Dissertation (HRM)

In the final module to the MSc Human Resource Management programme, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to be guided through independent research into an HRM topic of interest to you, culminating in a 15,000 word dissertation. You’ll be supported every step of the way: learning about what research is; selecting a topic and a research question; reviewing the relevant literature; designing an appropriate methodology to collect data; and analysing those data. You’ll also be able to develop your academic writing skills.

Vocational relevance

This module gives you the opportunity to study a real-life HRM problem, issue or change in depth. This will allow you to generate recommendations for professional practice in HR as well as for future academic research.

What you will study

This module is divided into five stages, which correspond to the stages of doing research for a Masters level dissertation. These stages are equivalent to the units you have studied in previous MSc HRM modules.

In Stage 1, Preparing for your dissertation and starting your research, you’ll begin by examining what is required of a Masters student and a Masters dissertation. You’ll be able to examine previous OU MSc HRM dissertations to get a better feel for what is required. Then you’ll consider what it’s like to do research, and the important things to reflect on as you embark on your own research. This will enable you to select a topic and a research question/objective and think about what kind of data you’ll need to collect to address it. Finally you'll spend some time learning about the importance of writing for your dissertation and how to do it well. Stage 1 will prepare you for the first tutor-marked assignment (TMA), which is an outline of your research question/objective and a rationale for this.

Stage 2, Reviewing the literature and refining your research ideas and question(s), covers the literature review, a crucial element of any Masters dissertation. In this stage you’ll develop your skills in finding the relevant literature, reading it critically and writing the review itself. This stage of B894 will also support you in deciding exactly what your research gap is – i.e., something that isn’t already well travelled in the literature – and therefore to revisit your research question/objective if necessary as well as to think ahead to your methodology. Stage 2 will prepare you for the second TMA, which is a draft of the literature review chapter of your dissertation.

Stage 3, Designing your research , prepares you for the third TMA, which is a draft of the research methodology chapter of your dissertation. This stage is divided into five parts. However, you’ll only study three of these parts, as follows:

  • Part 1 is called Developing your research philosophy . This is compulsory for all students. Here you’ll learn about philosophy as it pertains to research – i.e. the different assumptions researchers make about social reality and about knowledge of that reality, as well as the values that underpin research such as the extent to which they see objectivity as important. This leads into material about research approaches, for example whether to test a theory or to develop one as a result of your research. You’ll also learn about research strategy – in other words, the overall process you’ll use to gather your data. This part concludes with material about the overall time needed to plan and undertake your data gathering, negotiating access to those data and research ethics.
  • Part 2 is called Qualitative methodology . This and Part 3 are compulsory for students who want to undertake qualitative research, and you’ll be equipped to make that choice by the time you reach this part. Part 2 discusses various research designs – i.e. plans or blueprints for qualitative research. You’ll also learn about the key qualitative methods you are likely to use in an MSc HRM dissertation – less structured interviews, focus groups and qualitative secondary data (i.e., data which have been gathered by other people).  Finally, you’ll learn about ways to record qualitative data, as well as revisiting research ethics as they specifically pertain to qualitative research and exploring how to plan qualitative research.
  • Part 3 is called Qualitative data analysis . Here you’ll learn about when to begin the analysis of your qualitative data as well as how to do it. Although there are a variety of ways to undertake such analysis, here we focus on two which we believe are the most straightforward and relevant for you as MSc HRM students: reflexive thematic analysis and grounded theory. You’ll also cover material about writing up qualitative data analysis, and in particular different ways to discuss such data, linking them to your research question/objective and the existing literature in your topic area.
  • Part 4 is called Quantitative methodology. Parts 4 and 5 are compulsory for students who want to undertake quantitative research, and again you'll be equipped to make that choice by the time you reach this part. This part offers a general overview of quantitative research, as well as revisiting how to formulate a research question for this kind of enquiry. It will also introduce you to developing hypotheses, measuring variables, sampling and designing and using self-completion questionnaires which are the most commonly used quantitative research method for MSc HRM dissertations.
  • Part 5 is called Quantitative data analysis . Here you’ll review the types of variable which you learned about in Part 4 as well as exploring basic statistical techniques for the analysis of quantitative data. These techniques will equip you to undertake both univariate analysis, where only one variable is analysed, but also bivariate analysis where two variables are considered together to identify the relationship between them.

Stage 4, Carrying out your research and analysing your data , is the time when you will be collecting and analysing data, discussing your findings, and preparing to draw out conclusions. You will also be refining the drafts of your literature review and your research methodology chapters. As such the learning material for this stage is very light compared to previous stages. However, some is provided to steer you through this vital period in your dissertation research, and to enable you to continue to connect with your tutor and your peers for help and support. Stage 4 prepares you for your final TMA.

Stage 5, Completing your dissertation , is the last stage of the module when you will finalise your dissertation (end-of-module assessment) for submission. It will guide you through the process of writing the introduction and conclusion chapters as well as providing useful guidance on revising the other chapters to ensure the finished product is as strong as possible. Again the learning material here is fairly light to give you the necessary time and space for this work.

By studying this module you'll learn how to:

  • identify and justify a suitable topic for research and related research question(s)/objective(s)
  • carry out a literature search and write a critical review of the literature relevant to your chosen topic
  • develop a methodology for carrying out your research
  • carry out your empirical research by collecting or accessing the data you need
  • analyse your data to arrive at findings and draw conclusions which address your research question(s)/conclusion(s)
  • write up your research in the form of a dissertation.

Teaching and assessment

Support from your tutor.

Throughout your module studies, you’ll get help and support from your assigned module tutor, who will act as your dissertation supervisor. They’ll help you by:

  • marking your assignments (TMAs) and providing detailed feedback for you to improve
  • guiding you to additional learning resources
  • providing individual guidance, whether that’s for general study skills or specific module content
  • facilitating online discussions between you and your fellow students in the dedicated tutor group forums
  • providing feedback to the tutor group on tutor group forum discussions

You'll be able to contact your tutor by email, phone, via your tutor group forum on the module website, Skype, MS Teams or Adobe Connect.

Completion of this module is essential to achieving the MSc HRM but also to achieve an upgrade in your Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development membership to Associate level.

Preparatory work

You may wish to revisit Creating evidence-based value in people management (B812), specifically Session 3 of Unit 2 (Evaluating different sources of evidence) and Session 1 of Unit 4 (Literature reviews for evidence-based practice). Both of these sessions cover material which will be developed and expanded upon in B894. However, be aware that B812 focuses on evidence-based practice in HRM whereas B894 focuses on academic research in HRM. As such the angles taken in each module are different.

The study aims to identify the level of effectiveness in Human Resource Management (HRM) and its impact on employees' satisfaction in the banking sector of Jordan. A questionnaire was developed and administered to 540 employees in the banking sector of Jordan out of which 406 were returned to test research hypotheses. The findings revealed a high level of effectiveness of all HRM practices combined and for four individual practices (HR planning, staffing, training & development and performance appraisal); while, a medium level of compensation effectiveness was yielded. It has been found that employees' satisfaction level was medium. A strong positive relationship has been identified between the effectiveness of HRM and employees' satisfaction. The study recommended improving financial compensation system of banks, which would positively increase the level of employees' satisfaction. In the present era of dynamic business environment, organisations are being posed with new challenges every day. Globalisation, Liberalisation, Mergers and Acquisitions, advances in communication and information technology, changing mix and values of workforce have created enormous challenges for business organisations. The sustainability and success of business organisations depends upon, how effectively these organisations use their resources. To cope with these challenges, human resources play very crucial role. Human Resource Management focuses on optimal utilisation and management of human resource capital to achieve maximum output. Effective human resource management encompasses wide spectrum of approaches and strategies starting from HR planning, Recruitment and Selection till the Separation of employees. The present study attempts to gain insight into HRM practices being followed by Public and Private sector banks and judge the satisfaction level of employees from these practices. A structured questionnaire is constructed containing various questions on three major dimensions of HRM i.e Recruitment & selection, Salary and Compensation, Training and Development. Survey on sample of 100 respondents from both the Public and Private sector Banks has been administered for the purpose of this study. The data is analysed using statistical measure of Chi Square test using SPSS. Core requirements.

  • 11 courses; 49.5 quarter units

A comprehensive management/practitioner-level overview and appraisal of current practices, trends, and applied theory in the era of strategic alignment between employees, jobs, systems, technology, policies, procedures, training, and organizational development. Students will evaluate and analyze theory as it relates to practical application in the workplace.

A comprehensive analysis of the laws and regulations, both federal and state, that impact human resources management. The course emphasizes equal employment opportunity affirmative action, health and safety, privacy of information and methods of liability prevention in employment matters. Integrated into the course are aspects of ethical considerations as related to Human Resources Management, including employer use of power, organizational business practices, and safety concerns.

A comparison and evaluation of planning, organizing, directing and monitoring of human resources planning processes, including recruiting, selecting, placing and integrating individuals within organizations. A key aspect of the course is the selection process (testing and assessment of skills and traits that influence work performance), employee orientation and integration (employee development and career planning), and aspects of performance management. The course also covers current trends in employee outsourcing.

Employee development is the responsibility of the line manager, the human resources professional, and the employee. This course provides essential managerial-level comprehension of training theory and its practical applications in the business and management environment. Students learn the functions and duties of training: trainer/developer, the identification and assessment of training needs, program design and development, selection of delivery methods and means of instruction, the implementation of training programs, and evaluation. The course integrates training and development, organizational development and career development, critical components of Human Resource Development.

This course provides an overview of the latest technology as it applies to the human resources function and its impact of human resource management administration and organizational development. The course also integrates and assesses fundamental aspects of wage, salary, benefit administration, and employee rewards and incentives as they are becoming increasingly supported by automated systems.

The course provides students with both the day-to-day realm of common and complex issues related to human behavior in the workplace as it relates to employee relations, and an examination of relationships among unions, workers, management and the government. The course assesses legal restraints (i.e., negotiation, contract administration, decertification) and preparations and techniques for dealing with negotiations, strikes, and lock outs, as well as grievance handling and arbitration.

An in-depth review of current organizational behavior issues in the areas of workforce planning and performance management is covered as it relates to employee diversity. Using case studies, the course provides an integrated perspective of theory and practical aspects of interpersonal and group communication, organizational structures and system, and employee performance in the diverse workplace.

The course overviews how, why, and when to integrate the behavioral sciences with human resource management principles to increase individual and organizational effectiveness. Students will analyze, evaluate, and design relevant theories as they relate to practical application in the workplace.

Prerequisite :  ODV 600

This course examines and assesses how technology can best be integrated into and utilized in the workplace to maximize human performance. Implications for information management and organizational communication are investigated and classified. A key aspect is how the two components are impacted by organizational communication. It examines current trends in enterprise-wide technology solutions, specifically as they relate to HRM and OD, implementation of technology, productivity as it relates to use and misuse, and how it facilitates change in human performance and organizational growth.

This course is focused on developing a student’s research skills in preparation for the HRM670 Capstone Thesis Project. Students will be guided through research of peer-reviewed journal articles and research methodologies as they relate to the field of Human Resource Management and Organizational Development. Faculty will guide students through written review of research and current practices in preparation for the HRM670 Capstone Thesis Project.

Prerequisite :  HRM 669 and Must complete at least 7 core courses.

The project course consists of a Master’s Thesis Project in the area of HRM or ODV. Students work under the guidance of an assigned faculty member. Students clarify research topics and identify data sources in preparation for the project. Students gather data and present their research in both written and oral form to faculty and classmates. This course lasts two months and encompasses integrating critical components and learning experience into a deliverable that meets academic guidelines for program completion and may be applicable to the workplace to build a student’s portfolio. Grading is H, S, or U only. Course is eligible for an In Progress (IP) grade.

Specialization in Organizational Leadership

Specialization Requirements:

  • 4 courses; 18 quarter units

The formation and development of groups through effective leadership is the focus of this course. Team communication styles and roles within teams are examined. Strategies that foster creativity in groups are discussed. The impact of technology on teams and communication styles is evaluated. Students learn experientially about groups and teams and the impact of diverse ethical perspectives by participating in group activities and observing leadership in small groups.

Examination of emerging forms of leadership, influence and power, chaos and collaboration. The course will analyze multiple organizations within the private and public sectors, and will draw upon diverse perspectives, ethical considerations and applied approaches. Participate in experiential approaches to learning leadership skills which may include the classroom as a temporary organization to be examined in real time.

Course topics will focus on the dynamics of change, organizational redesign, and the essential skills necessary for leaders to initiate corporate and organizational transformations. Resistance and acceptance of change initiatives, including the impact of organizational culture will be examined. Students will strengthen their leadership skills and strategies in order to initiate and implement change through problem-solving experiences across a broad range of organizational contexts.

Integration of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to design, conduct, and evaluate effective conflict resolution and negotiation practices. Course topics include interpersonal and intra-group conflict resolution; persuasion, problem solving techniques and decision-making in conflict resolution; overcoming bias, anger, and retaliation. Students will develop leadership and dialogue skills used to navigate conflict situations, and begin to detect conflicts as potential clues of organizational challenges.

Degree and Course Requirements

To earn an MA in HR degree, students must complete at least 49.5 quarter units of graduate work. A total of 13.5 quarter units of graduate credits may be granted for equivalent graduate work completed at another institution, as it applies to this degree, and provided the units were not used in earning another advanced degree. Students should take the capstone project class as their last class in the sequence of the program.

MSc Human Resource Management (HRM)

Our CIPD accredited HRM degree will equip you with cutting-edge HR knowledge and skills relevant to the current and future workplace. Our programme will position you as an HR professional with specialist expertise in delivering sustainable HR practices.

Our MSc HRM Masters provides unique insights into this new area of Human Resource Management. HRM benefits employers and employees, as well as creating wider social benefits including lower unemployment, inclusion for marginalised people, reduced demand for out-of-work and in-work benefits while reducing healthcare burdens due to work-related illness and disability. We recognise the rapidly changing trends in employment and offer an exciting selection of specialist courses to educate current and future HR practitioners in a more sustainable and socially responsible form of managing people.

There are eight taught courses (divided equally over two semesters) and a HRM dissertation in semester 3, in a topic of your choosing. If you chose to study Part-time, you will register for two courses per semester and progress to the dissertation at the end of the second year.

There are four mandatory courses in Semester one: Organisational Behaviour, HR Strategy and Practice, Digital Human Resource Management and the Legal Context of Work. These courses provide insights into the fundamentals of Human Resource Management and develop a deeper understanding of specialist areas within the HR profession.

In semester two you will take a further three mandatory courses, Research Philosophy and Practice, Sustainable HRM and Employment Trends. You will then customise your degree to match your specific interests or career pathway by selecting an optional course from a choice of three: The Psychology of Leadership, People Analytics, or Managing Diversity in Business.

In Semester three the HRM dissertation is the capstone course where you will be supported by our world leading faculty to “deep-dive” into your chosen area of HRM. The dissertation enables you to investigate an HRM topic of your choice, where you will be able to demonstrate your mastery of the subject area by developing new insights from analysis of valuable primary research.

Specialist Mandatory Courses:

Hr strategy and practice.

This course explores what it means to be an HR practitioner and provide insights into the differing strategic and operational roles occupied by those working within the HR profession. In line with the CIPD Profession Map, the course also explores the skills and behaviours required to perform the role of an HR practitioner effectively and considers how to design a range of people practices to deliver strategic people plans.

Core to designing HR policies and practices is an understanding of why people behave the way they do at work. This course considers factors at an individual, group and organisational level that impact on our experience of work. Topics covered include motivation, work group dynamics, power and politics, organisational culture and the people aspects of change.

Digital Human Resource Management

Data permeates our world and is integral to the way businesses function and formulate strategies. The contemporary workplace therefore needs to augment human skills with the emergence of artificial intelligence and automation. This course examines how the HR profession can adapt to changing realities by combining artificial and human intelligence in new ways; finding digital solutions that not only enhance efficiency but also sustain positive employee experiences.

The Legal Context of Work

The legal context of work course aims to provide insights into the aspects of international and domestic law relevant to areas of work and employment, equipping you with the skills necessary to develop and maintain legally compliant and sustainable HRM practices.

Sustainable HRM builds on many of the ideas in the HR Practitioner but engages in a more specialized discussion around how to ensure long-term financial sustainability, whilst meeting broader individual, societal and environmental needs. Specifically, the course helps to understand how HRM can be used to develop inclusive workplaces that promote wellbeing, achieve organisational flexibility which is mutually beneficial for employers and employees, and facilitate environmental sustainability in organisations.

This course will encourage you to consider and discuss the context of contemporary employment, and its impacts on the pattern of employment outcome, as well as considering future trends in employment such as robotics. The course will provide the local, national and international context and trends that inform the practice of HR practitioners, and influence the outcomes for employees and workers.  

An MSc with industry demand

Within the HR profession, there is growing interest in understanding how to manage people in a way that not only delivers business results, but provides a positive experience of work for employees and workers, and supports wider social and environmental objectives. Our MSc HRM covers all the topics you would expect from an HR degree but also enables our students to develop specialist knowledge in this increasingly important new approach to people management.

Our research: a driving force for new knowledge

Underpinning our MSc HRM is our close links with the Centre for Research in Employment, Work and the Professions (CREWS) . We have a strong research interest in sustainable HRM, diversity and inclusion, and developing fair work and healthy workplaces. Key academics from CREWS teach on the HRM programme, and use their own research to inform their courses.

HRM Mandatory Courses

Research philosophy and practice.

The Research Philosophy and Practice course aims to prepare students for conducting their own dissertation. It introduces the social science research process, explores different research philosophies, designs and methodologies, and helps students design their own research study.

HRM Course Options

The Psychology of Leadership discusses core theories of leadership, with particular focus on key social psychological approaches to understanding this complex and contentious concept. The practical considerations of leading in an organisational setting are also considered.

This course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and competencies when gathering and using data to deliver value to businesses. This course also creates awareness on the value of people and data by cementing a critical understanding of analytics and its use in creating insight and measuring value.

Developing diverse, inclusive workplaces is key to sustainable HRM and this course provides a critical understanding of the major areas of equality and diversity in organisations and society. By the end of the course, students will understand how diversity affects organisational effectiveness and how to promote greater inclusivity within organisations.

Dissertation Project

Over the summer the masters' dissertation enables you to deepen your knowledge of HRM through research into a topic of your choice. You will gather and analyse data from employers (this could be your current workplace) or employers which directly relates to your ambitions and interests.

A good Honours degree (first or second class), or its non-UK equivalent, in a related subject.

The minimum English language requirement for entry to this programme is  IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) with no component lower than 6.0.

Applicants will normally hold an undergraduate degree in any subject with a minimum pass of 2:2, or equivalent overseas qualification, or an equivalent professional qualification.

The learning and teaching methods on this programme embrace a broad range of approaches that have demonstrated effectiveness in postgraduate marketing education. These include both formal and informal inputs. Traditional lectures will outline the models, theoretical frameworks for the different areas of marketing, with a cutting-edge focus on strategic alternatives and considerations. Tutorial discussion and other interactive activities such as seminars, workshops, and case study analysis encourage students to examine further the core elements of marketing in a critically analytical manner. Other approaches might include videos, guest lectures, collaborative group work, such as presentations and projects, and individual presentations, simulations and computer modelling and the Dissertation or Marketing Consultancy Project.

Assessment strategy is based on testing a wide range of skills required for digital marketing management practice. Support is provided through feedback on initial work and general guidance. Examples include reports, infographics with tables and diagrams, presentations and coursework. Students are encouraged to showcase their work on LinkedIn because the work ties in directly to employability.

Teaching contact hours

This is a full-time course and in total you should be prepared to devote approximately 2 hours of lectures, 6 hours of workshop and 2 hours of asynchronous activity each week.

Hugh Aston Building

You will have access to our purpose-built Hugh Aston Building, equipped with lecture theatres and classrooms, break-out spaces for group work, quiet study zones for individual work and IT labs. Wherever possible, students will be given home access to specialist software.

You’ll also have access to the building’s new £5.5 million extension called The Yard, which provides more than 22,000 square metres of extra space. This is designed to facilitate your learning experience with large and airy breakout spaces, a new Student Advice Centre, and a balcony on the top floor. The Yard also features more comfortable classrooms and self-study spaces, allowing you to carry out independent study as well as group work.

Library services

On campus, the main Kimberlin Library offers a space where you can work, study and access a vast range of print materials, with computer stations, laptops, plasma screens and assistive technology also available. 

As well as providing a physical space in which to work, we offer online tools to support your studies, and our extensive online collection of resources accessible from our  Library website , e-books, specialised databases and electronic journals and films which can be remotely accessed from anywhere you choose. 

We will support you to confidently use a huge range of learning technologies, including Learning Zone, Collaborate Ultra, DMU Replay, MS Teams, Turnitin and more. Alongside this, you can access LinkedIn Learning and learn how to use Microsoft 365, and study support software such as mind mapping and note-taking through our new Digital Student Skills Hub. 

The library staff offer additional support to students, including help with academic writing, research strategies, literature searching, reference management and assistive technology. There is also a ‘Just Ask’ service for help and advice, live  LibChat , online workshops, tutorials and drop-ins available from our  Learning Services , and weekly library live chat sessions that give you the chance to ask the library teams for help.

There are 1,600 study places across all library locations, more than 700 computer stations, laptops to borrow, free wi-fi and desktop power outlets.
