How is sentence stress in German different than in English?

Content words (i.e. verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs) are stressed in both German and English as opposed to function words (prepositions, pronouns, articles..). However, in English (at least in American accent) in neutral speech, content words aren't equally stressed, but some words are more pronounced than the others.

Examples (words in bold are more pronouncedly stressed):

A nice car - ein schönes Auto A really nice car - ein wirklich schönes Auto Bob Smith - Bob Smith Bob's brother - Bobs Bruder Zinc oxide - Zinkoxid New York - New York History of Africa - Geschichte von Afrika The white house (its color is white)- Das weiße Haus The White house (of the American president)- Das Weiße Haus

Does German have a tendency to stress some content words more than the others? Does it follow the English pattern? Is it in German more of equally stressed content words?

Note: I fully understand that we can stress ANY word in a sentence contrastively to emphasize it. I also understand that German tends to stress more the last lexical word in a phrase. However, my question is not about these situations, it's not about stressing content words contrastively or when they occur as the last lexical word.

I disagree with most items in Jankas list. You don't stress words, you stress syllables. I think more correct are:

ein schön es Au to ein schön es rot es Au to ein wirk lich schön es rot es Au to Bob Smith Bobs Bru der Bob und Cy ril Smith Zink oxid Ab deck- und Zink oxid sal be New York San Fran cis co Bad Harz burg Ge schich te A frikas Das wei ße Haus Das Wei ße Haus

If you have more than one stressed syllable in one sentence of phrase, it strongly depends on the context, which of those syllables gets the most stress.

In the 3rd example (ein wirklich schönes rotes Auto) in most situations you would give the biggest stress to wirk in wirklich , but there might be situations where you want to stress another word.

I never heard any difference between any house with a white facade and the US-presidents home. Because its part of a proper name, you just capitalize »Weiße« in case of the presidents home, while you leave it lower case if it is just any house, but you do not pronounce or stress it differently.

As I already tried to explain: This strongly depends on the context. I give you two examples:

A: Warum musst du deine alte Rostlaube direkt vor meinem Hauseingang abstellen? Wie sieht das denn aus? Kannst du deine schäbige Karre nicht schräg gegenüber, vor dieser baufälligen Hütte abstellen? Dort würde sie besser hinpassen als vor meine Villa. B: Jetzt pass einmal auf, mein Freund. Mein Auto ist weder eine alte Rostlaube noch eine schäbige Karre. Ich gebe zu, es ist nicht mehr ganz neu, aber ich finde, es ist ein schönes Auto. Es hat eben Charakter, ganz im Gegensatz zu dir.

Here A says to B that B's car is rusty, old and shabby, but B is defending this car. B wants to highlight, that the car is beautiful, and therefore the word »schönes« is much more stressed than every other word in B's speech.

C: Na, Fräulein Tochter, du wirst ja bald 18. Was wünscht du dir denn zum Geburtstag? Möchtest du eine schöne Handtasche, oder vielleicht ein schönes Kleid? D: Ganz ehrlich? Ich will lieber ein schönes Auto. Es muss auch gar nicht teuer sein.

Here one of the parents asks a young lady what she wants for her 18 th birthday. A beautiful handbag? Or a beautiful dress? In her answer the daughter wants to put the focus on the fact, that it better should be a car, and so here the word Auto is stressed more than anything else in the whole speech.

This applies for the rest of all examples.

  • An ordinary simple man who doesn't know what AIDS stands for, opens his dictionary and starts reading: "Aids bezeichnet eine spezifische Kombination von Symptomen, die beim Menschen infolge der durch Infektion mit dem Humanen Immun defizienz-Virus (HI-Virus, HIV) induzierten Zerstörung des Immunsystems auftreten." This man doesn’t want to stress any word contrastively to make a special point or to draw attention or emphasis to it. He doesn't want to know or even care about specific details.   • @Abdullah: Another simple man might read the same sentence with other stress-points: » Aids bezeichnet eine spezifische Kombination von Symptomen , die beim Menschen infolge der durch Infektion mit dem Humanen Immun defizienz-Virus ( HI-Virus, HIV ) induzierten Zerstörung des Immunsystems auftreten.« And a thrid person might set his/her focuses even to other words. It really depends very strong on the context. The stress power is not equal. The natural stress is on the most "topical" part of an item. English is similar but there is sometimes a dispute which part of an item is the topic:

  • Yes, the determiner that conveys new or most specific information. For either Geschichte Afrikas and Geschichte von Afrika , the "natural" stress would be on Geschichte , because that's the natural topic. Stress can be defined as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. Stress is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. Everyone experiences stress to some degree. The way we respond to stress, however, makes a big difference to our overall well-being.

Stress affects both the mind and the body. A little bit of stress is good and can help us perform daily activities. Too much stress can cause physical and mental health problems. Learning how to cope with stress can help us feel less overwhelmed and support our mental and physical well-being.

Stress makes it hard for us to relax and can come with a range of emotions, including anxiety and irritability. When stressed, we may find it difficult to concentrate. We may experience headaches or other body pains, an upset stomach or trouble sleeping. We may find we lose our appetite or eat more than usual. Chronic stress can worsen pre-existing health problems and may increase our use of alcohol, tobacco and other substances.

Stressful situations can also cause or exacerbate mental health conditions, most commonly anxiety and depression, which require access to health care. When we suffer from a mental health condition, it may be because our symptoms of stress have become persistent and have started affecting our daily functioning, including at work or school.

No, everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. Coping styles and symptoms of stress vary from person to person. ​​

Yes, it is natural to feel stressed in challenging situations such as job interviews, school exams, unrealistic workloads, an insecure job, or conflict with family, friends or colleagues. For many people stress reduces over time as the situation improves or as they learn to cope emotionally with the situation. Stress tends to be widespread during events such as major economic crises, disease outbreaks, natural disasters, war, and community violence. 

Most of us manage stress well and continue to function. If we have difficulties coping with stress, we should seek help from a trusted health-care provider or from another trusted person in our community.

Learn stress management

WHO’s stress management guide – Doing what matters in times of stress – aims to equip people with practical skills to cope with stress. A few minutes each day are enough to practise the guide’s self-help techniques. The guide can be used alone or with its accompanying audio exercises.

Keep a daily routine

Having a daily schedule can help us use our time efficiently and feel more in control. Set time for regular meals, time with family members, exercise, daily chores and other recreational activities. 

Get plenty of sleep

Getting enough sleep is important for both body and mind. Sleep repairs, relaxes and rejuvenates our body and can help reverse the effect of stress.

Good sleep habits (also known as sleep hygiene) include:

  • Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends.
  • If possible, make your sleeping area quiet, dark, relaxing and at a comfortable temperature.
  • Limit your use of electronic devices, such as TVs, computers and smart phones, before sleeping.
  • Avoid large meals, caffeine and alcohol before bedtime.
  • Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.

Connect with others  ​

Keep in touch with family and friends and share your concerns and feelings with people you trust. Connecting with others can lift our mood and help us feel less stressed.

Eat healthy​

What we eat and drink can affect our health. Try to eat a balanced diet and to eat at regular intervals. Drink enough fluids. Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables if you can.

Exercise regularly ​

Regular daily exercise can help to reduce stress. This can include walking, as well as more intensive exercise.

Limit time following news ​

Spending too much time following news on television and social media can increase stress. Limit the time you spend following the news if it increases your stress.

  • Abstract / Description The ESI, adapted from the Everyday Stressors Index (ESI) of Hall (1983) into German, serves to assess everyday problems and stress, especially for young mothers with a low socioeconomic status. Everyday stressors are considered good indicators of adjustment difficulties and are attributed a higher prediction of psychological symptoms than stressful life events. The asked for stressors are financial and interpersonal problems, role stress, job problems and parental worries (k = 19). IELTS Stress Essay

This is a model IELTS stress essay. It is about stress in modern society and how to prevent it.

It is a causes and solutions type essay. In other words, you have to identify what causes stressand then suggest solutions.

Stress is now a major problem in many countries around the world.

What are some of the factors in modern society that cause this stress and how can we reduce it?

This type of essay lends itself to two body paragraphs - one explaining the causes and the next discussing some possible solutions.

As is important with any IELTS essay, you must always read the question carefully.

The topic is often narrowed down to a particular group of people or topic.

Narrowing Down the Topic

Stress in Modern Life Essay

The key here is that ' modern society ' is mentioned.

If you just talk about stress in general but don't connect it to modern society you may be in danger of not fully answering the question .

You need to brainstorm some issues specific to the world we live in today that may result in stress.

What things effect us today that did not (or not too such an extent) 10, 20, 30 years ago?

Using Personal Pronouns

Also, you may notice that ' we ' is used a lot in the stress essay.

Remember an IELTS essay is not quite the same as an academic essay you will normally write. It is can be more personal as you only have your own experience to support your answer with.

You should avoid too many personal pronouns if possible such as ' I ' throughout the essay but you may wish to use this to give your opinion or examples from your own experience at times. This is ok, but don't overdo it.

This question specifically says how can ' we ' reduce it. So it is already making it personal. So it is ok to write about what all of us, or ' we ', can do.

Model Stress Essay

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

What are some of the factors in modern society that cause this stress, and how can we reduce it?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Stress Essay Model Answer

Stress is a problem that can have detrimental effects on many people’s lives, and there are various factors in modern society responsible for this. However, there are ways to limit the potential impacts.

The modern world we live in today presents us with many issues that we did not have to cope with in the past. Firstly, there are issues of terrorism that we are constantly confronted with in the media. Whether these are real or not, we are led to believe our lives are in constant danger, be it flying on a plane or travelling on public transport. Climate change is another worry that everyone has to face. The results of a significant rise in temperatures could radically affect our ways of life, and our children’s too. There are also more health issues to be concerned about than in the past, with rises in alzheimer’s, diabetes, and stroke to name but a few. All of these concerns can result in stress.

Tackling such problems will not be easy, but there are measures that can be taken. Governments and the media could play their part by ensuring that instead of persistently bombarding us with such negative images and information about the world in which we live, we are given more positive stories too. However, given this is unlikely to happen, we need to develop our own strategies to distract us from these influences. Of course exercising regularly is one thing we should do as this has been shown to increase endorphin levels and lead to feelings of happiness. Sleeping enough helps us to recuperate and restore our body. Finally, eating properly can improve our health and result in less worry about potential diseases.

All in all, although there are many factors around us today which lead to stress, we can take steps to reduce it. Given that the strains we face in modern society will likely get worse, ignoring it is not an option for many people.

Stress: Definition and Different Types of Stress Essay

Stress can be defined as any cognitive, emotional, or physical pressure that when built, affects an individual directly or indirectly by influencing his work, work-related, or personal life. At work, stress affects an individual’s performance, either negatively or positively. Negative, when stress provokes depressive or pessimistic stress patterns, whereas positive when stress enables an individual to face and accept challenges. There are various stressors responsible for inducing stress patterns in work and relationships environments. Environmental stressors such as noise, heat, speech, aircraft noise, traffic noise, office noise, etc. The three main types of stress, present in any environment are physical, emotional, and cognitive (psychological). Any of these stresses incur as a result of work overload, repetitive tasks that underestimate individual’s capability, and job mismatch. Problems of work overload are directly or indirectly associated with psychological or physical pressure. For instance, individuals who find themselves in jobs that are ill-suited to their skills, abilities, and training or that do not meet their needs and expectations are likely to experience stress.

Stress impacts human performance, either individually or in teams and depicts a unique relationship between the person and the environment that is judged by the person for his own well-being. This clearly indicates that at work, not all stress is negative. It is stress in teamwork that induces the motivation factor to accept all the challenges that in the longer run evaluates and appraises the individual. At work there are two types of stressors that influence individuals. Ambient or indirect stressors, that is associated as major factors to be a part of the environment or background where the individual works. Direct stressors or performance-related stressors are directly linked to task performance. Performance-related stressors can be minimized by successful task performance. Stress is positive when it is perceived by an individual, for achieving his goals. However, there are certain variables of stress, which are proposed to have a direct impact on the team’s interaction and coordination. Such teamwork stressors that trigger motivation and promote a sense of coordination among teams include workload, team size, team management, and timeliness to accomplish a task.

Stress when relating to performance has remained a critical issue for there are controversies between positive and negative influences of stress. Many believe that individual or team performance is susceptible to the effects of stress as there is a requirement for teams to maintain acceptable performance. This is done by interacting effectively with fellow team members, which also pressurizes the stressed member to maintain his or her own performance. Another critical issue about work stress is its influence on family members, which is usually negative.

Work-family conflict gives rise to a high magnitude of stress transmission, which emotionally affects family members. It would be better to say that work-related stress when remaining unmanaged, induce stress among family members and relationships in a pessimistic manner. Here comes stress in emotion management that works among various relations including family and friends.

Stress in education has enabled us to think towards stress-management training, which has provided us with a useful function to help individuals to recognize the symptoms of stress and to overcome any negativity related to the stress. There are various awareness activities and skills-training programs designed to cope up with stress-related issues. Such techniques have proven useful in helping individuals deal with stressors and accept realities inherent in the work environment.
