The Doctoral Programme of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was started in 1971. It is a full-time doctoral programme that offers students opportunities for advanced studies and research in different specializations related to Management Science. The Programme aims to prepare students for careers in teaching and research in management studies and in related disciplines, and for careers in the government, in industry, and in other organizations that require advanced analytical and research capabilities.

The Doctoral Programme has two streams :

The Doctoral Programme in Management includes the following - specializations: Economics, Finance & Control, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management, Organizational Behaviour, Public Policy and Management, and Strategic Management.

The Doctoral Programme in Disciplines Related to Management includes the following specializations: Operations Research & Systems Analysis, Regional Development, and Sociology.

On successful completion of the Programme, a student is awarded the Ph.D degree, in his/her area of specialization.

Department of Ph.D

Amongst the colleges providing Ph.D admission in Kolkata, UEM has the most experienced faculty members who are some of the super-brilliant research experts in their field. No doubt it is the best option for a Ph.D in Kolkata. Ph.D. program at the University of Engineering & Management is offered in two modes- Full time and Part time (not distance learning). Courseworks on Research Methodology and Computer Applications are mandatory. Other credits on coursework are choice based.

A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and should not be employed in any other organization or should not be a student in any other course anywhere, and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official/employment obligations anywhere.

Ph.D. program is for minimum 3 years. UEM encourages co-guide from other organizations but there must be an internal guide, and the internal guide must be the main guide.

Dr. Samrat Roy Ph.D. Programme Co-ordinator

September 2015 was a landmark in the history of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. The college was granted permission by the University of Calcutta to independently initiate a Ph.D. program in the departments of Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce. This makes St. Xavier’s one of a very select few colleges in the country to be allowed this privilege. It is a recognition by both the University of Calcutta and the University Grants Commission that St. Xavier’s has the merit, quality and academic pedigree to undertake and supervise research.

Prior to this, teachers of these departments were registered as doctoral supervisors under the University of Calcutta. As supervisors working under University rules, they could guide or act as co-guides to Ph.D. students registered under the University of Calcutta. The permission to run an independent Ph.D. program in St. Xavier’s College is significant in that it empowers the faculty of the four Departments to supervise Ph.D. work of research scholars registered with the College, following the Ph.D. regulations of St. Xavier’s College formulated according to the University Grants Commission and approved by the Senate of the University of Calcutta.

The Ph.D. program has been running successfully since the time of its inception with Fr. Principal as Head of the Ph.D. Committee.

The induction of fresh Ph.D. scholars happens once a year in the month of July. The process involves a successful completion of the Research Entrance Examination (RET) and a rigorous interview. The scholars have to register under St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), after completing the Ph.D. Course Work conducted by the College. The final Ph.D. degree is conferred by St. Xavier’s College and University of Calcutta. The motto of the College is Nihil Ultra- Nothing Beyond. Fr. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, has taken that motto seriously. His mission is to expand the college by opening new PG courses in both the Arts and Science streams and finally, Ph.D. programs in these courses. With his vision, inspiration and determination, the College marches ahead to turn his dreams into a reality.

The subjects offered are Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Commerce respectively.

The total scholars currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program since 2016 till date is 69.

The Registered scholars across departments is 36.

The Ph.D curriculum includes course work classes for its first batch of scholars towards the end of the year followed by course work examination before winter vacations.

“Scholar’s Day” the annual event of the PhD program is held every year since it’s inception in 2018. The PhD department looks forward to extend its wings to other post graduate disciplines of this college which will open new avenues of research in their respective disciplines.

Admissions 2019

In the year, 2019, 65 candidates applied for Ph.D programs in Commerce, Physics, Micro biology and Biotechnology respectively. The non Net candidates are required to qualify Research Aptitude Test (RET) as per UGC norms. The total number of RET eligible candidates were 19. Out of 19 candidates who appeared for RET, 11 candidates were successful.

The total number of RET exempted candidates were 44.

All the 44 candidates appeared for interview. The total number of candidates selected in the Ph.D. Interview is 20

AmbujaNeotia Group, with a strong sense of social commitment, extends its capabilities towards the development of education. The Neotia family started its journey in education with Neotia Institute of Technology Management and Science (NITMAS), previously known as Institute of Technology and Marine Engineering (ITME), a college established in 2002, affiliated to the then West Bengal University of Technology, which is now known as Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT). The Neotia University (TNU) was established vide the West Bengal State Government Act XXIII of 2014. Though TNU is relatively new in its present configuration, it has its antecedents in the 17 years old institution.

Admission Procedure

Applications shall be invited through announcements by the University preferably twice in a year at the time of semester begins. The interested applicant/s may submit the application for the admission in Ph.D. programme to the Registrar Office of the University. The concerned application shall be sent to the Research and Development (R&D) committee from the Registrar Office. R&D committee shall get in touch with the Controller of Examination section to conduct the admission entrance test (written mode). In the entrance test, the 50% question shall be set from the research methodology and the other 50% question shall be set from the concerned subject/s. The applicants scoring ≥ 55% marks in the admission entrance test shall be called for interview. The R&D committee shall constitute the panel of experts in order to conduct the interview. On the basis of the performance of the candidate in the interview, the candidate may be considered for the enrollment in the Ph.D program of the university.

Expert Committees

At the end of every six months, candidate’s research progress shall be evaluated by the research advisory committee (RAC)created for each scholar. RAC shall suggest ways to improve the quality of research work of the scholar. RAC shall be made by considering five faculty members in which one expert must be from outside of TNU. The report of RAC shall be submitted to the R&D committee. The R&D committee shall keep the records and further shall forward the same to COE.

In view of the prevailing situation relating to COVID 19, IISER-Kolkata hereby announces the POSTPONEMENT of the interview for the PhD admission for the Autumn 2020 session in Earth Sciences (DES), the Centre for Advanced Functional Materials (CAFM) and the Center of Excellence in Space Sciences India (CESSI) which were scheduled to happen on 19/20 March 2020.

There would not be any interview on 19/20 March 2020. Entry to the campus will also be restricted.

Integrated PhD Programme

Integrated Doctor of Philosophy (IP) programme at IISER Kolkata is a combination programme which starts with a comprehensive Masters programme (MS) followed by a research programme (PhD).  Individual Department selects deserving candidates from the pool of applicants based on their academic backgrounds and their performance in the selection test.

Eligibility:    B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.B.B.S. or an equivalent degree

Bose Institute, Kolkata; an Autonomous Institute of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India; dedicated to research in Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences, has invited applications for full-time Ph.D. programme in various research disciplines being pursued at the Institute.

Areas of research include Chemical Sciences, Biological Sciences & Physical Sciences.

Eligibility: (i) Applicant should have Master's degree or equivalent in any of the following fields: Engineering/ Science/ Technology/Medical, with at least 55% of marks (50% marks for SC/ST/OBC (NCL)/ Differently-Abled Person and other categories of candidates, as per UGC norms).

(ii) Applicant should have an award of Junior Research Fellowship (CSIR-UGC JRF/ DBTJRF/ICMR-JRF / DST- INSPIRE / DBT-BINC or equivalent). The last date of validity of Fellowship should not be earlier than 31st December, 2024. Those in final year of their Master's degree programme and are in possession of an award of a JRF, if selected, will have to submit their final mark sheet/ degree certificate at the time of joining.

DST-INSPIRE fellows will be admitted provisionally. Confirmation of their admission to the Ph.D. programme is subject to the final award of the INSPIRE fellowship by DST. If the candidate is finally not awarded the INSPIRE fellowship by DST, his/her provisional admission is liable to be cancelled by the Institute. Candidates possessing a DST INSPIRE Fellowship must also have qualified in an appropriate national level eligibility examination like CSIR-UGC NETLS/GATE or equivalent, at the time of application.

Those who have qualified in GATE / JEST / JGEEBILS / NET (LS) etc., and have a valid award of JRF mentioned or equivalent, are also eligible to apply.

Those awarded ICAR Fellowship will be eligible if the applicant has a valid award letter for one of the other fellowships mentioned in eligibility criteria.

Age limit: Applicant should be below 30 years. Relaxation of age is applicable as per Government of India rules.

Eligibility criteria including upper age limit will be reckoned as on 29.09.2024, the last date for submission of application.

Selection: Selection to the Ph.D Program at the institute will be based on Interviews to be held tentatively during last week of October 2024.

Total number of vacancies: 49 (UR-22, OBC-12, SC-8, ST-3, EWS-4). Fellowship will be admissible as per Govt. of India rules as provided by UGC / CSIR / DBT/DST/ICMR etc.

Application: Application can be submitted online at the link provided in the detailed Notification at http://jcbose.ac.in/phd latest by 23:59 hrs. on 29.09.2024.

An acknowledgement receipt will be generated following the successful submission of the online application form. Applicants should retain this receipt for future reference. If called for the interview, candidates must produce this acknowledgement receipt. No candidate will be allowed to appear for the interview without this receipt.

Names of the shortlisted candidates, along with the date and time of the interview will be displayed on the Institute’s website. Shortlisted candidates will be intimated the interview date only via email. The candidate needs to appear in-person for the interview. The selection process will assess the candidate’s knowledge in core areas as well as the suitability of the candidate for conducting scientific research.

Candidates should come prepared to spend enough time at the Institute during the interview process. They are encouraged to visit various laboratories and interact with faculty members. Further, candidates need to submit an option form stating their relative preference, mentioning laboratories of their choice, after the interaction sessions and lab visits.

  • The college campus is kept very clean and tidy
  • The administration faculty of the college is very poor
  • The food of the college canteen is very bad. The behavior of the canteen workers is very bad

I want to say about the question that B.arch course is taught very well in our college. Every professor of the course teaches very well. Depertent on every subject related to the course are very good.Theirs studio room is very good and every professors teaching skills are very good.They Gave their best .I also talk about semester exam.When exam happened they should be maintained the time .

My Point of View on OmDayal

I love to do coding so why I choose CSE. There is too many faculties for each subjects. They are too much friendly and they teach more than our syllabus, they share their own experience with us, they all are very experienced and well qualified teachers. There is 5-6 months per a semester. You have to do very hard work for pass and faculties are always there to help you.

I am very greatful and also very lucky for being a part of this institution.

As I am interested in design-related works, so I chose this course. The course curriculum is quite good and as a student, I must say the course curriculum helps me to gather knowledge in the easiest way. The faculty members of the mechanical department are experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields. And the members are very helpful also.

I have chosen this course as I have passed a Diploma in Mechanical Engg. There are Faculty: Student ratio is 1:20 in this college. Regarding qualification of the faculties, all of them are Master Degree holder and most of they are pursuing PhD and their teaching method is technically sound, syllabus oriented and illustrated. They conduct exams accordingly to the guidelines of MAKAUT. As I attend the classes sincerely and our teachers explain every topic minutely, I seem it will be easy for me to score very well in the exam.

In our department, there are 64 students and faculty 10, Hence the faculty: Student Ratio is 1:19. All faculty members either MTech/Ph.D. with good industrial experience, their teaching methods are appealing and convenient to understand. some faculty members can synchronize their wavelength with the wave of students attending their online class. In the current situation where covid-19 has created great challenges in our daily life, the college provides an emerging online platform, Microsoft Teams. classroom to conduct online/virtual classroom with audio & Video graphic presentations. Also, the college provides adequate notes on all subjects and topics with this platform. Passing the exams was not very difficult because of the better understanding of concepts due to the excellent teaching methods provided by the faculty members.

Course Curriculum overview: Civil Engineering course focuses on everything, academic growth, personality development, soft skills etc. The faculty, the labs infrastructure, the teaching faculty is very good. All laboratory rooms are proper maintaining. Batch wise laboratory experiments were carried out without missing any students. Everyday there is a class in proper routine maintained and no classes is closed. Faculty: Faculty members are very punctual, disciplined. They are extremely qualified and too good in handling the students into quality persons. All the members of the teaching staff and Lab assistant are very co-operative and helpful. Audio-visual rooms help students to interact with teacher and particular topics teachers take interest in giving good PPT lectures. We learn something new from them everyday.

Good for Education but not for campusing

As I was a diploma holder so i have some knowledge on different subjects of my syllabus but i had see that I have to know more after seeing our renowned professors. They always help us to catch the main fundamental of any technical knowledge. After discussing any topic professors give us field experience how it will be faced in professional working time. Faculty student ratio was 1:25 for why we closely contact with professors. They took weekly assessment test to check our preparation level. It was not more difficult but have to read thoroughly otherwise you can't got pass marks.

A Good Environment For Learning

Reason for choosing Civil was that it involved infrastructural designing. Faculties are helpful and they do provide a lot of guidance. Semester exams are conducted regularly with multiple assignments and tutorials.

ODCA for Kolkata

Architecture is a wonderful subject. We are taught about almost every field possible- from sociology to engineering mechanics, acoustics to economics. A wide range of subjects are covered. Faculty have at least passed M.Arch and few of them have completed their PhD. Usage smartboards, presentations, practical work is done. Term exams held every six months and every month one internal assessment is held. On top of that there are assignments on a daily basis.
