always Chrome's fault. There are a few reasons why a partial or incomplete download can occur:

  • The web server doesn't allow you to resume a download and forces it to start from the beginning.
  • If your internet connection is slow or the server gets overloaded with requests, then a timeout can result in incomplete downloads.
  • The source file is corrupted. In such a case, you'll experience a partial download no matter which browser you use.

When a download is interrupted, you usually have the option to resume it. However, you might sometimes have to download the file from scratch because Chrome can't detect the .crdownload fragment you just downloaded.

If you're on a limited bandwidth plan or your ISP throttles the data after you exceed the fair usage limit, the consequences of an interrupted download can prove expensive. We'll show you how to resume failed downloads in Google Chrome.

If you're unable to download any file with any browser, then the culprit likely isn't Chrome. Refer to our guide on what to do when no files download on Windows to diagnose and fix this issue before proceeding.

1. Use Chrome's Download Manager to Resume Downloads

The simplest way to resume a failed download in Chrome is through the browser's built-in download manager. Press Ctrl + J or click the Options (three vertical dots) dropdown menu and select Downloads to open the download manager.

In the list of downloads, find the failed item and click Resume . If everything goes to plan, your download will resume from where it got interrupted.

Unfortunately, Chrome's download manager doesn't always work as intended. Many users agree that Chrome's download manager is slow , and errors like Download Failed Network Error are too common. If this method doesn't work out for you, move on to the next.

2. Resume Interrupted Chrome Downloads With Wget

If the download fails to resume in Chrome, you can try Wget . It's a free, command-line tool to download files from the web. Wget can work with the .crdownload file to resume the download without forcing you to start the download over. It works brilliantly over slow or unstable network connections, and if a download fails, it'll keep retrying until the whole file downloads to your computer.

Here's how you can use Wget to resume interrupted Chrome downloads.

Download Wget

There are many versions of Wget available for Windows. Head to Eternally Bored to download the latest 1.21.4 64-bit build. In this case, the Wget.exe file suffices; you don't need to download the zip file. If Chrome can't download the file , download Wget with a different browser.

If you think you're going to use Wget frequently, it's wise to set it as an environment variable in Windows . Otherwise, you're ready to move to the next step.

Get the File's Download URL

Before you download a file through Wget, you need two essential bits of information: the download URL and the location of the CRDOWNLOAD file. You can get the download URL from Chrome's download manager.

  • In Google Chrome, press Ctrl + J to open the download manager.
  • Locate the file, right-click the file's website, and select Copy link address .

This will copy the download URL to your clipboard. You'll need this soon, so paste it somewhere like Notepad.

Rename the CRDOWNLOAD File

Chrome downloads are stored in your Downloads folder by default; this is also where you'll find the .crdownload file of an incomplete download. The .crdownload extension is a byproduct of Chrome, you can neither open nor convert it to another format.

To resume the download with Wget, you need to remove the .crdownload extension from the file's name. To do so, right-click the .crdownload file and select Rename . Remove the .crdownload extension from the end of the file and press Enter .

A message will warn you that the file might become unusable if you change the extension. Click Yes . If you get a file in use error , find the cause and close it. Whatever happens, do not close Chrome as this will delete the .crdownload file.

Once you've renamed the file, right-click it and select Copy as path to get the file address. Jot this down too as you'll need it in Wget.

Resume Your Download with Wget

Now it's time to use Wget and finally get the download going. Go to the folder where you've stored Wget.exe, right-click on a blank space, and select Open in terminal .

Once inside the terminal, run the code below to check whether everything's working:

Got a long list of commands? Good news! Wget is functioning properly. The command to resume your Chrome download in Wget is below:

The -c here instructs Wget to accept partially downloaded files, and -O stands for output document file. Replace the parameters in square brackets with the addresses you copied in the previous steps. Remember to remove the brackets ( [ ] ) and enclose the addresses in quote marks ( " " ).

Your command should look like this:

Input the command in the terminal and press Enter to resume the download.

Wget will now start resuming the download. Once the download is complete, you'll see the output path. This will be the same folder as the original file by default.

3. Use Third-Party Download Managers

While Google Chrome has improved in terms of stability, the native download manager lacks essential features like scheduling, sorting, and resuming downloads. If you're someone who frequently downloads large files, there are plenty of great file download managers that provide much more than what Chrome does. These download managers also have improved resume functions, which means you'll less commonly need to restart your downloads from scratch.

Alternatively, you can also use download manager extensions for Chrome . These extensions integrate a better download manager into Chrome and add new features like scheduling and setting a speed limit.

Unfortunately, download manager apps and extensions can't resume your interrupted Chrome download, but they can help prevent it from happening in the future. Interrupted downloads can be a real pain, but with a little know-how, they don't have to spell the end for your download efforts.

Resuming Chrome file download after shutting down the PC

I have initiated a large download. Unfortunately, internet is slower than usual, and this download will take 3 more hours. I need to leave in 1 hour, and need to shut down the PC. Is there some way that I can freeze this download and resume it later? If I suspend/hibernate, will this continue? Or should I pause it with the built-in Chrome function, and then somehow copy the temporary files and kill / close Chrome, and put this back in place after turning it on again?

Using Chrome 18 on Linux.

Pause it with the option built-in to Chrome, and hibernate the computer. If the SERVER that is providing the download supports resuming downloads, then after you resume from hibernation, you should have no issues resuming the download.

After you pause the download, there is no need to touch Chrome. Just pause, and hibernate. By that I mean, don't close Chrome. Don't kill it or edit anything. Just pause the download, leave Chrome up and running, and hibernate.

  • Ultimately, my internet connection simply failed before I could do this, so this issue was "solved" beforehand. I'm marking this as accepted because I think this would have worked. Thanks! –  please delete me May 16, 2012 at 20:53

There is no need to hibernate the computer. If you just use a download manager such as JDownloader (multiplatform) you'll be able to resume the download after shutdown provided the server you are downloading from supports it.

Some websites, due to server software, just do not support resuming downloads and they can't start transmitting midway through a file.

Amicable's user avatar

  • 1 This works with files that are already in the process of being downloaded? Meaning in the example provided by the OP, since he has almost finished the download, if he were to now install JDownloader, it would assume control of the download in progress and allow for it to be continued later? Or would using JDownload only apply to downloads started after it has been installed? –  Bon Gart May 4, 2012 at 0:36
  • Only after it had been installed - good point +1 –  Amicable May 4, 2012 at 8:22
  • I've used JDownloader and Mipony for years. They are great, I use them especially to download from sites such as rapidgator, nitroflare.... Problem is they come in with lots of Ads and I believe they're also mining stuff or doing other things under the cover. –  Cătălin Rădoi May 16, 2019 at 7:25

Just pause the download before shutting down your computer. When you turn it back on you only have to resume it in the download section (in settings or press CRTL-J). It takes a while to restart and might not work for every download but it worked for me, hope it helps future users!

I own a laptop and I use VMs often. So when I download large files like macOS Catalina ISOs, I let it continue the download and just put it on sleep mode, making sure that the air vent is not blocked.

Orange Management Corporation's user avatar

there is one way you can use if the server does not support pausing the download you have to go to the download page then disconnect your wifi wait for 5 minutes then put it on again once its on it should say download failed (dont worry it didnt fail) then when you press resume it should resume even if the server doesnt support pausing

Nedrich's user avatar

Chrome will allow resuming if you terminate it's process via task manager. If you close it normally, chrome will cancel the download.

you only need simple trick:

  • trun of your wifi
  • if download fail don't click continue
  • trun off your pc and start again
  • open chrome>download/ctrl+j
  • click continue

There is a way but it will work only in some apps.

  • Download a file in Chrome web browser.
  • Go to Chrome Downloads .
  • Wait for a few seconds.
  • Now without closing your browser just shut down your computer without pausing it or closing your browser.
  • Now switch off your UPS and open plug. After a few minutes reopen your computer and open browser -> Chrome Downloads.
  • Click on Resume or Retry.
  • If it does not start or starts from beginning, then go to the first line of my answer. It could work only in some apps.

Where are canceled or failed downloads stored?

by Leo A. Notenboom

I’m on Windows XP: is there a place where failed or canceled internet downloads from Internet Explorer, or information about them, is stored on my PC?

In this excerpt from Answercast #6 , I show how to access temporary files in your browser and clear them from history. Then, we take a step deeper and examine how to delete them permanently from your system.

Are deleted files gone?

Yes, and no, and it depends on what it is you’re attempting to do, or to protect yourself from.

When a download fails, Internet Explorer deletes the partial files that it was downloading. Now, there may still be a trace of that in its download history; so if you were to, say hit Ctrl-J, or take a look at View Downloads, the file may still be listed – and potentially even be listed as incomplete or canceled. So that may still be there.

You should be able to get rid of that by using Internet Explorer’s Clear History option. That should clear out everything, not just your browsing history, but your download history as well.

Secure Delete

Now, on the other hand, if you’re worried about somebody still being able to find that information, you need to look at a couple of other things.

Deleted files aren’t necessarily deleted. We’ve had this discussion a few times on the site. The fact that Internet Explorer deleted the partial download doesn’t necessarily mean that all traces of that partial download have been removed from your system.

You definitely want to go in and do a secure delete or a secure wipe of the free space on the drive to make sure that any remnants of that file, of that partial download, have been removed or at least obscured.

Same thing with the Download History. If you just clear the Download History, I believe that might be, again, a simple file delete. You’re probably going to want to go in and use a secure delete utility to wipe the free space to make sure all traces of information are also removed from your hard drive.

Android could start reminding you to use all of those unopened apps you forgot about.

A Google Play Store update could soon introduce the new feature

  • The Google Play Store app may soon remind you to open new unopened apps to avoid clutter and save space.
  • The reminder will occur 24 hours after the app remains unopened, with the option to dismiss or snooze.
  • Google also introduced a remote app management feature for Android users to easily clean up their devices.

When you hear about a trending app, it’s easy to add it to your device by logging into the Google Play Store and downloading it within seconds. That being said, you may be in the middle of a different task upon adding the app to your device. Regardless of what the distraction is, you could forget about the fresh install entirely — but Google wants to fix this by making sure you don’t let unused apps consume valuable space or battery power.

5 best features of the Google Play Store

As reported by Android Authority , a teardown of version 41.2.21 of the Google Play Store app seems to suggest that a new “Open app reminder” feature will debut in the future. This means that if you download an app to your device and forget to open it, you will receive a reminder once it goes unused. For now, it seems that the reminder is set to occur if the app is left unopened for 24 hours.

How Google Play Store reminders work

It seems that it will be possible to dismiss the notification, and you can go about your business without opening the app. However, the feature will send you a second reminder if you still don’t use the app. In the event that you do not open it for a second time, the Google Play app will not send you a third reminder. Per screenshots, it looks like you’ll be able to set the alerts to silent or to ring or vibrate. For now, the feature is still in beta, and there’s a chance that it may never become official.

However, it’s clear that Google is intent on making app management easier through the Play Store app. Recently, a new feature rolled out that allows Android users to manage apps remotely on their secondary devices. This can be done by opening the Google Play Store app, tapping on “Manage apps and device,” and selecting the apps you want to remove. While it may be a minor convenience, it’s these types of changes that can make all of the difference when it comes to improving how Android is used.

Google Play Store could soon remind you to open that app you just downloaded (APK teardown)

Published on 20 hours ago

Google Play Store logo on smartphone stock photo (1)

  • Google is working on a reminder feature for the Play Store that will remind you to open the app you’ve just downloaded but haven’t opened yet.
  • The reminder will be sent within 24 hours of downloading the app (and not opening it), and you will receive no more than two reminders per unopened new app.
  • The reminder feature is available to some users and will be rolled out to more users in the future.

The Google Play Store is one of the fundamental experience pillars of Android. Even though you can install apps without it , most users exclusively rely on the Play Store for all their app download needs. But thanks to the multitasking prowess of Android, many of us find ourselves in situations where we download and install an app but forget about actually initializing it and running it. Google is working on a feature for these situations, where the Play Store will remind you to open the app that you just downloaded but never opened.

Google Play Store v41.2.21 references a new “Open app reminder” feature. In the future, when you download an app but forget to open it within 24 hours, the Google Play Store will send you a reminder notification that your app has been installed and is ready to run.

Google Play Store Open App Reminder 3

If the user dismisses the notification and still doesn’t open the app, the Play Store will remind the user again in some time. However, after two reminders, there will be no further reminders about this installed app based on the code we’ve seen within the app. The reminder feature will continue to send reminders about other newly installed apps up to the maximum limit of two reminders per app.

This feature will be handy for people who like to queue up app downloads and have chosen to install apps over Wi-Fi. The phone usually downloads the apps, but the user may not immediately realize this. There are also people like me who install apps and then switch to different activities, forgetting about the installed app (and the reason for installing that app) entirely. A reminder would serve well in such situations.

The reminder feature is not currently live in the Google Play Store. Google is currently testing it within the app, so it could roll out soon.

Update, June 3, 2024, at 11.30 PM ET: Some users have spotted the feature on their device, indicating that Google is rolling it out to some users. We’re expecting a wider rollout soon.
